A thirteen year old with concerns and fears for her future has dream to make a difference, not just for her, but for everyone. She dreams that everyone will be able to experience the life she has, but mostly she dreams for change. Severn Cullis Suzuki is one of the worlds most remarkable youth environmental activist who back in 1992 raised money with some school mates to attend the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro at just 12 years old, where she received a standing ovation for a speech to the delegates.
Her speech was a feeling reprimand and appealed to everyone to help stop the destruction of the Earth’s Resources. For Instance Suzuki says ‘ I am here to speak for all generations to come. I am here to speak on behalf of the starving children around the world whose cries go unheard. I am here to speak for the countless animals dying across this planet because they have nowhere left to go.
‘ This small fragment of her speech shows us just how much emotive language and intensity she put into her speech.
Through her voice and words, Suzuki was able to accurately convey her deepest fears not just for her future, but for everyones. This is seen through her use of anaphora, I am here to speak for’. By using the repeated phrase, I am here to speak for’ Suzuki was able to accurately convey just how many people the destruction and poverty affects and who she is trying to help by her concerns.
Suzuki is also being the voice for the people who don’t have a voice or the chance to make a difference. Through the frequent use of I am here to speak for’ allows her to accurately convey just how many people and animals the environmental destruction affects and enables not just the United Nations but people around the world to wake up and see just how destructed and damaged the world and its environment is.
