Organizational Behavior: An organization is a social invention that accomplishes the goals through the efforts of groups of people it has recruited. The employees as a part of the organization interact with each other. Therefore, they share their thoughts and ideas with each other. Organizational behavior is related to the people’s feelings, thoughts and actions for doing the work. Therefore, understanding of one’s behavior is difficult and understanding of group behavior is a managerial task. Work in an organization is done by the employees in an organization either individually or in a group. Therefore, the management of organizational behavior is central to the management of tasks. Thus, organizational behavior can be defined as the study of individual behavior or study of the interaction between the people of the organization or the behavior of the individual towards the organization.
Objective: The main purpose of the report is to analyze the concept of organizational behavior in the company. The organizational behavior can be studied with the help of employees’ behavior towards the organization and towards the other employees. Also, the study is done on the basis of that how the goals and objectives of the company is achieved by good organizational behavior. Team management and decision making are also obtained with the help of organizational behavior.
“Lodge my Trip” is an online company that provides hospitality service as well as accommodations in rent and or in the lease. It provides accommodations for long stay , short stay and hotel rooms. The company trades between the hosts and the guests and charge a fee from both. The company has 30 employees who manage the operation in the company like online marketing, IT teams, inspection and customer service. Motivation is basically a factor that helps in increase of intensity and working direction in the particular side to achieve goals and objectives. Direction represents the path to where the employee engages their efforts. Motivation for a person is goal directed. It helps a person to achieve a certain goal in a particular time period. The motivation for an employee is a tool that triggers the work efficiency of an employee (Burton, 2012). It helps in an individual to remain busy in the work and focus on the goals. Employee performance depends on various factors such as appraisals, financial benefits, employee satisfaction and motivation. Also, the factors include job security, organizational environment, growth, training and development. Employee motivation is one of the factors that helps managers to improve the work efficiency. If an employee is motivated, he or she will be working to achieve the goals and directs its work in the direction of goal accomplishment. Employee motivation is affected by the workplace environment (Heathfield, 2016). Also, to achieve the objectives, the communication between the employers and the employees must be free flowing. With the help of proper communication among the employees the goals are communicated properly and the employees will work in the proper direction. Satisfied employee will work efficiently. The two theories are created during the study of motivation. These theories are content theories and process theories.
Employees Motivation
The content theory looks on the specific needs that motivates people. Content theory focus on individual needs, rewards, behavior and job satisfaction. The theory is based on the concept that if individual needs are not satisfied or there is a deficiency in the needs satisfaction, the employee will do whatever satisfies his or her needs. The needs are growth needs and deficiency needs. The content theory model of motivation
The employee attempt many ways to satisfy their needs. Similarly, in Lodge my trip there are certain needs of the employees. If these needs are not satisfied the employee will shift to another company (Stotz & Bolger, 2014). These needs in Lodge my Trip should be satisfied with the help of rewards and appraisals. Rewards and appraisals act as a motivation to the employees. With the time the needs of each individual change. Each employee demand growth in the company with respect to finances as well as professionally. These demands are satisfied with the help of rewards to the employee. Also, these rewards act as a big source of motivation in the employees. If the employee feels motivated the work can be done efficiently and effectively in less time. “Lodge my Trip” should give rewards to the employees. From this employee will feel motivated. The working of the employee becomes efficient, which helps the customers to satisfy their needs. Customer satisfaction plays an important role in the online marketing industry. It will help the recommendation to others and will help in the growth of the company (Jonezora, 2014).
If the needs of employees are not satisfied then it motivates the employee in the direction of satisfying the needs from another source which is not good for the company. Therefore, for a company to progress the employee satisfaction is of great importance. Motivation to the employees is necessary to employee satisfaction. Job security is also one of the motivations. Growth opportunities in the professional front are also the motivation to the employee. Even though Lodge my Trip is not a big organization, but employees are satisfied with the help of growth in terms of their professional as well as in terms of finances (Ivanko, 2013).
