Climate Change and Waste Reduction
Good Fielder is a major geographical company which deals with food products found across New Zealand, Australia and Pacific Asia and it faces different challenges in its implementation of sustainable development goals (Australia, 2012, p. 663). The fact that the company deals with food products, it works in achieving its vision of environment sustainability. Goodman Fielders has policies which all the people working for the company are supposed to follow to ensure the vision of the company is achieved.
There are different sustainable development goals the company gives priority during its operations to ensure safety of the food products produced do not harm the consumers. One of them is about climate change where the company is aimed at ensuring it fights in all ways to combat climate changes during production of the food products. Good Fielder ensures there is reduction of waste products released to prevent pollution of the environment which is a main cause of climate change in many countries across the world (ZHANG, SHIKANG, and YUEHUA, 2014, p. 23). The company works to ensure it reduces waste which ends up in water bodies and if not controlled can cause water pollution as well as air pollution due to the emission of gases from the company. It becomes a challenge to the company to find ways of reducing the wastes generated during production processes but tries its level best to minimise to reduce pollution. Therefore, waste reduction has been given priority by the company in ensuring sustainable environment is maintained which is one of the sustainable development goals.
Goodman Fielder is aimed to reduce the amount of water consumption the company uses in the production to promote good management water and sanitation to all people which is a sustainable development goal. All the people are entitled to clean water free from contamination and available hence the company tries to ensure the water usages are minimized. This will help in achieving and promoting the water available for the people to use in their daily activities (Fernie, 2014, p. 173). It becomes a challenge to the company given the fact it deals with food products which need to be thoroughly washed and cleaned to ensure safety and good health of the product consumers. The company therefore tries to reduce the amount of water used to ensure people around the company also get clean available water at all times.
Affordable, dependable and sustainable energy is another sustainable development goal which Goodman Fielder has given priority to ensure the amount of energy consumed in the company is minimized. The company works to ensure energy levels used in the production process are reduced to enable achieving sustainable energy of all the people. Most companies consumes a lot of energy in their production processes which at times maybe controlled to avoid wastage if no useful operation is taking place (Woodhead, Thomas, and Mah, 2009, p.31). This becomes a challenge to the company as it tries to lower energy consumption levels in its operations. Most of the times the machines used in the production processes may consume more energy but the company has ensured it uses energy saving machines which reduces the energy level and therefore promote in achieving sustainable energy.
Minimizing Water and Energy Consumption
Goodman Fielder has given priority to suitable work conditions of the employees in the company which ensures good and safe working conditions. This is a sustainable development goal which requires employees to be given decent work environment which promotes economic growth of the company and the employees as well. Conducive and safe working conditions promotes the employees to work their level best in production process which leads to high rate of production and finally growth of the company (McGraw, and Dabski, 2010, p. 393). When the company is doing well, the employees are able to have good wages which in return promotes economic growth of the people and the society as a whole. Goodman Fielder therefore ensures the employees are in safe and decent working environment for industrial growth of the company and economic progress of the people and the country. This also helps in achieving the sustainable development goal of ending poverty. When the company makes industrial progress, it employs more people who get jobs and are able to earn living therefore reducing the poverty levels among the people. The company helps in recruiting people who were jobless before thus promoting their living standards and in the long run helps to curb poverty to large number of people.
Goodman Fielder is aimed at ensuring there is responsible production and consumption system which is a sustainable development goal. The company ensures there is sustainability of the food products produced and their usage to enable the development goal is achieved for the people and future generation to enable commodities produced are available to the consumers (Boyle, and McGuirk, 2012, p.397). The goal is aimed at ensuring the products produced by companies are available and can sustain the consumers. Production and consumption structure of the company is aimed to ensure commodities produced are available and consumers are able to get them at any given time they require them in different areas of the world. It is a challenge to the company to maintain sustainable production and consumption system which makes Goodman Fielder to put great efforts in the production sector. High volumes of goods are produced to ensure there are enough products for the consumers to cater their needs.
