Introduction to GDP and sports performance
Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is primary indicator that assists to gauge the health of the country’s economy. GDP is the market value of the final goods and services that is produced by the country in the particular year. It is the key that offers the information about the size of economy and its performance due to which developing countries endeavour to achieve high GDP. The research has been conducted on reasons, which show that countries with high GDP like Norway are underperforming in one of the biggest sport in the world that is football. This has been analysed by the researcher that higher national income is considered as one of the good indicators of success in the sports.
The research will include different reviews upon the role of the high GDP in the performance of the sports activities. There is a strong relationship between sport and economic growth that is possible through high GDP. This strong relationship provides the opportunities to the countries to develop sports with the related activities. The high GDP of the countries like Norway offers a platform to sports like football to expand and to explore the world. Further, the strong economy of the nation brings the development of the nation in terms of the infrastructure, amenities and different facilities that help in improving the sports. Some factors affect performance of football in Norway instead of high GDP of country that are focused in this research. The focus of the subject is majorly on the factors that make the country as underperforming in the one of the biggest sport of Football instead of the fact when a high GDP rate is managed.
The research includes the theory related to the economic concepts that majorly include the GDP and the influence of high and low GDP on the performance of the country towards the sports that majorly include Football. Further, this research includes different concepts related to investment, motivation, gender inequality, and many others.
The problem statement of the concern research topic is the reasons or the factors due to which countries with a high GDP rate like Norway underperform in one of the biggest sport that is football. The major reasons that have been witnessed due to which Norway football remains underperforming include population and wealth matters and dominance in the other sports activities. All these issues are present in the country, gender equality matters, lack of the motivation among the players instead of the fact that different facilities have been offered to sports players, corruption and many other (Huggins, 2017). This has been found that the GDP creates an impact on the performance of sports like football but countries who find the high GDP deals with other issues that affect sports like football.
The relationship between GDP and sports performance
This research is important for the investigators as this contributes in enhancing the knowledge about the reasons or factors due to which countries underperform in football instead of the fact that they are able to manage the high GDP. This research helps in understanding the loopholes due to which the performance of Norway is declining in football and their future aspects. This research is must for countries like Norway where football sports is underperforming. In addition, it helps in analysing the reasons or factors that lead to underperformance in sports. All these factors and their impacts can be reviewed by the countries with the motive to improve the performance of football sports. Thus, the country can follow some strategies to improve the underperformance of Norway sports like football with the rise in GDP of the country.
This research is done on one of the emerging issues that why some of the countries with the high GDP like Norway underperforming in one of the biggest sport in football. The research gap is the in-deep analysis of the research topic.

This chapter includes the analysis and discussion related to the opinions of the different researcher based on the research concern. This section shows the argument and agreement of different researcher on a single topic.
According to Camignani, 2014, GDP is one of the major economic factors that influence the performance of sports and athletes. The researcher found that the countries with the higher per capita GDP deliver the improved equipment as well as the infrastructure, a healthier environment with a school system where the sport is practised and values. In the countries with the low GDP, the promising youth who remains interested in the football might find it more difficult to remain healthy and to attain good training. Further, this has been found that the people who are interested in the sports have to spend the time in work for living effectively which might indicate that they have to do adequate time to be devoted to football (Vorobyev, Solntsev and Osokin, 2017). In addition to this, the remoteness also allows it less probable for them to be observed by international talent scouts. This reflects that the poor countries have no hope of generating an effective team of football players. However, this also shows that an average and a richer country are more expected to generate stronger football teams.
