The report helps in analysing and identifying the internship program that has been done by me at Melbourne Marriot Hotel that is situated in Melbourne. The type of the internship that has been chosen for the report is for the Human Resource department. The entire report will help in analysing the description of the business along with understanding the core business activities of the company named Melbourne Marriot Hotel that is based in Australia.
Melbourne Marriot Hotel is one of the Australian hotel that is owned by Edward Marriott wherein there are more than 566 hotels in the entire world. It was founded in the year 1957 and the headquarter of the Melbourne Marriot Hotel is based in Maryland, United States of America. Previously, the respective hotel started with two motels in the year 1950 wherein the services provided by them was liked by the customers and this helped them in focusing more higher and started their hotel that is successfully running in more than 60 countries in an effectual manner (Hotel, 2018).
The core business of Melbourne Marriot Hotel has been categorized in the following manner:
- The respective hotel brings the complementary fields of expertise into play as this will help them in ensuring long term expansion. The Melbourne Marriot Hotel has attracted the customers by providing them convenience in an effectual manner [1]
- The Melbourne Marriot Hotel has been looking for different kind of properties for investment with yields that is good in overseas as this will build stream for different kind of recurring income [2]
Melbourne Marriot Hotel is located in Melbourne, Australia and it is the headquarter of Melbourne. The respective hotel is situated in Exhibition St & Lonsdale St, Melbourne VIC 3000, Australia wherein it offers their customers different kind of deals, experiences and timeshare offers that has helped them in increasing their market share in an effective manner. Different kind of meetings and conferences are conducted in the hotel wherein this has helped them in attracting large customers base in their hotel as well.

As per the diagram, it can be analysed that in the Human Resource Department of the Melbourne Marriot Hotel comprises of the compensation, recruitment along with workplace safety departments wherein there were many employees who were working under the Human Resource Department wherein this helped in choosing different applicants of various candidates. The Hr department of Melbourne Marriot Hotel helped in handling the different planning of the strategy for the company in an effective manner[3].
The supervisor in the department of HR are engaged in analysing the performance of employees in the supermarket. The supervisor tries to implement different kind of performance management tools wherein it will help in overseeing the different tasks performed by the employees and track their performance in an effectual manner[4].
Core Business Activities
I am working in Melbourne Marriot Hotel as the intern in the HR department wherein I tried to gain knowledge mainly on the recruitment and selection of the candidates. I am completing my internship in the HR department for the post of the HR intern and I am trying to handle the different kind of performance management appraisals of the employees and other blue collared staffs who were working under Melbourne Marriot Hotel in Australia. I have to report to the assistant manager of the company wherein I tried to focus on the different theories and models used in the performance management of the different employees.
I am provided with an accurate orientation program wherein I was introduced with the different team members and the assistant manager of the HR team as well. I tried to recognize my managers and my fellow colleagues with their names. The experience working with the entire HR team in Melbourne Marriot Hotel is interesting and I came to know about the different tasks and other programs that were performed by the individuals in an effectual manner.
Mr. A is my immediate boss who has helped me in handling different issues that has been faced by me. The immediate colleagues who were senior to me as per post were MR. X, Mr. M and Mr. K. With the help of the diagram, it can help in analysis of the names of the different individuals who worked with me and made my work easier in nature as well.
In Melbourne Marriot Hotel, the organizational culture contributed towards the social along with psychological environment of the entire organization. In the respective organization, I have found that they incorporate the family friendly values for their customers in an effectual manner. The Melbourne Marriot Hotel has implemented the employee friendly environment and they were customer centric in nature. The Melbourne Marriot Hotel is one of the good examples of hotel that has a strong culture and clear kind of ideology that has helped them in gaining and attracting customers towards their stay in the hotel[5].
For instance- While working as an intern in Melbourne Marriot Hotel, I have seen that there were different instances wherein I found in the HR department, there was employee who was working under my supervisor. The respective individual of the team was performing well and my supervisor promoted him to the on the job training program wherein he performed his best and delivered the best kind of services in the organization.
HR Department
With the help of such organizational culture and with evolvement of such resources in the organization along with investing resources as well[6]. The functional kind of organizational structure helps in investing much resources and thus it helped me in understanding that all the employees are valued in the organization with the analysis and implementation of the long-term strategies.
However, I have faced different kinds of issues related to intercultural gaps between me and a customer who was the guest in the Melbourne Marriot Hotel. I tried to understand the problems that has been faced by him, however I was unable to understand and I lost my temper. During such time, my assistant supervisor came up to me and tried to handle the situation in an effectual manner. My assistant supervisor tried to handle the situation wherein I tried to handle the situation effectively. From these kind of experiences, I tried to learn different organizational culture that has helped me in learning to handle situations effectively.