Goodman Fielder is aimed in providing high quality products which are safe for the health and well-being of the consumers. The company ensures the products produced do not contain any genetically modified foods and are safe for consumption to promote wellbeing of their consumers. The sustainable development goal is aimed to ensure the products produced by companies are health for usage and do not have negative effects towards their bodies for all ages consuming the commodities (D’Cruze, Toole, Mansell, and Schmidt-Burbach, 2014, p.171). Goodman Fielder therefore works and prioritizes the well-being of their customers by ensuring all the food products are safe and do not affect their bodies to cause certain illnesses. It becomes a challenge to the company as it requires high skilled people to ensure high quality food products are produced which will not affect the health of the consumers. These high skilled personnel require high wages which may affect the company and become a challenge if finances are not available.
Providing a Safe and Healthy Work Environment
There are current sustainability foci which the company has given priority to ensure achievement of the sustainable development goals and ensure the food products produced meet consumer requirements. Firstly, safety and health of the products and employees in the company is focused in ensuring the food varieties produced are safe for consumption and do not have negative effects to the bodies of the consumers (Boursier, and Leroux, 2010, p.25). Additionally, the working conditions of the employees working in the company are given priority to ensure there are friendly and conducive conditions which promotes high production. Goodman Fielder ensures and recognizes safety of their consumers to establish and broaden their market of food products. High quality commodities will help market the company in various parts of the world and attract large number of consumers for the products. Employees working in a safe environment will motivate them to give their level best in their line of production which will eventually lead to the company expanding and growing rapidly. Health production is a key factor in achieving sustainability as well safe environment (Le Heron, and Hayward, 2012, p.2241).
Environment is another current focus of the company as it ensures there is sustainability in its production of the food varieties. Goodman Fielder ensures there is reduced water and air pollution from the company for sustainable environment to the people. Most of the industrial wastes are recycled and treated first before being released to minimize pollution (Pinto, and de Villiers, 2012, p. 47). The company has also adapted to usage of renewable sources of energy which are environmentally friendly and have less pollution and effects to the surrounding. Goodman Fielder has taken the responsibility of lowering water and energy consumption in the industry which promotes achieving sustainable environment. Reduction of waste from the company and using packaging methods which are sustainable to the environment is a main focus to the company as it helps in reducing the amount of wastes released from the company to the environment.
Talent growth and leadership in the company is a current focus which has been used to promote the productivity workforce. Employees who are outstanding and performing highly in their duties are rewarded and motivated to work even harder (Shrapnel, 2012, 257). This becomes a motivating tool of the workers as it encourages them to work their level best in their line of production to get rewards like promotion or opportunity to further their studies. The company helps those who may want to continue with studies and expand their knowledge which will lead in high production of the commodities provided.
Promoting Responsible Production and Consumption
Goodman Fielder has focused on the well-being of the community in helping the people around to develop and promote their living standards. The company has established nutrition and health programs to help the community in improving their lives and ensure they get quality food products which are nutritious and free from genetically modified foods (Cleanthous, Macintosh, and Anderson, 2010, p.134). This has helped the community in the neighbourhood in improving their health since the food they take is safe for their bodies. The company has therefore become a great and useful tool for the community as it has improved and promoted their food choices which have boosted body health of the people required for sustainability.
Ingredients of the food products produced by the company are also a current focus in achieving sustainability goals. Goodman Fielder is aimed in ensuring the items used in production of their commodities are useful and no harmful effects are recorded in the bodies of the consumers (Pritchard, 2009, p.69). The company supports the manufacture and production palm oil which is of great importance to the consumers by ensuring the required documents are obtained. The palm oil products are covered by the relevant authorities to promote quality production of the product and help good health of the consumers. The ingredients used are therefore checked to ensure quality and avoid fake products from being processed which are harmful for consumption (Pritchard, and Rama, 2015, p.231). Goodman Fielder has taken the responsibility of checking the ingredients used in the production are the right and recommended to use for the effective production and consumption of the commodities which helps in promoting health and well-being of the people.