3.1 Job attitudes
Job attitude is defined as a psychological tendency that is expressed by evaluating a particular entity that it should be favored or not. Therefore an individual evaluation can be done on the number of entities that may vary from person to person. Job attitudes are important as we know that jobs are important for every person. Each person job timing varies with their capacity of doing work. But the work done by an individual in that particular time varies with the working of each person (Judge & Kammeyer, 2012).
Therefore job attitudes are the evaluation of an individual towards the beliefs and attachment towards one’s job. Job attitudes are directly related to the job satisfaction. If the job attitudes of individuals are satisfied, then job satisfaction also arrives. Whereas it is not possible to satisfy the job attitudes of each individual. Therefore, a common set of attitude, satisfaction is made in the organization that are called global attitudes which are made so that the every individual can be satisfied with these rules. Global attitudes are made by the organization according to the work and task that are assigned to the employees. These global attitudes, thus depends totally on the working conditions of the employees. Lodge my Trip is the company in which the employees have to coordinate with the clients and have to maintain relations with the clients. The work pressure on the employees are more who deals with the clients. Also, It department has to remain updated during any problem occurred or any information updating. Therefore, each department has different job attitudes that must be satisfied by the company to make the employee satisfied. A satisfied employee will make the customer satisfied (Saari & Judge, 2004).
Content theory on Lodge my trip
There are relative different personalities of each individual towards the work and coworkers. Personality comprised of a person’s individual feeling, thought process and different behavior patterns. Each one has a unique personality traits that give understanding regarding how the person reacts to the situation. For managers, it is important to analyze the personality of the individual so as to make him or her effective in the work (Bauer & Erdogan, 2010). The managers of the organization should have the knowledge regarding the analysis of personality so as to place a person in the right department. This makes the working of an individual more effective and efficient.
“Lodge my Trip” should incorporate smart managers so that they can help in the hiring process and can analyze each individual and assign the work accordingly. It will help in the working. This will provide an individual to do work effectively in less amount of time. The job personality of an individual is not stable. Job personality changes with time and age. Behavior in the organization depends on the job personality. For example the person dealing with clients in Lodge my trip must be social and expressive that must help the clients. This job personality trait must be there in the employee who is dealing with the clients. Therefore, analysis of personality is must during the assignment of job for an individual. This will help in the good performance of an individual and help in the growth of the company as well as the growth of the employee (Corporation, 2010).
Job satisfaction refers to the feeling of an employee regarding the job. Job satisfaction is an individual criteria of assessment that is directly linked with the job performance and the efficiency of the work. Also, the performance of the employee is based on the task assigned to the employee and measured by the degree of performance of an employee. Motivation helps in the completion of the task, whether demotivated employee can leave the work. Therefore, motivation is highly needed in the workplace, for an employee to become more productive and effective. Good performance in the work gives employee job satisfaction. Also, the needs of the employee that must be satisfied by the company gives an employee the job satisfaction. Job satisfaction helps in improving the performance of an individual and helps in organizational commitment.
- High job satisfaction gives the positive feeling regarding the job
- Low job satisfaction gives negative feeling regarding the job.
Employees are highly satisfied when their needs related to the jobs are satisfied. The needs related to the jobs are rewards, appraisals, financial growth, promotions, career growth by providing training and learning sessions, etc. Rewards and appraisals should be given to each employee after measuring the job performance. The rewards help in the motivation of the employee and makes the employee more productive towards the work. Lodge my Trip should also follow the reward system as for the employee and for the gig workers as both are the important for the online working. The reward will motivate employees and help in working effectively.
Employees consider some aspects when they consider about the job satisfaction. These aspects are different for each employee as well as for the gig workers. For the regular employee pay satisfaction, growth satisfaction, coworker satisfaction and satisfaction from their own work is needed. Therefore, job satisfaction in this context for each individual is whether the employer provides the things which each individual value. Dissatisfaction is faced when individual requirements are different and employer is doing else for the satisfaction. Gig worker satisfaction is based on the work they are doing (Laz, 2016). The gig workers also require rewards if the work is completed before time. Gig workers are not the permanent employees of the company. They are hired whenever needed during the work Therefore, the gig workers are given some targeted work that must be completed by the deadline. Therefore, job satisfaction for the gig workers differ to that of regular employees. As gig workers wants from the company that work should be assigned to them whenever required by the company, if the company is satisfied with their work. Also, some rewards must be paid to them.