Factors influencing Norway’s underperformance in football
Contradicting this view, Jordon, 2014, exhibits that there are some countries, which are underperforming in sports like football even though they are maintaining a high GDP rate. The high GDP of the country supports the improvement of infrastructure, education and other facilities, which provide opportunities to the young to get, indulge in the football. Some of the countries who with the high GDP include Italy, Brazil, Argentina, Spain, Germany, Portugal, Netherlands and many others (Statistics Times, 2019). Further, this has been found that these countries have witnessed a good position in sports as they have improved GDP. Contrasting this statement, Bhuyan, 2016, stated that countries like Brazil and Germany are struggling in sports like football. The nature of their performance that has been researched in the past few years in world cup reflects the same. Germany and Brazil, in particular, looked pedestrian, complacently knocking the ball, and lacking the invention. Most of the players of countries like Portugal, Uruguay, and Spain are underperforming and struggling in winning in the world cup because of their personal issues that include being heavyweights (Koubek, 2018). This internal issue is witnessed by the players who are playing the game and affecting their performance in the competition with the other countries.
According to the Haugaasen and Jordet, 2012, favouritism in the selection and continuing the selection of players is considered as one of major reason due to which players of the high GDP countries underperform. In most of the countries, the selection of the players in sports matters a lot because they are one who is going to perform with the name of countries. This is the reason due to which they select those players who can get success for the country. However, the research reflects that rise in corruption and bribery is leading politics due to which the issue related to the favouritism in the selection of players arise. This favouritism affects the youth players who genuinely have capabilities and skills better than the person who has been selected by the management for the national team of football. Thus, this affects the performance of the country’s football instead of the fact that they have a high GDP.
According to the Madsen, et al 2018, every country finds its importance that economic resources that are must boost the resources to improve the health outcomes, and for the investment in the long-term training and infrastructure. However, the researcher said that high GDP brings high wealth but this cannot bring the medals that show that underperformance in the football sports might include different reasons that are not linked with the GDP of the country. Agreeing to same, the Purdy, 2017 shared the opinion about high GDP is not the only reason behind the excellent performance. One of the leading reasons that affect the performance of the football players includes pooling of talent from the large population of the country. The current population of Norway is approx. 5,383,066 based on the data of the United Nations on 15th February 2019. The population of Norway is equivalent to 0.07% of the total world population (Worldometers, 2019). This shows that population is one of the reason due to which the country is not able to source the effective players for their football team and this affects the country performance in football.
Analysis and discussion of different researcher opinions on the topic
Agreeing to same, another Rosas and Flegl, 2019 exhibits says that Norway is lacking in terms of the population due to which they are not able to source the talented players for them. This can easily be compared with the other countries that include Germany, Sweden, Russia, China, and many other countries that are able to maintain effective wealth. This can be evidenced that the current population of Brazil is 211,821,153 according to the data recorded on 15th February 2019 based on the latest United Nations estimates (Worldometers, 2019). The population of Brazil remains equal to approximately 2.75% of the total world population. Thus, this shows that the country has effective wealth that helps them in polling the right talent for their football teams. In the end, this is a fact that research conducted proves the fact that Norway is lacking in polling the talent because of the population.
Contradicting this, Strittmatter and Skirstad, 2017 said that there are different reasons due to which Norway is underperforming instead of the fact that they have high GDP. One of the reasons that have been witnessed by the researcher is dominance in the few sports by Norway. The country has dominance in the winter sports that majorly include the sports of skiing, sprint and many others (Strittmatter and Skirstad, 2017). The dominance of the other sports in Norway is affecting the young people interest in football, as they are willing to adopt more of the winter sports that help them to be successful. However, the dominance of winter sports is one of the reason due to which young people underperform in sports irrespective of the rise in the GDP of the country.
Agreeing to this, the Cherwa, 2018 presented the view in which they said that football sports are underperforming because of the decrease in the number of participants in football. Along with this, this has been witnessed that the interest of young people is more in winter sports rather than football. This shows the dominance of the sports over the football, this has been found in the research that Norway is the country whose population is approximately1/60 of the United States but with the lot more reindeer has won, more of the awards in the Winter Olympics medal that US 329 to 282 entering this Olympics. Along with this, Norway was even leading the U.S. favouring the sum of the total medal count with a number of 11. This has been found that out of 11, six of the medals were captured by Norway in cross-country skiing. Moreover, in the research, this has been found that Norwegians have won approximately 113 cross-country medals through the different years that are most of any of the sport (Cherwa, 2018).