After such incidents that I have encountered in Melbourne Marriot Hotel, I tried to handle the situations in a more effectual manner wherein I tried to fit in the respective hotel with acknowledging the different kind of situations. The main aim and purpose of the report is to identify the organizational culture of Melbourne Marriot Hotel wherein this will help in analysing the kind of structure of division along with the different role of the supervisors in the respective company as well. The different opportunities of training and development has to be implemented in the report that will help in understanding the different kind of issues that is related to the communication and intercultural issues within the entire organization as well.
There were different kind of Human Resource related tasks that were undertaken by me wherein I tried to learn different HR activities and other compensation programs that was required in the respective Melbourne Marriot Hotel. As a intern, I tried to understand and gain knowledge on different kind of contracts and legislations included in HR practices and activities. The skills that has been acquired by me were as follows:
- I tried to perform multitasking wherein I performed different activities on a single day such as recruiting candidates for the HR department and this helped me in taking care of the compensation and salary policies and procedures as well
- Secondly, the I tried to deal with different kind of contracts and other HR policies and regulations such as different acts that has been implemented in the organization that will help in providing employees different kind of health safety in an effectual manner
- Lastly, I tried to focus more on the achieving the different objectives related to the HR norms and regulations regarding leave policy wherein it has helped me in achieving the different kind objectives effectually
However, I think I need to develop and acquire skills as to improve the competencies and this will help me in performing the activities in an effective manner. During the process of doing the different tasks, it has been seen that I have the ability to perform multi-tasking, however I need to focus more on organizing the different tasks and proper communication is essential in nature as this will help me in succeeding in the future.
Supervisors in the HR Department
As an intern, I am provided with different kinds of training that has helped me in gaining knowledge in discipline and technical skills. I received formal training in analysing the technical skills wherein I gained knowledge on different kind of safety, quality and discrimination laws in the organization. Furthermore, I was provided with informal training wherein my assistant supervisor tried to provide me examples of different incidents in the hotel wherein there were no such policies previously and it created chaos in providing the different kind of salaries and while providing different kind of benefits to the employees as well[7].
For instance- There was an instance and the activity in the organization wherein I participated and it helped me in increasing my knowledge and skills for the respective role of HR as an intern. I came across with an employee of Melbourne Marriot Hotel, wherein I provide payslip to the employees for a particular month. However, later the employee complained that he did not receive any incentive for performing well in the last month. In this particular phase, my assistant supervisor assisted me and helped me in understanding the entire components that is required to be included in the payslip. Through this technique, I tried to gain knowledge on different kind of components that is required to be added and included in the payslip and this helped me in gaining knowledge as well.
During my learning in University, I tried to link the different theories, models and policies of HR with the internship program in Melbourne Marriot Hotel. I have found different kind of similarities in the implementation of the HR rules and regulations in an effectual manner[8].
I tried to gain different kind of contents during the internship program such as training and development program along with implementation of the different kind of laws and policies as well. According to me, I found the training and development program in an effective manner wherein I tried to learn different theories and models’ practical usage in the respective hotel in an effectual manner.
During my internship program that was done by me at Melbourne Marriott Hotel, I am working as an intern under the Human Resource Department wherein I performed different kind of training and development activities along with handling the compensation that is paid to the employees in the organization as well. The seven attributes that I have learnt during my graduation has helped me in the following manner:
- I have gained confidence wherein I tried to solve the different kind of difficulties effectually
- Secondly, I tried to showcase my creativity and innovative procedures in an effective manner wherein this helped me during my internship period
- My accountability and integrity helped me in understanding the different functions of different departments in the Marriott hotel as this assisted me in solving them effectually
- The resilience along with critical reflection has assisted me in understanding the issues and solving them appropriately
Internship Program for HR
During the internship training program, the best part was the culture and the employees who were working in the respective hotel. The atmosphere of the organization was friendly in nature wherein it provided me the scope to place my views regarding different kind of tasks that was performed by me. The colleagues who worked with me during that specific time were cooperative and they helped me in different tasks that were performed by me.
When I joined the company on the first day, there was a small orientation program wherein HR provided me with employee handbook wherein all the consent and the policies were included that has to be followed by us. The administration department of the hotel was systematic in nature wherein the performance of the employees was properly taken care and it helped the company to reach great heights. The organizational structure of the entire company along with the HR department specifically was systematic wherein the employees can reach to the higher authorities and the grievances of the employees were given importance and solved them in an effective manner as well. I enjoyed working at Melbourne Marriott Hotel wherein I enjoyed the training that was provided to me to a huge extent.