Job description
Lodge my trip should provide the job satisfaction to their employees, so that effective work is done by them. As, from an employer point of view, effective work of the employees leads to the growth of the company. Employees should be promoted according to their work, they should be given the appraisals, pay hikes time to time for the effective and efficient work by them (Glenzer, 2013).
4.1 Decision making
Decision making refers to the choosing an alternative between different choices. Decision making in an organization is done by the managers. Therefore, sole responsibility of decision making is given to the managers. Although while taking any decision the communication between the employees should be important so that the decision will go in a right path. Effective decision making is done by involving employees in the discussion process and views should be taken. Effectiveness in the decision making affects the efficiency of work (Kazimoto, 2016). A right decision help in doing the work in a proper manner, whereas a wrong decision results in doing the work again. Therefore, specification related to the work should be taken into account while making any decision. For example decision making in Lodge my Trip related to the client requirements. If the requirements are not taken into account, it will lead to suggestion of wrong alternatives. This will annoy the client. Therefore, decision making plays an important role in building the clientage.
The rational decision making model utilizes an analysis of facts and steps to step verification of the process to make any decision. It is the precise and analytical way of decision making where each facet is examined before making a decision (Lombardo, 2017). The rational decision making model comprises of identification of problem, information gathering, analyzing the situation and then developing the options. After that the alternative is chosen foe the decision making.
The model is utilized in “Lodge my trip”. This model helps in firstly identifying the requirements of clients. The requirements are based on their stay in which city, time and accommodation type. After identifying the requirements of the clients the information regarding the available accommodations in the particular city is collected. Therefore, the company develops the list of options for the requirements of the clients. This list of options is evaluated and then sent to the clients. Evaluation is based on the time of stay, prices and the specific requirements that are mentioned by the client. Then the decision of sending a finalized list is to the client is taken. The rational decision making model provides discipline and structure to the decision making process. The work is done in steps that will help in considering all the factors that are mentioned by the clients. This will make the client satisfied. Therefore, the rational model will work best for the “Lodge my Trip” as it fits to the requirement of decision making in the organization (Black’s Law Dictionary , 2016).
4.2.1 Formulation of team
A new team is formed according to the work roles. A good team is formed when each employee of the team interacts with each other and focus towards their goals. The team finds the way to achieve their goals. Therefore, a team has to regulate their interpersonal interaction so as to make progress towards their goals. Work teams are subject to variation of structural features that drive interactions and exchanges among members. Interpersonal issues are relevant, but they do not dominate the developmental process (Kozlowski & Bell, 2001). There are also existing teams that are governed by existing set of roles. The new entry in the team is subject to the mixing up the new member by the older members. Socialization help in the formulation of a good team and helps in achieving the goals in time.
Team effectiveness helps the organization to gain a competitive advantage. An effective team work is presented only if the team members are satisfied with their work and with the coworkers of the team. Socializing with the team members is a way to form an effective team by understanding others perspective towards the work. The members of the teams have their individual work, but socializing is important for preparing the full task that is done by the team (UVIC, 2012).
Team effectiveness can be achieved by focusing on the factors like goals, relationships, roles and leadership. The goals are the tasks that have to be achieved by the teams. Relationships explains about the interpersonal behavior of the team members with each other. This helps in the interaction and help in finding the solution of the problem that arises during the work. Each team member is assigned a different work, in the team (Meuse, 2012). Their work is interdependent on the other team members. Therefore, interaction will help in the proper progress of the work in the right direction. Leaders work is very important. Leaders give motivation to the team and supports the team during the work. A good team leader helps in the effective working of the team. Team effectiveness helps the team to be precise and effective towards the goals. Similarly, in the case of Lodge my Trip a team should be formed so that the work can be done in précised and in an effective manner. The goals of the teams should be made clear and members should be socialized so that data collection in the team should be précised and workable to the clients. Team effectiveness involves sharing of view point of each member that give alternatives to make a decision. In case of Lodge my Trip the alternatives are necessary for clients so that the decision could be taken at their end (Shaw, et al., 2011).
