The Republic of India’s government is divided into the legislative, the executive, and the judicial. India has both a President, Ram Nath Kovind, (Head of State), and a Prime Minister (Chief Executive). Politically, it’s is divided into 7 territories and 29 states. It has 14 official languages which include Hindi, Bengali, and English. India is located in South Asia and it’s allied with Russia, Israel, the US, France, Bhutan, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan. India has a population of 1.3 billion with a 1.1% annual growth rate.
84% of India’s population practices the religion Hinduism, 14% practice Islam, and 6% practice other religions. India has the 12th largest economy in the world with a GPD of 2.597 trillion USD at a 7.1 growth rate. In 1991 the economy moved to a market-based system with economic liberalization.
Some of the major cities in India are Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata, Bengaluru, and Chennai. By 2022, India is going to invest 50 trillion $ in infrastructure to have sustainable growth. India made an arrangement with ASEAN, Sri Lanka, and Thailand for pre-free trade agreement level relaxation programs.
17th largest exporter in the world. India is the 17th largest exporter and 14th largest importer in the world. In India Diamonds is 11.2% of total exports and Crude Petroleum is 16.1% of the total imports. India’s Top Trading Partners include the US (15.6%), UAE (10.1%), Hong Kong (5.1%). Its major mineral resources include Coal, Iron ore, Natural gas, Diamonds, Limestone and Thorium. India’s energy use has been growing rapidly due to population growth and economic development.
In 2005, India’s President said that energy independence has to be the county’s highest priority and that within the next 25 years India has to achieve energy independence.
One issue India is facing is first that five out of ten people in India are illiterate. Another issue is sanitation since there are about 700 million people in India who don’t have access to toilets and as a result of many rural schools not having toilets, parents don’t send their kids, especially girls, to school. A third big problem is poverty since India has about 33% of the world’s poor, and 37% of India’s total population lives in poverty. One last major issue in India is women’s safety. There were over 34,600 reported rape cases in 2015 and there hasn’t been much improvement in regard to women’s safety. Many female babies are abandoned, aborted, and underfed due to cultural norms where parents think that Males will safeguard their old age while females are just a burden that has to leave their parents’ home after they get married.
