This chapter reports the findings of the two surveys that were conducted in big companies of East Tennessee and North Georgia regions among the employers and project managers. It analyses the data that was collected through surveys. It summarizes the result in both text and graphical form for better understanding and easy interpretation. DESCRIPTION OF THE SURVEY Project success is the main requirement in the field of project management. Today there is a growing need of PMP certification or advanced degree courses.
Main purpose of conducting the survey was to get answer to the two questions that follows: 1. Do project managers recognize a need to pursue advanced degrees or PMP® certification in order to advance their careers as project management professionals? 2. To what extent do employers in East Tennessee and North Georgia give hiring preference to applicants for project management positions that have advanced degrees in Project Management and/or PMP® certification? Results of the survey will reveal demand among employers and interest among employees for advanced degrees and PMP certification.
The Survey was conducted in the large companies of East Tennessee and North Georgia regions, among the two groups of people working there. One group was of the project Managers or employees and the other was of employers working there. Participants were provided with printed survey that consists of 7 hypotheses and 5 choices for each. Separate survey was conducted for each group and all the people in the group were made to participate. DESCRIPTION OF THE SAMPLE Hypotheses provided to the employers were: 1.
Our company has employees whose job title is “Project Manager”. 2.
Certified project managers (PMP) are hard to find. 3. We prefer to hire certified project managers over non-certified project managers with similar experience 4. We prefer to hire project managers with college degrees in project management. 5. Project management experience is more desirable than project management certification. 6. A PMP Certification is not important to our company when hiring project managers. 7. Certified project managers (PMP) are paid more than non-certified project managers at our company. Sample survey hypotheses for the group of employees are given below:
1. My job title is “Project Manager”. 2. I would qualify for a pay raise if I had a degree in Project Management. 3. I would qualify for a pay raise if I had a PMP certification from the Project Management Institute. 4. PMP certification is not important in our industry. 5. “Project Manager” is a catch-all job title that really has no meaning. 6. It would be good if I had my PMP certification. 7. Certified project managers (PMP) are paid more than non-certified project managers at our company. Each hypothesis was accomplished by five choices.
The participants were required to choose among one of the five options: strongly agree, agree, don’t know, disagree and strongly disagree. Question 7 5 18 3 6 1 Maximum number of employers agreed to the first hypotheses, though many of also disagree with it. For the second hypotheses, number of employers who didn’t know the answer was quite large as compared to those who were in favor and against. Again in the third hypotheses, employers who were in favor were in majority and those who were in against comprised of small number only.
Results for the fourth hypotheses were same as those for the third hypotheses. Results of fifth hypotheses were opposite to those of the previous ones and there were more people who were against the hypotheses. For the sixth hypotheses, the results were unexpected as there was one to one ratio among the people who agree and disagree. For the last hypotheses, maximum number of employers favors the fact and only a small number disagree with it. Overall, the result is, most of the employers consider PMP certification as the plus point while hiring the managers and offer better pay to them.
