Developing emotional intelligence in the workplace
1. Development of a strong and effective workplace is the priority of the management of the business organization. It is important for the management of the business organization to develop success by maintaining a strong emotional intelligence in the most professional process. The case study provided here has assessed the issues within the workplace in between two employees. The current circumstances related to Beryl and Yuko have had an impact on the organizational development. Some of the emotions that Yuko can feel in the workplace are as follows;
- Helpless- Yuko is feeling helpless in the workplace as the absence of proper support in the workplace has led to her current situation. Her helpless situation has made her unproductive which has been a problem for both the company and the team.
- Stressed- Constant issues with Beryl and the lack of proper support within the team has made her feel stressed and emotionally weak in nature. Such a process has made her it problematic for productivity.
- Sadness- The current issues with her has made her sad as the current problems within the workplace. She feels that her caste and creed has been a problem for the others.
- Fear- The current situation, loss of proper support has made it problematic for Yuko. She has a feeling that she might lose her job.
- Nostalgia- Yuko may feel home sickness as she is quite stressed with the differences in workplace behavior because of her cultural differences.
2. Similar to the case of Yuko, Beryl has also some issues that have been an important part of the workplace conflict. Some of the major emotions that Beryl is facing are as follows;
- Confusion- Beryl is confused on the fact that Yuko might not be interested in the job anymore and therefore she is not delivering properly.
- Dissatisfaction- The expected targets are not being met by Yuko and therefore Beryl is dissatisfied that she is not performing like the other team members.
- Anger- As the performance of Yuko has went down; it has made an impact on the overall team performance. The absence of proper performance has made Beryl Angry.
- Disliking- Disliking is basically because of the aforementioned emotions of Beryl. The absence of proper trust and reliability can lead to loss of emotions.
- Awe- Yuko is no longer motivated or enthusiastic on her work.
3. Workplace situation is one of the most important elements f the modern day business process. Low emotion, lack of trust and support, absence of proper environment can have a serious impact on the workplace development. Five possibilities that the manager can be feeling are as follows;
- Stressed on the fact that the organization is not performing on the same note. The lack of proper workplace culture is an issue with the organization.
- The absence of proper workplace operations is basically due to the development of the unsettled operations.
- Unprofessionalism approach of the current workplace has been a major issue for the operations manager. Such a process has led to the development of the business process in an effective and organized manner
- Disappointed with the performance of the team. The lack of proper performance from the apart of the team has been quite a problem for the organization as such a process has muffled the operations manager
- Uneasy as because the lack of proper professionalism
4. Cultural differences are quite a major issue for the business organizations. The presence of diversity is a major factor for the development of the business in an efficient process. Some of the major cultural differences are as follows;
- Japanese are introvert and do not intend to express an opinion for the same reason. On the other hand, an Australian prefers to provide a number of different reasons for a specific purpose. Unlike the Japanese who prefer to raise their opinion when they feel inferior, Australians comment on issues when they prefer to say. Australians are generally much more confident on their opinions
- Australians have an expressive behavior while Japanese generally prefer to not express themselves easily.
5. Some of the techniques that can be important for the development of the thoughts and feelings of Beryl and Yuko are as follows,
- Providing proper space and time
- Reading the different emotional cues and signals
6. Some of the major techniques that can be used to ensure that Beryl and Yuko the opportunity to reflect on the effects of the behaviors and emotions are as follows;
- Development of self-awareness
- Development of different forms of training related to emotional Intelligence
7. Some of the advices that can be important to assist the self emotions are as follows;
- Staying calm is important for success
- Develop the positivity of the business process
- Focusing on the future and not the past
- Developing the culture of not blaming each other in moment of crisis
- Listening to understand properly
8. A step by step approach for resolving the workplace situation is as follows;
- Identification of the issues
- Finding out the major areas of disagreement
- Development of the common goal
- Organization of ways to address the goals
- Acknowledgement of the agreed solution

Operations Manager: Good Morning to both of you. Please have a seat.
Beryl: Good Morning Sir. Thank you
Yuko: Thank You sir. Good Morning
Operations Manager: So let’s order something and then start the meeting
Beryl: That will be great sir
Yuko: Yes I agree
(Ordering something)
Operations Manager: So let’s start off the meeting. So coming straight to the point will you guys let me know about the issues you are facing with each other, please feel free to say as the meeting here is a personal meeting that involves only three of us.
Beryl: Thank you for calling us Sir. I believe this meeting is needed for the development of the business process. It is important for us to develop success in the most efficient and organized manner to ensure development in the most emphatic manner.
Yuko: I also believe the same Sir. It has been quite stressful for me which has led to problems.
Assessing workplace issues faced by Beryl and Yuko
Operations Manager: So that’s great please say the issues.
Beryl: Sir to be very fair I have benever racially abused Yuko or neither have I said anything directly which can be a problem but Yuko always keeps quite in meetings.
Yuko: Sir the fact is that I have never been asked directly on something. As Japanese we are not able to directly communicate with people. So there remains a communication gap.
Operations Manager: Beryl I must ask you on why you cannot directly speak to Yuko as Yuko is under you and you are responsible for her productivity
Beryl: Sorry Sir I have not been able to fully concentrate on my work since the extension. But I believe I can improve on it and change my approach. I will surely make it a point to involve Yuko in all decisions from now on.
Yuko: I will be happy with that.
Operations Manager: And I want your confirmation from both of you on the fact that you must not discuss anything with others regarding the meeting or in the workplace
Beryl: I promise to do so
Yuko: Sure sir, same with me
Operations Manager: That is great. I want your full confirmation and support on our developmental process. I believe that a combined effort can surely improve our operations and ensure success for the company.
Beryl: I am sure it will
Yuko: Sure sir
Operations Manager: That’s great so let’s end it here. I will be taking a strict observation on the happenings from now on and I believe both of you to show your professionalism in a proper manner to ensure success.
Beryl: We will Sir. What do you say Yuko?
Yuko: Oh yes surely we will.
Operations Manager: Ok then thank you and have a good day.
