Analysis of the literature
For the decades the project management is found to a discipline that is established. The PMI known as project management institutes body of knowledge is recognized by the professional project management communities in the form of de facto standards of the project management all over the world. During the recent years at the same time, most of the research communities along with the PMI itself is found to carry out the initiatives which have been pushing the boundaries of the body of knowledge (Burke, 2013).
The topics related to many of the contemporary project management, which is emerging were discussed in the academic journals. In this, the activities in relation to the integration of the knowledge from the disciplines of other traditional management are involved, in which project management is perceived from various perspectives like social sciences with of the help of research methods to study the project management from other industries. With the other industries, there is a vertical integration of project management along with the internationalization is involved although there are numerous studies which have explained right from the characteristic topics of the project management and methodological research (Karrbom & Gohary, 2012).
In this literature review, all the topics are covered which have been categorized into trends or themes. It gives the executive summary or the overview of all the related topics in one review without getting into much depth.
From this literature review, there are numerous articles which make an attempt in challenging the project management body of knowledge that is existing. It has been argued by them that the system of knowledge is not at all practical and is not enough in handling the real situations. Some of the articles are attempting to evaluate and think of the effectiveness that is in build in the knowledge system in particular areas. For improving the theory the hybrid, interdisciplinary, and multidisciplinary approaches have been used so that it can be applied to the particular situations.
Some of them are investigating about the areas which have not been addressed by the PMBOK. For applying the project management research, some are using this knowledge in other disciplines. The ontology and the epistemology are being studied by few with respect to the project management body knowledge and the involved research. The following structure gives the details of it (Kerzner, 2013).
Post project assessment- an art and science approach: It gives the description of the system which is used for conducting the assessment of post project and the application of case study on the system is discussed.
Investigation of methodological research methods
Project management in research and development- the project management in the interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary are suggested by this journal.
Boundary action in a construction project- practice of new collaborative projects- Approaches for the new collaborative methods has been developed. In this journal, the knowledge has been added to the projects in the form of practice in which the findings are interpreted from the case study on the collaborative contemporary construction project (Larson & Gray, 2013).
In the construction industry, most of the activities are very well organized in the projects in the form of temporary undertakings in which a huge number of various professions and stakeholders have been included. Hence, for the construction industry, it is found to be the key challenge for integrating the profession and the key stakeholders (Mir & Pinnington, 2014).
Integration of the early process of design to the process of production later in the process of the construction project was also the major challenge- in this, the perspectives from overall has been taken right from the initiation of the particular project till the handling of the building (Phillips, 2013).
In similar to this, for instance, projects that are related to the development of complex products, projects of construction can be conceptualized in the form of the social process as in this the complex product has been developed by the practitioners with the number of the processes and the activities that are interdependent with the help of specialized skills (Pmi, 2017). Apart from the development of new products such kind of projects might be important for bringing the change and the renewal of the trends in the enterprise (Schwalbe, 2015) and the management of such theme projects can be featured as the scale set between the control and innovation (Tandfonline, 2017).
To the major extent, the construction industry is project-based and it has the controversy of poor quality, providing bad services, and the history of the ruined promises (Verzuh, 2015). This kind of issues which are as a result of the lack of trust, no cooperation, communication in an ineffective manner, and the controversial relationship among the stakeholders. These are the perspectives which call for the key changes in the construction industry.
However, even after addressing the similar type of problems in all the areas only very few of the other research fields were found to have the impact significantly on the discipline and the practices of the project management. Hence the following are some of the gaps in the project management and the body of knowledge that is accumulated in the various other fields including the construction industry.
Identification of the themes, trends, and perspectives and/or controversies in construction project
There are no specific theories under which the discipline is underlined in promoting the perspectives of the project, which is the most significant thing in achieving the goals of the business. Further, in the construction industry and in other fields there are no methods which are commonly accepted and no set frameworks in evaluating the success of the project from the viewpoint of the stakeholders in the organization.
The cooperation from the scholars in diversified fields is required for positioning the project management as the strategic asset of the organization in order to address the issues that are in association with the project alignment and the factors that are affecting the project management.
The advantages of becoming a practitioner in the project management of the construction project suggest that learning will be helpful in creating the skillful practitioner who will have the capabilities of performing well in the organization (Schwalbe, 2015). In the journal of Voronov (2008), the concept of project management has been applied in the construction project.
With the help of strategic management and the theory of project based learning have given the better understanding of the political and the informal forms of action while creating the strategy (Mir & Pinnington, 2014). From the experimental investigation, it has been identified that some of the processes in the construction project is delegitimized. With the application of the organizational learning from the practical perspective, it has been identified that in the construction projects the politics might affect the learning which may help in shaping the identity process (Larson & Gray, 2013).
It has been stated that the research on construction project has focused mainly on the structural characteristics (Burke, 2013) and in one of the instances in the line of the research it has been noticed most of the issues were in the need of clear roles and responsibilities in managing the project so as to make sure of the efficiency in the projects being handled. However, in the study the findings that have been reported are indicating in a contradictory manner which says that the roles and responsibilities should be flexible.
During the process of the project, the roles and responsibilities can be changed as it is quite important and is the requirement for making sure of the communication and cooperation to be improved (Karrbom & Gohary, 2012). Hence, the changing aspects of the roles and responsibilities are found to be the instances of the knowledge area in which there is a need for additional research, particularly from the perspective of projects as the practice which is in relation to the collaborative approaches of the project.
Conclusion
In this literature review, it has been shown that the case study is an example of the collaborative construction project in which the practitioners have changed the conventional practices of the project by their boundary actions. Apart from this the cooperation that is required have been improved along with the communication (Dainty et al., 2006; Wikforss and Lo¨fgren, 2007) which states that there is no requirement of the social arenas, collaborative meetings in which the renewal, change, and innovation can actually take place (Westling, 2002). In the conclusion, it states that if there are changes in the communication, then it can have the key impact on the practices of the construction projects and improvements in the issues which are contributing to the key effects of the performance of the project.
