Execution
In this report, the focus is given on the activities of the Mark and Spencer. In the first phase of the report, the discussion is made about the strength and weakness possessed by the company. In the second phase of the report, the discussion is made on the influencing factor of the company like leadership, corporate culture, and governance in the Marks and Spencer.
By considering the concentrated power of management level in the company, as discussed in the case study that the position of CEO and chairperson is taken into consideration by one man only and it brings the company to give focus on the bottom management methods. The orders are given by the managers or the top level management and the employees of the organization try to execute the order in an effective manner. The decisions that are made are executed in an efficient manner and also with the proper dedication of the employees. The new strategies that are implemented enhance the profitability and also productivity level of the organization.
Marks and Spencer give focus on managing the proper relations with the UK based suppliers so that the products can be manufactured according to the specification and also it enhances the good image of the product in the market when the company offers quality products then customers are also attracted towards it.
By having proper segmentation Marks and Spencer offers a variety of products to the consumers. By giving focus on the operation strategy it is analyzed that the resources could be efficiently invested in a clear direction and also the customer base can be enhanced in an effective manner (Ahmed, 2016).
The strength of the company is that it is one of the renowned brands in the market. Marks and Spencer is well known by the customers and also offers quality products with more penetration in the market (Epstein and Buhovac, 2014).
The Company gives proper treatment to the employees who are working in the organization. It gives enhancement in satisfaction and motivation level of the employees. If the employees avail proper response from the top management, then it not only helps to enhance the level of productivity but also company can accomplish goals and objectives in a proper manner (Tourish, 2014).
It is one of the huge risks for the company. If less strategies are discussed and views are given that can give effect to the decision making the process of the company. If the proper decisions are not made then it can give negative impact on the image of the company. To make the decision poor will give effect to the sustainability and profitability also.
The weakness of the company is that there is no proper communication between the management and the top level. It is analyzed that if feedback is not given from the employees to the top management, then it can give effect on the activities conducted by the employees of the organization (Turró et al., 2014).
The Company does not have the capability to change according to the business environment. The company does not offer customer loyalty to the customers in a proper manner (Jin and Cedrola, 2016).
Quality of products
There is high competition level in the market. To survive in the market the company has to take into consideration effective strategies so that growth and profitability can be attained.
Mark and Spencer do not give focus on enhancing the online presence. Nowadays the consumers are engaged more on the social platform, so it is essential that the company should take into consideration proper strategies to enhance the online market. Then only the company will be able to enhance the sales and profitability (Antonakis and Day, 2017).
- By having a good reputation in the market the company can easily enhance the sales in the market.
- Also, it is evaluated that company has quality products that attract customers towards the products.
- Clear segmentation: By having proper segmentation the company can easily conduct the activities in a smooth manner.

It creates a better working environment and also safeguards the company from loss of talent. The company can retain the customers and also by this the organization enhances the working pattern of the employees in a proper manner.
Weakness
- Concentrated power: The internal environment of the company is also affected and it creates a negative working ambiance in which the employees are conducting their day to day activities.
- Lack of communication: Also, feedback from the employees is considered as the resource that analyzes the status of the company. If the performance of the company is not considered and also various strategies are not discussed with the employees then it is difficult for the company to achieve goals and objectives.
- Lack of flexibility: This has given less effect on the competitive advantage of the organization. To manage the operations of the organization it is important to have proper communication between the employees and top management.
- Due to high competition level, the company should adopt proper strategies so that the goals and objectives can be attained. Examples are: Just because of the high competition level the company is giving focusing to enhance the activities of the organization, so the company is emphasizing on the efficient candidates.
- Weak online presence: They have a weak presence in the market that gives impact on the sales and profitability of the organization.
Leadership is considered as an important aspect that helps the organization to survive in the competitive environment in an effective manner. By having proper leadership in the organization the company can conduct the activities in a proper manner. It is very important for the organization to direct the activities according to the needs and requirements of the consumers. The company should give focus on enhancing the leadership in the organization so that the goals and objectives can be accomplished (Bolman and Deal, 2017). It is essential to give focus on the managing leadership styles so that the company can easily conduct the operations of the organization. There are various kinds of leadership like the first one is autocratic in which the decisions are taken by the leaders only. The top management decisions are not taken into consideration by the company (Goleman et al., 2013). In Consultative leadership, the decisions are made by the managers and the opinions are also considered at the time of making proper decisions for the organization. Next is democratic leadership style that gives focus to the team. All the decisions are taken into consideration by the team. If the team does not make proper decisions then it can directly impact on the working pattern of the company (Daft, 2014).
By taking into consideration Marks and Spencer it is analyzed that the company started its business that gives focus on the concept of family business. The company changes the leadership style by analyzing the problem of underperformance (Welford, 2016).By taking into consideration the strategy of Vandevelde’s.It is evaluated that Marks and Spencer have given emphasis on the operating concept and also offered good quality services to the consumers so that the strength of the company can be maintained. The strategy on which focus is given is related to the consultative leadership styles in which all the decisions are made by the leaders but the opinion given by the employees are also considered at the time of making final decisions. The company also considered teamwork for conducting the day to day activities of the organization and also to accomplish the goals and objective in a proper manner (Ormond, 2015).
