Maintaining Ethics and Avoiding Plagiarism
One of the most important aspects of conducting a research project is maintaining the ethics of academic research and producing a paper that is free of plagiarism. For a researcher to complete the study requires to reference the works of the authors who have analyzed the variable of the topic previously. This gives insight about the topic and makes the research paper more concrete and provides more depth to the analysis. Hence several universities and accredited academic institutions have developed the process of referencing books and articles by the researcher. Annotated bibliography is a referencing process which includes a list of references along with a short summary of the article or the book that has been taken. It was notified that the explanation of the article should be conducted in 8-10 sentences which had given me the idea that the summary is really brief so that the reader can understand the gist of the source and its relevance with the research (Blaug, 2014).
Various online libraries along with Google scholar was used to find references and documents related to the topic, Google scholar is a service provided by Google that works exactly like the search engine, where keywords of the topic was used in order to find references. This process is used in other online libraries as well. During the initial stage of the research the concept of annotated bibliography is new and unnecessary to many. Many feel the process is time consuming and is equivalent to using in-text citation.
There can be four factors based on which the selection of the reference are processed: firstly, the variables that are associated with the topic, secondly the availability of the journal articles or books, thirdly the validity of the source and lastly the understanding that is derived by reading and analyzing the article.
The content of the annotated bibliography should not only be a summary it should also contain evaluation and reflection of the benefits of the source to the research. The prerequisites of writing an annotated bibliography are a critical and analytical reading of the article that is being referred.
The variables that are associated with the topic are job placement, higher education, education system, quality of education in the past decade. In order to determine the reliably of the sources peer reviewed journals, these are the journals that are used by other researcher as well because it ensures that the journal is credible and is effective (Blaug, 2014).
Using Annotated Bibliography in Research
Summarizing the paper
The annotated bibliography that has been prepared for this research is in a paragraph form. The citation of the paper is done in the APA standard as that was mentioned by the instructor before we had begun the process. The Citation of the paper is followed by the summary and the analysis. The reflection portion of the annotated bibliography has been skipped because it would have made the paragraph unnecessarily lengthy and would have repeated information.
- Citation – The source of the journal articles are cited in the APA format. The requirements that are to be met in order to cite the references in APA format are that the reference list should be alphabetically organized and the references should be in hanging style. In this case the references have been listed in a separate document to keep track with the in-text citation while writing the research paper. The process of annotated bibliography has been conducted simultaneously with the addition of the citation to the list. This process has provided assistance in saving time and because it is in a different document it has also helped in maintaining the alphabetical order of the citation as well the hinging style.
- Summary – The content of the article that has been cited is supplied in two or three sentences. A thorough analysis of the paper is required in order to make sure that none of the important information is omitted from the annotated bibliography.Maximum attention has been given to the findings section of the article as it represents a gist of the entire paper including all the variables that are associated with the topic of research. In order to give the study more structure several commonly used phrases in academic writing has been used.
- Evaluation – The annotated bibliography that has been supplied with the paper does not have defined and separate sections of summary and evaluation. The analysis of the paper and its main contents are in the summary. On the other hand, the paragraph is informative and it contains details regarding the topic in a specific and analytical way. It also states the tone of the research and explains how the information has added to the research (Holland, 2013).
Writing an annotated bibliography the process might seem to be a bit tiring as it may be deemed to be an extra step in the research process along with the several other steps. The main limitation of while writing the annotated, however, that the languages that is used by some of the researchers and authors are so technically and filled with jargons that it was difficult to comprehend and make sense of some of the parts in the assignment. One way to overcome this situation developed the habits of immediately searching the meaning of the jargons are keeping a log of the meanings so that it can also be used later as well. The speed of the reading process can also be decreased to understand the flow of writing adopted by the researcher once a person get used to the way of writing understanding the language will not be an issue any more.
Another limitation of writing the annotated bibliography is that it can be sometimes difficult and confusing to understand the information that is important and is to be added and which ones are not important and can be excluded from the summary. To deal with this problem one should focus on the results, findings and the conclusion part of the paper in order to write the summary as the most important aspects of the research paper are included in these subsections of the paper (Lengelle et al., 2013).
New insights gathered
Following is the list of some new information that has been gathered from the annotated bibliography:
The issue of placement is severe in the hospitality sector (Kitterlin-Lynch et al., 2015).
There has been a communication gap in between the higher education institutions and the labor markets. There is a need to build better relationship.
The graduates in the field of agriculture is also facing issues as the perspective of people needs to be changed in order to understand the importance of agriculture and in turn generate placement opportunities in this sector (Lavrukhina, 2012).
Specialization in the field of academics is important for skill development which is imperative in the placement.
It has also been found that the students who are exposed to the industry and are aware of the way the industry works, tend to perform better in their evaluation in the colleges as well.
The courses must be aligned with the requirements of the industry in order to prepare the students for the industry and the students should be aware of the pressure of the industry as well in order to cope with the initial few days of employment
Incorporating annotated bibliography in the research helps in developing an in-depth knowledge base regarding the topic. One of the main benefits of annotated bibliography is that it helps clarify the researchers the steps that are involved in research methodology as the process and the steps included in research can be complicated initially. Annotated bibliography helps in developing the ability to concise the thoughts and put it in limited words (Blaug, 2014).
