The iPod. It was developed by Apple, the makers of the Mac. It was first shown to the world on late October of 2001. It was first met with criticism and people were skeptical on what this music player from Apple can do and be benefited from. little did people realized that this product would now be a part of our tomes and pop culture as a whole. And that this will start the beginning of a phenomenon that will never change, only to continue to evolve.
The iPod was Apple’s first successful consumer product outside the Mac environment.
Originally people used to listen to music in portable and bulky Walkman cassette or CD players. It was not bulky but also inconvenient because you can insert only one cartridge (a cassette or a CD) for you to listen music on the go. What Apple did was they have a product that can store music downloaded or ripped from CD’s, stored and can be played over and over again.
And it runs on a lithium polymer battery which is rechargeable instead of those AA batteries. One thing that is noticeable on the iPod was it’s user interface. It is different from other players as it was a scroll type design.
It was designed to make the menu process much more simpler ans easier to use and navigate upon. It has a larger screen display that shows more than the number of the song but the title and artist name as well. And it can store lots of songs in a 5 GB memory.
Later on the middle of 2002, Apple created a utility drive that would make iPod work for those using a PC, thereby making it compatible and easy to synchronize the iPod to the PC. And later that year “limited edition” iPods would be should in time for the Christmas buying spree. These iPods feature different artists with their logos or signatures.
It was also that year that the scroll in the iPod interface would evolve. The spinning scroll would be replaced by a scroll similar to those being used in laptop notebooks. There are many versions of the iPod, dubbed as 1st generation, 2nd generation and so on. It is now on its 5th generation and has continually evolved. There are now iPods that can play video, show pictures, have smaller version of the iPod, and now an iPod Touch player. The iPod still does trail blaze on how music players are supposed to be and create an impact each and every time.
The iPod replaced the walk primary as the portable music device of choice. It also marked the beginning of the end for the life of cassette players and its tapes. It also made portable CD players almost extinct. It made replacing CD after CD or cassette after cassette after it was finished playing in the player a thing of the past. It also made paved the way for music to be downloaded from the Internet in digital format and still allow to music to be ripped and burned and stored in the iPod. It made people from all walks who has an iPod cool or hip.
Listening to music has never been easy and personalized to say the least. And people now don’t use those players that are bulky, heavy and which comes with a CD, AM/ FM function and or a cassette function as well. The technology being used by Apple was not new but was inspired by other products like its scroll interface. But the design is. Now you can navigate with one finger picking what function to do. Also another feature which is not new is the screen. Cellphones have screens, so why not music players. But what is unique about it that it can show more detailed information as you scroll.
