Professional Ethics in Workplace Conflict
Discuss about the Portfolio Method for Chief Product Designer.
I am the chief product designer of my company. My job is to design different products based on their specifications. I confronted with a negative experience recently where my team leader asked me to design a product based on a provided blueprint. Initially, I took up the assignment that was provided to me. I researched about the product online and found out that the product was already used by another company. To worsen the situation, the blueprint design was totally similar to the other company’s design. I rejected the assignment immediately.
The reason of the conflict arose as my team leader did not think twice before giving me such an assignment. As the product was similar, the victim company could potentially harm your company’s reputation by charging us with infringement copyright violation laws. The company could have faced several lawsuits due to the activity. The team leaders refused to consider the situation and asked me to do the assignment without any more issues.
The conflict in the workplace scenario help me to learn some vital lessons. First of all, I was able to understand why working ethically in a profession is important. There will be unscrupulous opportunities which will be tempting at first. The team leader wanted to take a shortcut and reduce the time of the assignment submission. His actions could have caused the company a lot of damage. As the chief product designer of the company, I could have faced serious repercussions due to the actions of the team leader. Moreover, if we got in into trouble then my colleagues who are unaware of the whole incident could have faced trouble as well.
Considering the situation, I immediately wanted to face the situation directly. I decided that I had to talk to my senior authorities about this. I called them the very moment and arranged for a meeting with my team leader. I discussed with them the prospected implications of the situation and how the blueprint was similar to the product that I was told to develop. I also told them that I woud be able to create a better product if I was give some more time from scratch.
The positive impaction of the entire conflict was that my senior authorities considered my situation and decided to abandon the assignment. The negative side of the scenario was that I pissed off my team leader due to the mentioned actions.
ACS Code of Professional Conduct
I was unaware of the ghost writers until and unless I learned about this from my fellow classmates. I came to know that my certain classmates of mine were using ghost writers to achieve good grades in examinations. To response to this situation, I decided that telling my lecturer about the situation would be ideal for the entire scenario. I am well aware of the scenario that this action will have the potential to affect my relationship with my friends. In time, I hope they will come to understand my situation and that my actions were meant for their betterment.
An important element of ACS Code is professional development. Basically what it states is that as per its guidelines, my classmates should not use the work of another person to promote their professional conduct (Code of Ethics and Standards of Professional Conduct, 2018). Their action should not destroy the image of the profession and should not go against the ACS code of Professional conduct.
The next element of the ACS code of professional conduct is honesty. It mentions the situations where a person has to choose among a deceptive situation which has a lot of temptation and one which does not. The code states that such types of proposals should be rejected without anything else in mind. The profession wants the person performing it to be ethically sound irrespective of external temptations. They should understand the difference between their personal opinions and what the profession deserves (Acs.org.au, 2018). Proper credit needs to be awarded to the person who performs the profession. In this case, the ghost writers should be awarded for their conduct not the classmates. They should not have used the ghost writers for their own personal gains of achieving good grades in the examination.
Another aspect of the ACS code of professional conduct is competence. The code specifically mentions that a person should do a particular profession only if he or she is competent. The professional assignment should be immediately rejected if the task could not be performed in the best way possible. The mentioned scenario of the ghost writers states that the students are using those ghost writers to do their assignments. Their competency is assessed by the work that is provided by the ghost writers. As per the professional code, this is ethically incorrect. Another person’s work should not be misinterpreted for another person’s gains. If the students were unable to do the task they should have told the lecturer about their inability to do the task and the external help they need for completing the assignment. Doing the tasks with their own capability will help them to rise their satisfaction rate and competency level in the future.
ICT Topic and Its Implications
To complete the assignment I used my listening and verbal skills in certain situations. The topic was on 3d printing technology. The concept was very new to our team members so we researched independently and started an argumentative discussion. My listening and verbal skills during this time came into handy and helped us to gain a deeper understanding about the mentioned topic.
My reading skill in this scenario helped me to complete the assignment effectively. The reading skills were used while extracting information from online journals, company website pages, articles and books. Moreover, it helped me to assess the drafts of my team members and specify them which direction to work hard on. My skills helped the team to assess the several benefits of 3D orienting in the current market scenario.
While completing the assignment, my team work skills came in handy and my interpersonal skills helped a lot as well. The skills were used when we were conducting the analysis of different technologies of the 3Dprinting technology. The team was initially divided in opinions as who should carry which part of the assignment but my teamwork and interpersonal skills were used nu me to help the team understand that their cooperative efforts are needed to complete the assignment. It also helped during several decision making process.
The negative scenario that was experienced by me in my workplace helped me to understand the privacy, social and legal implications of the ICT topic. I also understood the ethical complications from certain medical scenarios of 3D printing technology and understood the legal implications from several copyright infringement of laws related to the technology.
I used my intercultural dependency during my work with my team members. As the team leader, I assigned different topics (of different importance) to all the members irrespective of their gender, race and colour. Many teams assign the higher importance tasks to the male children. I avoided this complications and used my diversity skills to acknowledge everyone equally despite their subtle differences.
Social media and video advertisements are good examples of communication and collaborative technology. The prospective industries can make use of these technologies to increase their reputations. They can use marketing strategies and use the platforms to gain customer feedback as well as initiate a two way communication for improving their products and services.
Data entry errors and data validation in real time is need for evaluating the ICT technologies effectively. The monitoring systems of the technology need to be checked and the scalability of the technology need to be evaluated. Proper evaluation of the ICT technology will allow for proper streamlining and optimization of the business processes. Different ICT technologies such as 3D printing technologies can be evaluated by measuring the accuracy of the systems. For proper evaluation, the system should deliver consistent results for a period of time.
For me, there were several unit learning experience from the given assignment. Personally for me, I think the first unit learning experience of the entire unit is the consideration of ethics in our professional conduct. No matter what the profession wants, we should never mix it with our personal opinions. The unit helped me to get a more intuitive knowledge about high ethical issues are addressed. It also helped me to assess the ACS Code OF Professional conduct closely. Another unit learning experience for me was the legal and social concerns that are raised for every profession. The concerns help us to address the professional conduct from different ethical point of views and judge them from every ethical perspective to check which suits the situation best.
The unit failed to provide a proper case study and an analysis section. The theoretical points were sufficient but the lack of practical knowledge and graphs was what could have benefited the assignment.
The ACS code of professional conduct intrigued me and gave me a whole new knowledge about ethical issues in professionalism.
