Overview of Proposed Change
In the opinions of Benedetto and Pajewski(2015), Civil Engineering is a form of engineering that helps to make, improve and design the construction as well as the buildings and other infrastructure that are used in the world. The work of the civil engineer is one of the most important in the world and I, as a civil engineer, have to go through a number of measures to keep my project work on time and have to apply a number of skills to make sure that the work is done efficiently and on time. The reflective paper is all about the problems that I face as a project leader of a civil engineering place and the changes that I propose. In addition, the paper deals with the skills that I employ to make sure that my commitment to my work is apt and employ the changes in an effective manner.
As a project leader, in my civil engineering project, I felt some changes are required to make sure that the work is done in an effective manner and also to the fact that that the changes are employed have some positive changes in the whole effect. The changes that are required for the effective working of the project can be termed as the need to employ more workers in the field who are skilled and organized in form skilled workers will enable the work to be done on time and also to make sure that the quality of work is good in terms of the unskilled labours. In addition, the requirement of these kind of labours will need more investment of money in the labour cost to make sure that each of them get the ample amount of payment that they deserve in the longer period. The increase in payment of the skilled labours will engage them more in the work and improve the business in the longer run. This view is according to the opinions of Frey and Osborne(2017) who state that the increase in skilled labour force in a real project makes sure that that the work is done in an effective manner and also to the fact that it saves a lot of time in return. The employment of more labour forces in the project work also ensures that the people who are conducting the work get some relief as they are not overburdened with work which can hamper their health. I propose the employment of more skilled labour force into the project as the proposed change in the course of time.
Comparison of Current State and Proposed Changes
The current state of the project is working on slow to medium pace as there is dearth of good quality labour forces who can perform the work with much ease. The lack of skilled labour is due to the shortage of money which needs to be employed to make sure that the change which is being proposed is done in an effective manner. The current stage of the project demands the employment of more labour forces who have expertise in the field to make sure that the change which is there in the required forces have to be abided by. The comparison between the current and the proposed changes states that the betterment of the working and in lesser time due to more employment of skilled forces by providing them money with more investment.
The proposed changes which is the employment of more skilled labour with more investment in the sources is necessary for the better working of the project. I as a project leader will always want my project work to be the best among all and that there are no faults that can be seen in the place. The employment of the good quality and skilled labour forces in the project will surely make sure that the work that is being done by the workers are of the best quality and so that the work is completed before the scheduled time which will satisfy the needs of the clients and they will come back to the organization for more. My work is to deliver work which is profitable for the organization and so the proposed changes in the organization are necessary.
The benefits of the proposed changes can be of many types like the completion of work within time and with the required expertise in each case. The benefits of the proposed changes can be termed as the work which is of high quality as well as timely completed work. The benefits of the proposed changes is also a better and happy client which can be a potential repeated client and can also suggest other clients to work with my organization. This will enable the reputation and work ethics of my organization and will also benefit the people working for this organization in the longer run. In addition, the employment of more skilled labour forces will generate more employment for the people which will again prove beneficial to the sources. The benefits of this single proposed changes will be many and will be enjoyed by all.
Necessity and Benefits of Proposed Change
Time Management is defined as the way in which the work and specific activities are controlled within a good amount of time without clashing on the events. The prospect of time management is one of the most important things for me in terms of my work as I have to maintain time within the different forms of work and also maintain a proper work-life balance. I manage my time with the help of a scheduled plan which I formulate at the beginning of the week and try to follow it every other day for the rest of the week. This ensures that I have the required amount of time to perform each of the work and also to analyse the work and give it the required time as needed. If I have something urgent for the week or something just comes out of nowhere, I try to incorporate that event within my time by replacing or reducing the other slotted times. The urgent work needs to be done within time and so I try to keep the works at an interval so that there would not be any problems in allocating time. The effectiveness of my time management skills can be seen in the results of my work and the timely completion of my projects which is of great importance to me. My boss as well as my organization is highly satisfied with my work which also proves my time management skills.
I have good communication skills as I can communicate and create my impression within the group of people in a very less amount of time. I can speak to a variety of people in a number of languages and can also adopt the tone and temper of the place and population. In my office, with my seniors I try to be professional and formal in my tone whereas with my colleagues and friends, I adopt a personal touch in my communication .My oral and written communication skills are at par with any professional as I try to improve with each passing day and enrol in online courses which help me modify my skills and improve the required. With my seniors and project workers, I try to be friendly yet strict to maintain the decorum of the place with cordial nature. This has helped me to go a long way. My communication skills are thereby one of my strengths I believe. My communication skills have helped me to overcome many challenges faced by me in the due course of time. It also helped in me to abide by the norms of engineering ethics.
Skills for Effective Project Leadership
I have a very cordial yet strict leadership skills and I like to collaborate with the thoughts and ideas of my seniors and juniors to make my own work better. I follow the transformational leadership way which is defined as the type of leadership technique that creates a positive impact on the people who are working under the leader (Avolio and Yammarino 2013). I am cordial yet particular about my work and expect my workers to maintain professional attitude in the workplace. According to Yukl(2013), the element of positive thinking is there in me which helps me to drive the best out of my workers which is one of the most important leadership skills. I am a good leader in my own terms with good leadership skills.
I am absolutely committed to the professional development of both mine as well as my organization. I am a team worker and like to grow along with my friends and colleagues. I make sure that I complete my assigned task within deadline with minimum error. Commitment is important in order to have an effective professional development as I am working as a civil site engineer. Apart from this, it is of utmost essence for me to be committed towards my work in order to meet the requirements of my job and meet my own aims and objectives. Commitment can be done by utilizing my skills in the most effective manner. I am a perfectionist and try to implement the measures in every possible manner. The work that is being done by me is also to be made at par the standards of my organization and both the client as well as my colleagues should acknowledge and appreciate my efforts in work. In addition, I also try to employ humane measures for the people working under me and provide motivation to them for updating with their tasks and also completing them in the span of time. I like to give profit to my organization which in turn helps the place to develop and have professional growth in the system. I am committed to my work in an extreme manner which is needed in any work mode.
According to Harris et al. (2013), engineering ethics is defined as the system of moral principles that are applied and used in the engineering practises to make sure that the work is done in a proper way. In addition, these ethics are the ways which makes the engineers feel obligated to the society and responsible for their work. Engineering ethics claim to be of the highest value to the engineers as they demand the maximum honesty and integrity from the engineers. I follow the code of engineering ethics in an honest manner and make sure that all my work are according to the ethics in utmost honesty and impact the people who are related to my work in an ethical and positive manner. My work of employing more employees who are skilled to the labour forces should impact the organization in a positive manner as that will ensure that the organization has more profit into the matter which will be gained with the kind of work that I do. Overall, my work is in relation to the engineering ethical code which is an important part of any engineering field.
