Lost in La Mancha is a documentary of the director Terry Gilliam while filming a classic movie of Don Quixote story. The documentary is recording what is going on behind the scenes. The fight they faced, the danger they have and how they achieve some challenges. Terry Gilliam is trying to make the movie for over a decade. In 2018, the story of Don Quixote ‘The man who killed Don Quixote’ came in the cinema. We apply these concepts of project management class, explaining the project selection, coverage, communication, budget, scheduling, WBS / ROM, stakeholder’s management, risk and explaining the project closely.
Moreover what errors have been emerged in documentary and how this should be corrected?
Selection criteria of project:
It is the process of evaluation of each function of the project and function with high priority should be selected. Location section is an example of project selection. This is one of the key decisions to make a film. As we saw at the beginning of the movie, they choose to film in Europe instead of filming in Hollywood, which makes Gilliam travel from the United States to Spain to Madrid and works with people who speak another language.
This conclusion forces made Gilliam to learn Spanish or to find a translator.
Project scope:
Moving to scope, There are many tasks to complete the film. Starting from choosing location till filming the last scene. Not all the tasks were filmed, we did not have enough information about all the work needed to complete the project.
In addition, in the documentary we saw a white card at the Gilliam office, which can be the order of the actions of the project. By completing all the actions the movie can be completed, so for the project has no complete information. They can be scenes based on the location where they are reserved for the movie.
Communication:
Communication is an important skill. Without communication nothing can be done. To conduct communication there are different modes like face to face, email, phone. In movie we saw several ways of communication is observed. When Gilliam speaks to the staff is face to face communication or Gilliam speaks on the phone is also a way to communicate. One of the scene we saw Gilliam talking through the phone to see what happened to the Jean Rochefort (Don Quixote) who traveled to Paris to see a doctor, and to check if he is coming soon or not Budgeting:
Due to the tight budgets, the actors receive less money than they usually have. The fight began when a major investor returned at the last minute, which led Gilliam and the administration to reduce the budget from 40 to 32 million dollars. In this case, Gilliam needs to cancel some secondary content. In the documentary, they had half the money they needed to make a movie. Another example of pain in the budget is that if the insurance company refused to pay the cameras and other items after the rain destroyed them then they have to bear that expense too by own. This would increase the budget requirements and Gilliam already have half of the amount that he needed to make the movie.
Scheduling of project:
There are different techniques to schedule a project. These techniques enable the timely completion of project with intended cost. Time scheduling would be used to schedule the activities of project. The problem with time schedule is delayed time in a task is delayed in all future actions that’s why cannot perform the next task. In it things are done in a chain, if previous task is not completed cannot perform the next task. For example, Gilliam and his team knew what scenes to shoot, so they can make a timeline.
WBS/ RAM:
WBS shows the sub activities that are needed to complete the task. Breaking the structure helps to divide the responsibilities between the different departments. Matrix of responsible assignment (RAM) that shows the participation of several sections of the project to complete the film. It is created by project managers and partners. Your responsibilities for each task, particularly for the lower levels of division. As we have seen in the documentary, each of the members of the staff met their actions. To decorate the clothing design, the camera man has his own equipment and has the necessary clues and all the requirements for each stage, and the editors enhance the scenes.
Management of stakeholders:
Stakeholders are the person who gets affected by the activities of business. Owners, employees, customers, and community providers are examples of partners in any project. Returning to the documentary, investors, directors, camera team, equipment decoration team are examples of interesting parties. But when it comes to managing interest groups, it depends on the greater / lesser influence and interest. Gilliam is the director and he is the director of this project. So he should be the person to take care of stakeholders.
Project risk:
There were many risks we saw in the documentary. I want to explain two of them. The first danger is the climatic risk, which is difficult to handle. As we have seen that intense rainfall occurs near a military base near the site, the project is due to the damage to the team next to the delay. Damaged equipment can be solved by the insurance company, but the waiting time will be difficult to solve until all staff works in extra time.
Close out of project:
As seen in Lost at La Mancha due to the struggles they faced, the project was not successful. Jean has a number of health problems, one of the main reasons behind some major scenes. Delay in movies cancels many reserves and they will not be able to make future plans that no one knows when Jean returns.
Errors need to be fixed:
We should not talk about any climate change in this section, but these days we can verify the time before time. As we saw in the photo, all the filming date was interrupted due to a rainstorm and the damage to the devices was not mentioned. In addition, they cannot use the same place until they are dried, because the ground is another fight.
Although Rochefort is a wonderful actor, he has a health problem with one of the main characters that Rochefort chooses to film in a dangerous situation. Gillam should choose another director.
Conclusion:
What I found in this documentary covers all the project management concepts like project selection, scope, communication, budget, scheduling, WBS/RAM, stakeholder management, risk, project close-out. How is it applied in real life. Moreover, That’s true filming the movie in 2002 didn’t success, but Gilliam did his best with a new investor and produced the movie in 2018.
