Growing up and attending schools in Enterprise, Alabama, I have always had a dream of returning to rural Alabama to touch the lives of students through education as many of my former teachers have touched me. Throughout my school years there have been numerous teachers who have greatly influenced my life in many ways. One such teacher is Mrs. Marquita Morgan, my sixth grade teacher at College Street Elementary in Enterprise, Alabama. She worked extra hours every day to prepare me for the citywide Math competition that consisted of sixth grade students from six elementary schools in Enterprise.
She had a very special talent for teaching that made learning math fun.
Through drills and working math problems every day for months, I successfully accomplished my goal of making the Math Team. Not only did she teach me math skills, she also taught me how to have strong self-confidence. Having a teacher who has a true desire for education and a genuine concern for each student in the classroom provides an invigorating experience that transcends the classroom into life itself.
Mrs. Morgans willingness to go the extra mile is what draws me toward the field of education, especially teaching science and math in the elementary classroom.
Another person who has encouraged me to become a teacher is my aunt, Joy Davis. She is the Chairperson of the Science Department and teaches advanced level science courses at Samson High School. The classes that she teaches include Advanced Chemistry, Physics, Advanced Anatomy, and Biology.
Through observing her, I now see that science in the classroom can be fun. She goes the extra mile to make every student grasp the concepts being taught, while also making the class interesting. As I enter the teaching profession I will strive to be the type of teacher that also makes learning fun.
With role models like Mrs. Morgan and Aunt Joy, I have concrete figures to look upon and draw experience and passion for teaching. With my various leadership activities throughout my high school and college experience I have gained many wonderful leadership lessons that will enable me to be the most effective teacher I can be in the classroom. I am confident through having visible mentors, holding many leadership positions, and having obtained experience in a classroom setting, there is no doubt that I will be an effective, successful teacher.
I am presently enrolled in the Aerospace Science for Educators class (AE120) at the University of Alabama. I have also completed Biology, Physical Science, Pre-Calculus, and Calculus. In the remainder of my course of studies at the University of Alabama I will be completing the required courses to earn my degree in Elementary/Early Childhood Education. Some of the classes that pertain to science and math that I will be taking are Pre-Calculus/Algebra, Teaching Elementary School Science, and Teaching Elementary Math.
The University of Alabama classes that I will need to complete my undergraduate requirements are as follows: BEF362, HPE364, CAR375, BCT300, CEE360, CRD369, BER450, SPE302, CEE365, CEE370, CEE304 (Teaching Elementary Science), CEE366, CEE380 (Teaching Elementary Math), CEE478, and CEE497 (Internship). My expected graduation date is December 2001. You will note that I will be taking science and math classes in coming semesters as I prepare to be a successful elementary school teacher.
I am excited about sharing my knowledge of science and math with my students as I enter the teaching profession. I will greatly appreciate being considered for the Alabama Space Grant Consortium Teacher Education Scholarship.
