There are many problems facing the world in today such as a nuclear weapon, a conflict of Middle East area, starvation in Africa and so on. Of course, above problems are also serious but I think that the most serious problem facing the world is an environmental problem and to be specific, I’d say a global warming. Albert Gore states “Global warming will be the greatest environmental challenge in the 21st century.” So what is The global warming? why did Albert Gore states like this? And do we have a solution about this problem? Global warming is a rising average temperature of Earth’s atmosphere and ocean in long term.
Global warming is already known as the greenhouse gases, which are emitted by a human activity, such as urbanization and industrialization. Moreover, August 03, 2009 Sky News announce that a warmer sun could increase global temperatures over the next five years by more than scientists previously predicted. According to the Gareth Fones(Met office, 2009), “Human activities and carbon dioxide emissions will cause warming, but there will also be other factors over short-time scales.
” Therefore, Global warming is progressing from human activities as well as natural factors. The harmful effects of global warming on daily life are showing up around the world.
These problems include increased rainfall and flooding in some regions and increased drought in others. It is a very serious problem in human being and animal habitats. To make matters worse, according to Dr. Neville Nicholls of Geography Science at Monash University, green house gases stay can stay in the atmosphere for an amount of years ranging from decades to hundreds and thousands of years.
It means no matter what we do, global warming is going to have some effects on Earth. Here are key factors affected by increasing of temperature. First, polar ice caps melt. There are 5,773,000 cubic miles of water in ice caps, glaciers, and permanent snow. Sea levels would rise by at least 25 meters by the year 2100. (Time for Change, 2009) It also causes the global ecosystem out of balance. The ice caps are fresh water, and when they melt, they will desalinate the ocean; make it less salty. The desalinization of the gulf current will “screw up” ocean currents, which regulate temperatures.
The stream shutdown or irregularity would cool the area around Western Europe. Moreover, global warming could snowball with the ice caps gone. Ice caps are white, and reflect sunlight, which is reflected back into space. If the ice caps melt, the only reflector is the ocean. Darker colors absorb sunlight, further warming the Earth. (Course book, p.107) Other predicated consequences of global warming are heavier downpours and more frequent and stronger hurricanes, leading to floods. Although some areas of Earth will become wetter due to global warming, other areas will suffer serious droughts and heat waves. So how we can slow down the global warming. Actually, while the harmful effects of global warming is fatal, what we, people, can do is restricted because carbon dioxide emissions could be lessen by government regulation and corporation’s effort. In addition, it needs cooperation of each country but it will take long time because of country’s conflict of interest. Anyway, people can do things to try to slow down global warming. One thing people are doing is carpooling.
Carpooling is driving with someone to a place that you are both going to. This minimizes the amount of greenhouse gases put into the air by a car. Another thing that people are doing is being more careful about leaving things turned on like the television, computer, and the lights. A lot of people are taking time away from the television, and instead, they are spending more time outdoors. This helps our planet out. Now, more people are even riding busses, walking to school, and riding their bikes to lower the amount of greenhouse gases in the air. Planting trees and recycling also helps. If you recycle, less trash goes to the dump, and less trash gets burned. As a result, there are fewer greenhouse gasses in our atmosphere. Global warming is not a small problem. Global warming threatens the world.
The most serious problem facing the world is global warming. Because the harmful effects of global warming is so extensive and intensive as we could see miserable sight in Super Typhoon Haiyan in the central Philippine province of Leyte. we have responsibility to keep the earth health so that we can hand over healthy earth to our offspring. We should be concerned about this problem including other environmental problems.
