Owing to the fact that the senior management of the Creating Shipping Solutions or CSS has realized that there is some loss of cohesion among the employees in the office, as an individual tasked with the responsibility of setting and chairing the initial meeting of the office staff members in order to discuss the perceived problems, it will be important for me to ensure that I correctly identify the individuals who will have to attend the meeting. Various reasons are given as to why the people were chosen to attend the meeting. The first draft for the agenda of the meeting is also stipulated here.
The individuals who will attend the meeting and the reasons behind it
- The Ship Senior Officers based in the United Kingdom, Bulgaria, and Norway-These are the best people to attend this meeting since they are well aware of their employees or staff who are working under their jurisdiction and as a result, they can easily give the major reasons as to why there is no cohesion among the staff.
- Ship Junior Officers based in India and Philippines-These individuals are also better suited to attend the meeting since they are in a better position of knowing the various problems facing their employees. As a result, they will be in a better position of explaining the lack or loss of cohesion among their employees and give viable solutions that can be used in addressing this problem.
- The Ship Crew Officers based in Indonesia-These individuals are in a better position of knowing the problems afflicting them and which they may have feared to their seniors. As a result, inviting them to the meeting will present a good opportunity for them to air their problems and probably give the way forward on how the loss of cohesion in the company can be effectively resolved.

As you are all aware, groups and teams have a significant impact on the general behavior of all of us as employees of the company. Group cohesion is a vital concept for us as an organization. This is because it helps members of our company working in different parts of the world to work as one entity. As a result, having good working relations and interactions among the subordinates, the superiors, and peers is indeed important and vital aspects of our organizational life. This is attributed to the fact that it will help us to achieve both organizational and personal goals in our daily lives. Following the perceived lack of cohesion among the members of our staff in our organization, I hereby wish to bring to your attention of the above meeting. Among other issues to be discussed is to ascertain the major causes for the lack of cohesion among our staff and seek for possible solutions to address the problems.
In shipping management, one of the vital and essential aspects is estimation of the costs which are associated with a voyage. This is indeed quite important since it makes a significant difference between making a voyage to become successful and making profit. In addition to that, estimation of the costs associated to a voyage is indeed quite important since it also makes a significant difference between a voyage being unsuccessful as well as making of a loss. The table below depicts the estimated voyage costs, their total costs, and the people responsible for the payment of the numerous voyage costs.

- Capital Costs-This is mainly depended on two major things namely how the ship has been financed. For instance, if the ship has been financed by a loan, then this will depend on the source, size, interest rate, and the terms of such a loan. Capital costs are paid by the ship owner. Another factor that will determine the capital cost of the ship is Depreciation which refers to both the declining in the value of the assets and the allocation of the tangible assets to the periods in which such assets have been used. It is also important to note that the depreciation of the costs will be highly dependent on the costs of the assets, the expected “salvage value” of an asset, the estimated “useful life” of an asset, and the method that is used in apportioning of costs on such a life.
- The Operating cost-This includes among others the crew costs which includes both the direct as well as the indirect costs. The direct costs include among others the wage costs, the travel costs, the on “board victualing”, trainings, and union fees. Paid by owner and clients. The indirect costs are composed of the social dues, the medical tests, the selection and recruitment process, the sick pay, the crew “accident insurance” payments, communication, agency fee, port expenses, and bank charges. The total costs of a crew are depended on the size of the crew, the employment policy of the operator or owner, and the ships flags.
- The Repair and Maintenance Costs-These are paid by the owner of the ship and they include among other costs
- Routine maintenance of the ship-maintaining of the engine and the equipment as well as painting.
- Periodic maintenance-in the repair yards or dry-docks in order to maintain the sea worthiness as well as obtain certification for insurance.
It is important to note that breakdown costs increase with the age of the ship and averagely accumulates for 14 percent of the operating costs.
- Insurance Costs-paid by the ship owner and they also vary from one ship to the other.
- Administration costs –These are usually “shore based” administration as well as management costs and include the communication costs, voyage costs, and the port charges.

Owing to the fact that shipping is indeed a major user of most of the oceans across the world because it helps in delivering of more than 80% of the world trade through ferrying passengers to their respective destinations as well as carrying thousands of tourists on the cruises, it is important that regulations are put in place to safeguard their use. “The International Maritime Organization or IMO is thus a United Nations (UN) agency that is tasked with the responsibility of ensuring that”: there is the development and adoption of relevant measures that can be used in the enhancement of the safety as well as the security of the international or global shipping and ensure that there is prevention of pollution that emanates from the ships. As a result, IMO plays an integral role in ensuring that the targets which have been set out or stipulated by the “United Nations Sustainable Development Goal” (SDG) 14 are well met. The targets are the conservation and the sustainable use of seas, marine, ocean resources to achieve sustainable development.