There are various factors which drive Goodman Fielder in managing sustainability of the development goals more effectively which have helped the company achieve more and reach the goals. Firstly, there is employee training which helps in providing knowledge and understanding what is required in the production of the commodities (D’Cruze, Toole, Mansell, and Schmidt-Burbach, 2011, p. 169). Once the workers are trained, they are in a position to provide quality services and improve their working skills which promotes the company in sustainable development. The training helps the employees to acquire more environmental techniques and awareness as well as be technologically updated on the efficient ways of doing their duties in the company eventually driving manage sustainable development required.
Another factor driving sustainable development is critical planning of the operations of the company in a good way which enables different departments work together in achieving the sustainable goals. The strategic planning helps the company to prepare and organize how activities will be performed in accordance with the vision of the company (De Smidt, and Wever, 2013, p.34). This is also boosted by the personnel in the planning committee who are able to examine various opportunities which can be implemented in the design to attaining the sustainable development. There are also reports which are released and help the company in planning and operating the opportunities observed during the planning stage to develop sustainable goals. All these activities help in driving the company achieve the sustainable development goals for the common good of the people and environment at large.
Providing High-Quality Products that are Safe for Consumers’ Health
Waste is a factor which drives the company in sustainable development as it ensures reduction of the bakery wastes produced during the production stage. The company has developed ways through which the various wastes are recycled in the company to avoid pollution and releasing to the environment. There are established sites which are used by the company in reducing the waste to around fifty percent and make it usable again by recycling (Le Heron, 2012, p.100). The wastes sites are also used to treat the waste to ensure the portion released is not polluting the environment thus help in sustainable development. There are other six established critical imperatives used by the company in driving sustainable development which include sanitation and cleaning, performance and safety of the product, relationship of the company and supplier, quality mind set and standards of the company. All these factors help in driving the company to achieve the sustainable development goals.
The current sustainable development goals used by the company are explicitly employed in planning and reporting attaining the vision Goodman Fielder. This is clearly seen in a detailed manner where the company takes initiatives like reduction of water, waste and energy to avoid pollution of the environment (Trevena, Neal, Dunford, and Wu, 2014, p.3811). Waste reduction clearly shows no or little release of industrial by products which end up contaminating water sources and causing air pollution. This is aimed at ensuring the environment is safe and health for the people for good well-being of the community. The good working conditions of the employees provides good working conditions free from diseases and clearly illustrates how the company is explicitly involved in promoting sustainable development goals.
There are many sustainable development goals in the company but three are more relevant. The first one is safety and good health of the employees working in the company and ensuring well-being of their health and safe working conditions. There is also safety of the products by ensuring they are health and no harmful effects to the consumers. The second sustainable development goal is put measures of combating changes in climate by ensuring the waste products released are treated or recycled to prevent pollution of the environment (Clifton, 2009, p.218). The third sustainable development goal is ensure responsible production and consumption of the food products which will promote in reducing hunger to the community. These three sustainable development goals are the most relevant to the company as they will have great impact to the people employed and community at large in ensuring the well-being of their lives. It will also promote the living standards of the community by ensuring safe and healthy environment is maintained.
Promoting Talent Growth and Leadership
Conclusion:
From the analysis it can be noted that there are several viable and innovative strategies the company can use and put in practice in contributing the three sustainable development goals mentioned above. Firstly, use renewable sources of energy to reduce and avoid climate change in the area for the benefit of the community. This will help in combating air pollution due to the gases released from the company and greatly help prevent climate change. Secondly, introduce and encourage of advanced technological methods of production which will help in ensuring high volume of food products are produced. The technological methods are efficient and fast in the production process and even marketing of the products to a big number of consumers. Thirdly, the company should ensure working equipment for the employees are available to encourage good working conditions. Safety tools should be put in place to ensure employees are safe and their health conditions are maintained all the time. The appropriate target in evaluating these strategies should be the young people as it will provide employment opportunities which will help them sustain their living standards and promote economic growth to the community at large.
