Introduction
The modern period for management is considered to be 1960 onwards till present, Traditional management resulted in owners themselves being managers, this changed with larger corporations coming up. Under modern management thought three streams of thinking patterns have been noticed
- Quantitative Approach
- Systems Approach
- Contingency Or Situational Approach
Henry Fayol was considered to be the real Father of Modern Management, In his book General And Industrial Management he had explained the 14 Principles Of Modern Management.
Concepts And Application-Mr. Ajay who has been appointed as a Manager to handle the overall functioning of the business of
M/s Paper Write Corporation has worries about the following things:
- One person reporting to three bosses
- No specialized worker in the factory
- Long hierarchy to get any approval
- No following of rules and regulations
- No designated place for inventory, tools, equipment’s, etc.
- The team work among employees is missing
Mr. Ajay is advised to use the Principles Of Modern
Management By Henry Fayol
He can use the following five principles of modern management to overcome the above mentioned problems which need change:
- UNITY OF COMMAND-Unity of command provides that an employee is responsible to only one supervisor, who in turn is responsible to only one supervisor, and so on up the organizational hierarchy.
This is true even if the top of the organization is led by a group of people. In M/s Paper Write Corporation, currently one employee is reporting to three bosses. Mr. Ajay should use the unity of command and make sure one employee reports to only one boss/superior
- Division Of Work-The division of labour is the separation of tasks in any system so that participants may specialize.
Individuals, organizations, and nations are endowed with or acquire specialized capabilities and either form combinations or trade to take advantage of the capabilities of others in addition to their own. In paper write corporations, Mr.Ajay should divide the work effectively to increase specialization to further increase quality and efficiency.
- Scalar Chain-Scalar chain is the formal line of authority which moves from highest to lowest rank in a straight line. This chain specifies the route through which the information is to be communicated to the desired location/person. In M/s Paper Write Corporation, there is long hierarchy to get any approval. Mr. Ajay should use the principle of scalar chain to avoid wastage of time and increase efficiency.
- Discipline -According to Fayol, “Discipline means sincerity, obedience, respect of authority & observance of rules and regulations of the enterprise”. This principle applies that subordinate should respect their superiors and obey their order. It is an important requisite for smooth running of the enterprise. Discipline is not only required on path of subordinates but also on the part of management. Discipline can be enforced if:
- There are good superiors at all levels.
- There are clear & fair agreements with workers.
- Sanctions (punishments) are judiciously applied.
In M/s Paper Write Corporation, rules and regulations are not followed thus, Mr. Ajay can use the principle of discipline to make sure the rules and regulations are followed and the inventory, equipment and tools are kept in designated places.
- Espirit De Corps-the common spirit existing in the members of a group and inspiring enthusiasm, devotion, and strong regard for the honor of the group.
In M/s Paper Write Corporation, Mr. Ajay should use the principle of Espirit De Corps to establish team spirit amongst the corporation
Conclusion
To work in an efficient manner, M/s Paper Write Corporation has to make changes in many methods which can be done by the manager who is Mr. Ajay if he follows the 14 principles of Management Of Henry Fayol.