So, it is seen that the concept of managing the activities is concerned with the method of consultative and the method is considered by the company to direct the employees of the organization. For example: The autocratic leadership style should be considered to enhance the efficiency and also the production level of the company. If the information is given to the employees to conduct the activities, then it can easy for the company to conduct the activities in less time and also with efficiency. Mark and Spencer take into consideration effective approaches that can help the company to survive in the competitive environment (Ward, 2016.).
Clear segmentation in the marketing
Corporate culture is considered as the behavior, beliefs and attitude between the employee of the organization and the management so that there is direct impact and ease in the decision making process which is beneficial for the organization. It has direct impact on the internal environment of the firm. If an organization lacks in the area of proper and efficient corporate culture then the decline can be seen directly on the performance, day to day activities and processes of the organization. An organization with an apt culture has more chances of growth and presence in the market as the employees are solely responsible in enhancing the performance of the organization and with and efficient corporate culture, the employees will be more motivated to contribute their fullest for their own growth and for the organization as well. The culture of organization also focuses on manager’s decision making process (Guiso et al., 2015).
If the decision taken by the manager is in the right direction and comply with the enhancement of the organization, then the profitability of the organization will be increased at tremendous rate. The decision making can only be improved if the culture of the organization motivates each employee, Ordinates, Sub-ordinates to present their views and beliefs in front of each other without any hesitation or pressure. Each and every organization faces problems and situations where decision making becomes the key factor in deciding the growth of the organization. These problems and situations are different in each organization and are handled differently. The corporate culture is the key which compose the difference between these organizations. It is essential to take corrective steps, so that the organization can conduct the activities in proper manner without any interference.
If we talk about corporate governance, it is majorly affected by the variation in corporate culture. Taking the example of starting stage of marks and Spencer, the theory of family business is that the members involved in the business merely belong to the same family itself. The order which is given is from top to bottom and the firm also considers the communication methodologies. We can analyze that, in the early days the corporate governance for marks and Spencer was totally based on fast turnover. The brand value of the company can only be improved when we implement proper and efficient activities with utmost care. This corporate culture not only demotivates an employee but also they will not be eager to rise to the top of the organization as they are not in the family. By paternalistic culture approach, a proper execution process is implemented and the process will be more easy and simplified (Armstrong et al., 2015).
In the late 90’s, the company will see the growth prevailing in the corporates and also it will be limited to a family level. Talking about the presence of marks and Spencer, the organization was in the top charts and it started conducting its activities and methods with the concept of family ( Tricker, 2015). The setbacks were due to the two reasons that were, the culture and the need of leadership which led to the underperformance of the firm. If the company focused more then there is also a bright side to the culture of marks and Spencer, as the company has a strategy which is very well planned and also there is clear segmentation for the customer group. One of the important strategies which have its impact on the activities and process of marks and Spencer is the Stuart Rose’s strategy (Fox et al., 2016).
Reputation
The organization culture is more simplified and the old values are brought back which has again put the marks and Spencer back into the game. The corporate culture of marks and Spencer has improved the customer-driven culture which is merely based on original quality insurance and it has enhanced the customer value. By taking into consideration, the external and the internal aspect, the customer-driven culture has improved the effort to improve the relationship with the customers and also the market research (Northouse, 2015).
When we focus more on the internal and the external aspect then we can analyze that the activities are conducted in an effective manner, if and only if we are more focused on the above aspects. The responsibility to govern and proper training for the staff is also improved. If quality training is provided to the employees of the organization, then it becomes easy for the organization to accomplish its goals and objectives timely and in an efficient manner. By proper implementation of the strategy, the customer relationship is also improved which in the end is beneficial for the organization itself (McCahery et al., 2016).
It is very important that proper strategy is implemented so that the organizational activities and processes are conducted efficiently without any lag and there should not be any negative impact on the employees of the organization and the organization itself. Management should also ensure that proper activities are conducted timely and properly as they play an important role. If an organization is having an efficient and proper management, then enhanced results can be directly seen on the day to day activities of the organization (Denis, 2016).
To conclude the whole, it can be rightly said that the customer-driven culture will not only increase the presence and the image of marks and Spencer but will also help the organization to evolve with the market. The customer-driven culture is suitable to manage the day to day activities and also the internal governance for marks and Spencer. It is helpful for the smooth operation of the organization not just because of the consultative approach but it also helps the manager to communicate his views and opinions internally without any hesitation. A proper flow of communication between the superiors and the employees is beneficial for the organization as everyone is open to other’s suggestions, views, and opinions which can ignore all the wrong decision coming in the way. The execution of the other two managing style at the right level also improved the efficiency of marks and Spencer (Giroux, 2016).
