With the Invention of the Internet and digital media there Is an abundance of the availability of lists and polls. Among these polls are the greatest leaders of all time. Time magazine online takes this concept a step further and lists the top one hundred leaders of all time (Keenan, 1998). What would be the criteria for such a claim? What would make one leader better than another? In every organization criteria will vary among individuals, but this paper will examine the roles and responsibilities of leaders to create and maintain a healthy organizational culture.
Throughout the course of history, influential leaders have inspired others to achieve great things, many times changing the course of history. Successful leaders each have their own style, unique and their own, which leaves a lasting impression on those that they inspire. Leadership is defined as the ability to lead (Leadership, 2006). A leader can also be defined as “one who Influences others to attain goals (Bateman & Scott, 2009, p.
434). ” This is only a broad definition of leadership and cannot describe all traits and responsibilities of leaders and what makes a good leader.
A leader must also possess vision; this vision can be for all aspects of succeeding and encouraging others to succeed. Leaders must also follow-up on this vision to ensure accuracy and deviations. It is important for leaders to identify with the organization and establish the organization as one overall team working together to achieve a common goal. Leaders must also take advantage of opportunities to enhance the organization and make good decisions and continue to make good decisions.
These traits are Important In the development of a leader, but a leader must also have the trench to utilize these traits and empower those within the organization. Leadership also is not dependent on any level within an organization. The traits and characteristics of leaders and good leaders are those which have and will continue to have a positive impact on the organization of where they are part. Leaders can be anyone who possesses leadership traits within an organization regardless of position or time.
Over the years there have been many studies to determine whether leadership traits are similar In good leaders. There have also been studies to determine whether there re no similarities at all and good leaders are each truly independent. The situational approach to leadership focuses on the idea that universally important traits and behaviors do not exist, and that effective leadership behavior varies from situation to situation (Bateman & Scott, 2009, p. 446).
There is also a Situational Leadership Model which tries to further understand the relationship between managers and employees or leaders and followers. The Situational Leadership Model analyzes leaders on task involvement and on the creation of relationships. An employee’s developmental level just also be addressed in order to determine the characteristics of a good leader. There first level includes plenty of motivation, but finds the employee lacks competence.
The second level shows the employee with intermittent competence and confidence. In the third level the employee maintains plenty of competence, but highest level and shows the employee with the confidence competence and the motivation to complete the tasks at hand and to further motivate subordinates. This model can be arguably correct or incorrect as a matter of opinion, but if used erectly can be an ideal model to create a successful team department or individual within any organization.
In my organization there has lack of cohesion between incoming and outgoing supervision I believe the best way to display leadership to always try to do your best, and to abide by the same rules managers use to ensure proper professional relationships and work ethic. It is hard at work to always maintain the best appearance for standards with colleagues due to the interaction outside of work (I. E. Friendship). Many times a person must look through the cloud of coercion which is caused by friendship. It is also especially important to shy away from having favorites in the work environment.
Any sign of bias toward another employee based on personal favoritism would be a sure sign of incompetent leadership. By following the rules, an employee would be more apt to continue to follow the rules throughout the remainder of his/her career and career progression. In the end it would also benefit to keep a positive attitude and look to the future as positive as possible to keep negativity out of the workplace. In conclusion, there are those whose abilities and successful leadership traits allow or victories and accomplishments.
