My Journey to Literacy

I came from China to live in United State as a resident. Literacy sounds more important to me and became a life issue. I did have my literacy which is in Chinese. When the time I immigrant here. America use different culture and literacy. I have to say I got stuck sketching totally. Literacy is affecting my families, my career, and my social perspective. Literacy and family. Seeking back in 1993, when I first stepped on this country. I was about 22 years old.

I just pasted the 21 years guild line of entering High School. I was immigrant to United State through marriage status.

Once I set foot on America, I already enroll for my ESL classes. However, base on lack of my new marriage experiences, I got my baby boy out of my plan. Even I was working in big Clothing Company. I could make good money and pay 11/2 after eight hours. I still not feel happy about what I was doing.

I like to get in touch with the people. I need friends and not just need to work and eat. Mentally I need to melt myself into this country’s culture and outcome I can enjoy my life. Especially my little boy started gabbling his language between Chinese and English.

I wanted to communicate him and build up a good attachment and understanding relationship with him. I started to work one side and consistency learns reading and writing on the other side through TV, magazine, Food label, grocery shopping etc.

I collected lots of words from different areas to build up my vocabulary, and into sentences. But still it was not a formal learning. I ended up struggling on the misunderstanding all the time. However, through this it was helpful for me to keep myself up, because of English Literacy plus my own native Chinese.

I can able to work as a part time after school teacher assistant in a Unified District with at my son’s school. Through the volunteering I grained more confident to keep myself going and also grained more experiences on how to assist my son through his school years and later on his growth. Such as: PTA meeting, homework, discussion of how to deal with his school bullying, school selecting, and much more. Literacy affecting my . Turned around, it is not hard to find the people around you just can work at a single job for years and years. It was very sad by that scenario.

In their life, work and go home and stay with their families are all about it. They usually didn’t have smile. And do not know what the world around them is. Inside of it was full of anxious and unhappiness. They were afraid of getting lay off and can’t find jobs. They were more afraid of where they can go. Comparing with this, I was much easier being hired by a company. Even through not with high salary but at least I can get a job as a cashier, a restaurant waitress, an office clerk and so on. Here as I did my review, it was all about literacy, and how you locate literacy’s important position in your life.

It was lots of difficulties, but it was worthy, valuable and important to solve this puzzle which is taking affect in your life time. Literacy takes part in my society. Illiteracy can’t get me pass my Citizenship test and became a Citizen of United State. No doubt, through all the learning of reading and writing. I grained more benefits on working with different tests and voices from the political. I even could joint my vote to present my opinions which made me feel good about it. As being as a teacher as my passion my literacy boot me back to the Major of Child Development.

I can able to take different classes and write essay to pass my Final. I still felt a long way of learning ahead. But I definitely will throw more strength on it. Through computer technology today, I think literacy became more powerful tool to use in a social group. People are more reliable on testing and messaging through typing. More writing involves describing their ideas and thoughts. For me, whatever how, literacy is extremely important to me to improve. Without literacy I think I will just get “suck”. Poverty and Illiteracy. I believe in the majority of persantage of Poverty were out of illiteracy.

No practical reading and writing skill. It will limit your careers, critical thinking and the way to solve and approach the problem. In other word is your mindset is affecting by your education and education successful is base on your literacy level. Those elements are linking together. For example, when the time I was work in a sewing factory, there was lots of machine which need to read and operate. If I can’t read, write and speak to my supervisor. I won’t be able to keep the job. Without jobs my totally family income will drop down to a poverty line level.

My children will not able to buy new cloth and go to a nice restaurant. What I ended up will be apply food stamp and became a burden for the society. And of course, that is not what I want. What I want is be independent, earn and pay back to the society. In a conclusion, literacy is so important that we all need to understand the how and why. And that is also the reason I want to take English 92 to learn more about how to read and write in a formal way to improve my literacy compare with myself. Literacy is everywhere, and everywhere will become your learning “corner”.
