Components of Leadership
The aim of this report is to discuss the qualities of the leaders in a business context. There are some key components identified based on which the plan for personal development will be created. The key components are modelling the way, inspiring shared vision, challenging the process and enabling others to enact (Tourish, 2014). There are issues regarding the effectiveness of the organization. This is due to the fact that the leaders do not understand the requirements of the employees or the customers hence cannot apply their skills effectively. However, in this report, personal weakness will be identified. Some important factors of leadership will be discussed so that the needed changes can be brought in the personality which helps one to stand out in the crowd (Day & Miscenko,2015).
Leadership is the process through which the persons operate in the business and motivate the subordinates to follow his or her ideas to achieve a common goal. To many of the scholars, good leaders are not born rather self-educated (Meuser et al., 2016). Through will power, self- study, experience and proper training, the persons can build themselves to be successful leaders. In this regard, the scholars have proposed various concepts which identify the methods used by the successful leaders to motivate their employees or followers.
One of the most important personal quality that the people search in the leaders is the credibility of the leaders. This is the foundation of leadership as the people only believe the message when they believe the messengers (Tourish, 2014). Leaders therefore, model the way by finding their voice as well as setting an example. The leaders who are successful in life are actually stand for their beliefs. The leaders are clear in their guiding principles and they need to find their own ways and voices after which they will be able to authentically give voices to the values. However, the leaders cannot impose their own beliefs on the others. This is the reason why they need to engage the others or followers in the common aspirations. Thus, proper modelling of the ways from proper clarification of the values. The leaders successfully fulfilling these issues actually can handle the critical incidents with discipline and grace.
Leaders are driven by their clear image of possibility and what their organization could become. Leaders Inspire a Shared Vision by envisioning the future and enlisting others in a common vision (Yahaya & Ebrahim, 2016). They imagine various opportunities as they feel that they can make positive change in the organization. However, the leaders with vision cannot bring significant change themselves without any support from the others. Through expressive style and vivid language, the leaders can motivate their employees. Their own enthusiasm as well as excitements are spread to their followers hence the leaders are capable to lift their followers’ spirit up by ennobling their own perspectives (Antonakis, House & Simonton, 2017). For example, the Indian national hero Mahatma Gandhi believed in his own ideologies and envisioned the freedom of the country which he transmitted to his followers effectively.
The Importance of Credibility in Leadership
Leaders who operate successfully actually venture out. they lead their followers by accepting any type of challenge in their path of success (Day & Miscenko, 2015). Their question traditional culture and bring radical new ideas which enable them for reinventing their environment. By keeping the things just like before, no one gets success. The leaders search for opportunities all the time and know that innovation as well as challenge involve their experimentations, risks and often failure. In this process, the leaders often face failure but they learn from them as well as encourage the others for doing the same (Alavi et al., 2018). The task-oriented leaders prefer to keep control over the employees and motivate them through initiating, information gathering, clarifying and organizing. On the other hand, the people-oriented leaders focus on the employee satisfaction. Inserted of showing power, they follow the method of building human relation thus motivating the employees (Yahaya & Ebrahim, 2016). However, this is the factor that makes then victorious when applied successfully just like the historical leader Napoleon Bonaparte. He took the responsibility of the French Army to take challenges thus could bring changes in the country.
The leaders attract the talents to speak their language. Leaders construct a unity of purposes through showing their constituents to be aiming for a common good. The aim of the leaders is to make people feel capable, strong, informed as well as connected. All the successful leaders use power in the service of the others (Dinh et al., 2014). This can be done by enabling others to act rather not only by advertising the power that they have, but also by giving the power away. People have more discretion, authority, information, they aim to use their vitalities to produce an extraordinary result for their subordinates. The historical leader like Nelson Mandela was imprisoned for many years but his followers carried on his objectives as he believed in them and trained them not get distracted by anything but act what they believed,
Leaders are the chief motivators, policy makers and responsible to reach the goals of the organization (Popli & Rizvi, 2015). I have a personal experience in serving an organization as a production manager where I have worked for 5 consecutive years.
To become an effective leader, the first and foremost criteria is to know the feature and requirements of the task. In case I myself cannot to do the task, I cannot clarify them to my subordinates nor I can motivate them to complete the task. To be a leader hence proper knowledge about the organization is mandatory so that the nature can be traced quite easily (Choi, Kim & Kang, 2017). I shall be able to know the proper strategies to do the job and model the thing in a perfect manner (Storey, 2016). This will also help me to make strategies to model the way. Proper understanding of the methods and strategies will help me to identify the target customers as well as their needs based on which I shall be able to give my company a competitive advantage in the market (Day & Miscenko, 2015).
Inspiring a Shared Vision
Secondly, for an effective leader it is mandatory to possess vision and innovative features which they will share with their subordinates. Through sharing their visions, they can motivate the employees in one hand and negotiate with the stakeholders on the other (Day & Miscenko, 2015). Despite the fact that the great business leaders do not have to be great orator but they must know the method of sharing their vision and ideas to their subordinates so that they can follow the path guided by the leader and reach the desired destination (Yahaya & Ebrahim, 2016). This is the reason why I need to be truthful and execute positive attitude in my communication. Based only this, I will be able to share my vision and thoughts to my people.
The successful leaders think a common matter out of the box which enable them to judge everything from different perspectives. In this regard the may face challenges which will resist innovation and opportunities (Days & Miscenko, 2015). Risk taking mentality is another factor that I need to incorporate in me. This is due to the fact that I lack confidence (Choi, Kim & Kang, 2017). The responsibility of the all the employees on me, makes me weak and intimidate. However, to be a good leader, I need to find out the positive side of all the matters especially when I need to make decisions (Tourish, 2014). I need to have wisdom to manage any negative outcome which will help me to grow risk taking mentality in me.
Finally, I need to understand the importance of working in a team. Therefore, as a leader I need to have team building skills which includes my ability to attract the top talents within the organization. I need to know that I cannot complete a task alone hence enable others to act and need best talents to enhance the opportunities to gain success (Storey, 2016). Through healthy discussion and generating consensus of the team members I can built a successful organization. I need to understand the importance of recognizing the talents of the others rather of myself (Boamah et al., 2018). By following all these strategies, I shall become an efficient leader.
Conclusion
Therefore, it can be concluded that the leadership concepts are important to discuss in order to understand the features of the leaders in an organization. In order to motivate their employees or followers, the leaders use their charisma or the behaviors. There are concepts that help to understand the situation of the business and guide the leaders to achieve the perfect features to motivate the employees on the basis of development. There are some personal issues discussed in this report which need to be minimized to become an efficient leader.