During my internship program, I learnt different kind of aspects related to the training, compensation and leave policies that are included in the organization. I learnt the recruitment of different suitable candidates and orientation program was helpful as this provided me with an overall brief about the tasks that was required to be performed by me. The experience gained during the program helped me in sharpening my technical skills and knowledge and I even gained knowledge on different new techniques and models of distribution of the payslips with the inclusion of different kind of policies and incentives in a practical manner.
The internship at Melbourne Marriott Hotel was interesting and it helped me in honing my skills in professional field as well. I tried to develop different kind of attributes such as time management and train myself as to be self-disciplined in performing different kind of tasks in the organization. I found different kind of similarities in the internship program as the different concepts and theories of HR learnt by me in my University has helped me in implementing the same in practical field.
During the entire internship program done by me at Marriott Hotel based in Melbourne, I tried to perform different tasks in an effectual manner. I received compliments for recruiting the suitable candidates and I was successful in fixing the interview for the candidate as well. My assistant supervisor has complimented me and he was proud of me as well[9]. However, when I generated the payslip for the different employees in the organization, I committed a small mistake wherein I did not include the incentive that would have been provided to the employees. I distributed the payslip to the employees wherein I missed out the particulars and this created huge chaos among the employees in the organization as well. My assistant supervisor was upset with my performance and he did not criticize me, however he guided me and made me understood the different qualities that is required to be involved in an employee.
Organizational Culture
When I was applauded for the recruitment of the candidate in a successful manner, I tried to perform well in the next activities as well as this helped me in providing with motivation to perform tasks effectively and gain more applauses in the future. When I committed mistakes in the payslips of the employees, I tried to focus more on the different kind of issues that were highlighted and I took the guidance of the supervisor as a lesson wherein I learnt the different kind of techniques to solve such issues in an effectual manner. I could have never dealt with the particular situation in a better manner as the suggestions provided by my assistant supervisor.
Furthermore, I did not face any kind of challenges in the organization, however I was tensed on the first few days as there were different tasks that were not performed in an effectual manner as I did not possess the required knowledge in an effectual manner. I was prominent in the team work that was performed by the other employees wherein I tried to focus more on analysing different skills and gained knowledge as well. I feel these are the different kind of issues that can occur in future and I need to prepare myself in an effectual manner wherein I can solve the issues effectually. In the future, I will prepare myself with the knowledge and skills I have gained during the internship program in Melbourne Marriott Hotel.
According to me, I feel I have made a huge difference in the respective organization named Melbourne Marriott Hotel. During my internship program, I tried to provide my best to the company wherein I performed the tasks without much issues I did not make any kind of excuses. When I tried to perform different kind of new activities, I committed different mistakes, however there were times when I failed in performing the same, I did not lose hope and I performed them till I completed the tasks in a successful manner. I faced different kind of cultural differences with my colleagues in workplace wherein I handled it effectively as I tried to understood the viewpoints of employees in a successful manner and solved the issues in an effectual manner.
As per me, I did not manipulate or discriminate anyone in the workplace and this was applauded by my supervisor as well. I tried to communicate with the colleagues with proper and effective skills wherein I provided importance to viewpoints of all members and performed the tasks effectively. I feel that I have contributed a lot towards the success of the tasks that were performed by me during the internship program in Melbourne Marriott Hotel. I tried to perform the different tasks such as preparing and generating payslips in an effectual manner as this provided me with scope to deal with such situations in the near future as well.
Reflections on Internship Program
There are different kind of interesting aspects of the placement that was done by me in Melbourne Marriott Hotel. If I will be getting placed in the same hotel, there will be lot of scope to showcase my talent in the future. I have the idea of the culture of the organization wherein it provides friendly culture to the employees who work in the organization. I gained huge knowledge on the different tasks that is performed by me during my internship and this will help me in understanding the tasks in much more easier manner.
However, there are different challenges in respect to the placement in Melbourne Marriott Hotel wherein there are issues related to the leave as there is huge work pressure. The office timing is the other issue that is challenging in nature wherein it can affect my health in taking so much pressure in performing the tasks in the office.
There are different highlights in the work experience as I tried to learn different kind of techniques that will help in handling different kind of issues and tried to solve them practically with the help of on the job training and experience. The main highlights in the internship program was I learnt to prepare pay slips for the employees along with recruiting candidates in the organization. I enjoyed working in the Melbourne Marriott Hotel as the culture was friendly and the colleagues were helpful and tried to help me in different aspects as well.
After the entire completion of the internship program, I learnt a lot of different new and interesting aspects that has helped me in managing the different situations and solve the issues efficiently. The internship program has helped me in changing the career direction as this helped me in performing the tasks practically and I learnt different kind of HR related tasks effectually. I tried to solve issues related to compensation and learnt different HR compensation and equality laws that has made me more innovative in nature and this has helped me in understanding and tackling the situations in an effectual manner.
