covers chapter 7 from the book not in our genes.
1-“This chapter discussed how society generally assumes that all mentally health issues and things like schizophrenia or ADHD are biologically determined, and there is a tendency to simply prescribe some sort of treatment or medication to help these people become “normal”. I found it interesting how the biological determinist point of view claims that these differences are simply biological, yet they paradoxically try and change them through medical intervention. The portions of the chapter that talked about ADHD were also interesting, because they discussed how relatively ineffective ADHD medication really is, and how the mere idea of medicating people with ADHD is really just victim blaming and is done largely to benefit teachers in classrooms. I also thought it was interesting when the chapter discussed how we view ADHD as a problem only in classroom settings. This is something I had never really thought about, but looking back, I have only really seen ADHD discussed in terms of disruptions in school”.
2-” Personally I have not been afflicted by ADHD, which this chapter puts a lot of focus on, but I have dealt with mental issues like depression. I think in modern society our attention spans have shortened due to the constant flow of information we are always receiving from the world around us. It’s sad that we chose to just medicate people that struggle to pay attention especially children instead of trying to change our understanding of what they need. Similar to how in the past patients would be given brain surgery to “fix” them now were medicating people to “fix” them. I won’t deny medicine helps most people but I don’t think it’s the answer for everyone. “
