Honor. A code of integrity, dignity, and pride. As one of the four pillars described in the movie Dead Poets Society, it can also be described as a pillar for life. With honor comes respect and a closeness with those around you.
Honor can be demonstrated in many ways. I would like to talk about the biblical sense of the word. Honoring thy mother and father as commanded by Jesus in the ten commandments. Its more or less a responsibility regarding a childs respect for their parents.
For the past forty years or so there has been a steady breakdown within the family. There is no greater evidence of the family’s breakdown then when you witness the way children disrespect their parents. In the United States there are at least eight million serious assaults made by children on their parents. This is not to mention the assaults made by children on teachers, fellow-students, and siblings.
In today’s society God’s commandments are often mocked or considered obsolete.
Public schools which once displayed the Ten commandments as the standard by which we are to live have removed them from their walls and have replaced them with a secular approach. One which is corrupting our society more and more every day because of our nations commitment to becoming neutral.
Gods purpose for the Ten commandments were very straight forward. They were to set a moral law to which people can relate to and apply to their lives to develop a functional society where everyone can live together in peace.
Unfortunately that did not, and has not, happened yet.
A perfect example would be the terrorist attacks on the United States on September 11, 2001. In an ideal society with honor and respect, such events wouldnt have even been comprehended. But unfortunately, our societies on this planet are geared towards power and wealth. A deadly combination when put together.
I really think that as an entire body, our world will never come to complete peace. There will always be wars. There will always be innocent lives taken for the sake of becoming more powerful. And thats sad. But its also the truth. That leads me to my next question Why cant we all just get along?