Communication means sharing of ideas, information and facts so as to make a decision. Decision making is influenced by communication process. In the organization, communication helps in conveying the goals to the employee, it helps in correct decision making and also help in finding the solution to a problem. The success of an organization depends on the communication system in the organization. The communication from upper to lower levels and vice versa is important for the success of the organization. If each employee has the understanding regarding the goals, the work can be done effectively. Therefore, the goals can be conveyed to the employees by communicating with the employees (Bakker, 2008). Therefore the communication process helps in
- Clarity of the purpose
- Effective sharing of the information
- Decision making
- High performance
Communication fulfills three main functions of the organization that are transmitting information, coordination of work and sharing feelings.
Communication in an organization can be done directly as well as by the informal way. In the direct communication the managers directly convey the goals to the employees. But, in case of indirect communication the goals are conveyed by indirect method that is by coworkers. The conversation can be done in upward manner as well as downward manner. In upward manner the employees give suggestion to the managers and in downwards the goals and working criteria is explained to the employees by the managers (Singh, 2014). There are three ways in which communication can be done.
- Verbal communication
- Nonverbal communication
- Technology aided communication
Verbal communication is done in spoken on in written modes whereas non verbal communication channels are complex. The impact and reliability of nonverbal communication is higher than the spoken word, but it is conditioned to proper interpretation and the ability to place it effectively in a framework of wide communication which includes other channels as well. The technology aided communication is highly recommendable as clear views regarding the goal is conveyed (Turkalj & Fosic, 2012).
Therefore Lodge my Trip should incorporate technology aided communication. As it is an online marketing system the tasks should be informed by online methods. Also, an understanding of the customers’ requirements is made with the help of technology that is the internet.
Effective communication has some barriers that should be removed by the organization to improve communication. These barriers are
Lack of clarity: an honest expression must be passed to the employees so that the main goal can be achieved. Sometime due to the language problem the lack of clarity arises. This must be reduced so that relaying of the information can be done properly.
Lack of proper coordination: Due to differences between the employees the information is not transmitted properly. Proper channel of interpersonal communication in an organization has to be followed for improving the organizational productivity (Ergen, 2010).
Therefore, effective communication in a “Lodge my trip” should be followed so that the proper clarity of work requirements and coordination among the employees should be maintained. This will help the company to grow quickly and achieve its goals.
Feedback is the most effective component of a successful business. The research has shown that the business that are taking the feedback are more pointed towards their goals and lay the scope of improvement as compared to those who does not depend upon feedback. A tool to take feedback from each employee as well as customer should be developed by the organization so that a clear feedback can be achieved from the customers. A complaint system and surveys should be done so that the problem in the business can be identified and improvement can be made to eliminate the problem. Feedback help an organization to grow with the help of customer opinion and can make changes according to the feedback so as to earn profits and growth in the business (Edmunds, 2017).
6. Conclusion
Organizational behavior is a vast subject that includes the different aspects of an organization. It includes employees motivation, job satisfaction, decision making, team management and communication in the organization. Each aspect is analyzed in context with “Lodge my Trip”. According to the business point of view employees play an important role in the organization. Motivation, job satisfaction and decision making, all of this depends on the employees. Also, a manager or a team leader can help with the proper working of an organization. Motivation of an employee with respect to job growth in terms of profession as well as finances results in job satisfaction. A satisfaction in an employee results in effective working. Effective working leads to better decision making in the organization with the help of proper communication. Therefore, all these elements of organizational behavior are interdependent. Although, motivating employees is a complicated and challenging task. Lodge my Trip should find the requirements of their employees to make them satisfied so that their needs should be satisfied with right proportion which will result in the highly resistable environment, happily worked atmosphere and a loyal employee.