Possible reasons for underperformance despite high GDP
In addition to this, Hedenborg and Norberg, 2018, said that Norway is a country with endless ski locations and huge media coverage of events. This is one of the reasons due to which young people takes interest in winter sports more comparing it with the other countries. Moreover, the country is able to manage these locations and media coverage because of the high GDP of the nation. However, this also shows that more investment in winter sports affects the country’s interest in investing the amount in enhancing other sports like football. In addition to this, the research reflects that the country is more interested in investing the winter sports (MacDougall, MacDougall and Sale, 2014). This leads to one of the major reason due to which the country Football team generally underperform with the fact that the country is able to maintain high GDP.
Considering the view of Berglund, 2018, it is far from the first time that the sport’s bosses in Norway have been called arrogant and too powerful. In football sports, the men’s have been lurching from the crisis to crisis for the years, which gets associated with the change in culture among the managers and players. This has been found that the NFF sponsors are complaining about the huge gap that arises between the money that is spent on men’s football comparing it with the women’s football (Berglund, 2018). This shows that gender inequality is one of the issues that affect the performance of the football sport in Norway. The gender inequality makes women not to take active participation in the football sport because the country considers the gap between men and women’s.
Agreeing to this, Frangoudes and Gerrard, 2019, exhibits that gender inequality is one of the major factors due to which the participation of the members in football get affected with the fact that country is able to manage high GDP. Norway is underperforming in sports because of gender inequality that the crisis faced by both men and women. In the research, this was also found that many of the men in the national team decided to quit the team. Further, the football followers like Bernhus think that NFF men in charge required saying a lot more that is admitted by them as they have numerous problems and they are willing to fix these problems before they get worse. These problems affect the participation of the sportspersons majorly in football.
Role of population in sports performance
It is essential to recommend some of the strategies that help the countries in enhancing the performance of sport majorly football. This sport is considered as one of the major sports that are essential to be valued and motivated by the country. In addition to this, the performance of the football sport in Norway is getting affected due to several reasons due to which the country should contribute effectively in improving the performance. According to the Lockert, Bjorna, Haugen, and Salomonsen, 2019, the major strategy that can enhance the football sport is the motivation for young people. The young people of Norway should be motivated enough so that they can easily put efforts and take interest in the sports. Agreeing to this another Chroni, Abrahamsen, Skille and Hemmestad, 2019, presented that most of the time while selecting the sports as the career youth consider the investment and support for the government. The support of the government is analysed by young people so that they can see their future in that particular sport. Thus, this shows that the government should motivate the youth in Norway to participate in football as the sport. This participation can be done through the monetary as well as non-monetary terms as it depends on the customers.
Contradicting this, the Barker-Ruchti, 2019, research suggested country to spend more amounts in the training and development of the youth majorly in Football. The effective training and facilities will enhance the sports of football in Norway that is easily possible as the country is able to manage the high GDP rate. This strategy will reduce the problem of pooling of the right talent for football sports as this has been found that wealth is less due to pooling get affected. The population of the country need to be more focused on football sports that will help the country in pooling the talent. The lack of interest of the population is also one of the reasons due pooling get affected.
Contradicting this, Lockert, Bjorna, Haugen and Salomonsen, 2019 found that Norway and some countries with the high GDP rate dominate in few sports due to which other sports like football get affected. It is recommended and suggested to the country to maintain equal balance between all the sports. Particularly, Norway should value and invest the amount in Football sports that will help them to enhance their performance. In addition to this, the country should invest and promote the participants in Norway football.
Recommendations for improving Norway’s football performance
It is suggested to Norway to focus on treating every sports member equally without any discrimination between men and women. This discrimination should be reduced so that both men and women can take active participation in football sport in Norway which is the only way through a performance of country can be improved.
