Technology keeps advancing every day, and E-books are taking over removing the textbooks from schools. The article “The future of Education: Textbooks vs. eBooks”, mentions all the good things how eBooks can help many, for example how eBooks are cheaper for college students and how they are more convenient in the way college students don’t have to carry the heavy traditional textbooks. Also, we know that as a college student we have a tight budget and purchasing textbooks every semester can be expensive and half of the time we can’t afford it.
It says how some teachers favor this new method because they believe students can perform better by reading with technology since this generation is more used to it. This e-Books are getting very popular that some universities want to apply it to their students; one of them is Northwest Missouri State University. I agree with the decision that MSU is making about e-Books and their students because students would read more and learn more, it’s cheaper for the campus and students, and thirdly students agree they have a positive experience with e-Books.
To begin with, is an easier way for college students to learn faster in a more advance way. Today generation are more used to technology than never before. Who doesn’t have a smartphone on their hands now days? A ten year old carries a more brand new phone than their parents. E-books are not the exception for college student, as students we look for a more affordable way to learn and have enough money to survive college life.
Mention in the article “The future of education”, “many educational institutions have already tested the usability of technology in classrooms, with hopes of offering students a more modern and hands on method for obtaining information”. (Pg. 1 paragraph 5) Hubbard a teacher in MSU says” I’m” I’m convinced that students will read more and they will learn more by using this medium”. He is referring to the e-Books. MSU did a survey where they find out that in this spring students will primarlyprimarily use their laptop ,laptop, compterscomputers, already provided to them by the institution, to read e-books. For the school to make a decision like that they needed to make sure that it is going to be a useful tool.
Secondly, college is very expensive and having e-books would be more economically flexible. To purchase textbooks is expensive and sometimes we don’t use them as much as we should. Textbooks contain a lot of informative information but as much as it contains we don’t always use it. “Perhaps the greatest need in this economic hurdle is for a cheaper option than print textbooks and in the theory the idea of e-Books/ readers is a cheaper route”, mention in the article “The future of Education”. Everyone looks for a better way to stick to college and not having economic problems because it can be tough. MSU is trying to help their students; they mention “while e-books are cheaper, on average available at the half price of the printed version , the university currently replaces renal textbooks on three year cycles—getting three years use of out of a bound of a single bound book”. They also say “but we’ve been very candid with the publishers that we are not going to spend any more money than we’re currently spending and we would expect over tie to spend less”. With this been said MSU is trying to cut expenses if you can say with their books, if their students and them start using the e-Books they are both going to save money. They are trying to tell publishers it would be easier with the e-Books than with the textbooks since many students are going towards them leaving books behind.
Moreover, today generation are more used to work with technology and they can work faster and improve their work better. Some high schools are allowing their students use their for class participation, and colleges applying the e-book wouldn’t be a difference. Our generation is more open to the technology we do everything with it. In the “The Future of Education”, a teacher mentions “students will perform better on text on the computer. This was proven as our average test score this year rose as little less than 10%…” In other words this shows how students perform better with technology in front of them. In MSU they did a research where it show that a very high percentage of students who actually use digital textbooks have a positive experience”. A lot of teachers say that “it’s a sentiment shared among a lot of educators that it’s the 21st century; we should be using computers for all of education”. Many teachers want to use this method because it’s easier and more students are using them.
In conclusion, e-Books are getting more used to it and are taking over the usage of textbooks. With the use of e-books students can learn faster, is cheaper and students seem to work better with technology. Think about it as something less heavier to carry and more cash you going to save, college life sometimes is not that easy as it seems.
