Robert Louis Stevenson was a Scottish novelist, short story writer, and essayist who was born on November 13, 1850 in Edinburgh, Scotland. Stevenson’s father was a successful lighthouse engineer, and his mother came from a wealthy family. Stevenson was educated at the Edinburgh Academy and the University of Edinburgh. He became a lawyer, but he was not interested in the law and instead began to write fiction. His first published work was “An Inland Voyage” (1878), a travel book about a canoe trip he took through France and Belgium. Stevenson’s first novel, “Treasure Island” (1883), was a huge success and made him famous. He went on to write many other novels, including “The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde” (1886), “Kidnapped” (1886), and “The Master of Ballantrae” (1889). Stevenson also wrote several essays on literary and social topics. He died of a brain hemorrhage on December 3, 1894, at the age of 44.
