· Auto:
The auto is one of the major props that really further emphasise the symbolic meaning of technology. The auto technology have showed us how horrifying ways the technology could use us and control ourselves and that contradicts to the point that we as humans use the technology and the media because we have control over what we are going to post, say, or tweet. But the fact that technology have grown so powerful through out those years have made it more difficult for ourselves to resist and to take our control back from technology itself.
We can see through the climatic scene where auto try to overrides the captain, which in the end the captain successfully switch off auto and go back home to earth.
· Screens:
Another prop that is used heavily is holographic screens. These screens dominates the peoples lives, like what sherry turkle has said, “we sacrifice conversation for mere connection”. We can clearly see that from the scene where there are 2 men talking with each other while the person is literally beside them but prefers to speak through those screens as we can see today.
We rather use our phones, laptops, or i-pads to communicate with the rest of the world instead the one you have next to you, a real person to communicate with. Also knowing fact that these screens is another way that technology and the media can blinds us, by shifting away our focus with our real surroundings to the virtual world. we can see that when wall-e encountered Mary and accidentally broke Mary’s screen and from then on she get to see and realize her surroundings like the pool, which she finally get to enjoy with her significant other, john, found through actual conversation, face to face.
From this scene where we get to see the first human interact with each other, that signifies this is the beginning of changes that is yet to come.
· Trash & plant
From the beginning or at the very end of the movie we get to see these trash pilled up in mountains, but somehow it looks like buildings. It blends with our surroundings effortlessly and that shows how we are so caught up with ourselves and the media, that we build up this complete lack of awareness with our real world and this shows how the media can take away our worries and live inside this virtual world. Knowing the fact that those trash found on earth, pilled up that could manage to reach to the space foreshadows how humans becomes sluggish, prodigal, and dehumanized AS TIME PROGRESSES that we could see later on in the movie.
Another location is the dump in the axiom ship, this location is very dark almost black with all the trashes once again. Wall-e and eve got thrown out by Auto because the fact that they have hope and could bring changes to humanity, it seems like Auto just following instructions but just like what captain said ” the video auto showed was 700 years ago, things change” , which means Auto do this because it doesnt watch changes, Auto still wants power and control, that comes back to the “13th documentary”. Where people like Angela Davis try to make a difference, fix the problem and stand up for themselves they will be put down by force, their opinions thrown into the dump or end up getting killed just like eve and wall-e in this scene. That signifies how technology can easily not only controls us, but also our surroundings, IT IS NOT BY THEIR CHOIVE THAT ARE IN A TRASH PILE, ITS BECQUSE TECHNOLOGY FORCED THEM INTO IT.
Axiom ship: brightly lit blue tones, with adverts all around us, this setting further assists Auto to create this virtual world where they try to distract you from figuring out the real reason why are you in a ship in the first place. This can be seen through the scene where the advertisement says the “blue is the new red”, and from there we see all the people switch their clothes to blue immediately and that shows how powerful the media could be. As i have said previously that through technology we get access to media and even the slightest advertisement could make such a huge impact to ourselves and the community. Not only these adverts is a way auto control humans but also a way to brainwash people that the Axiom is the only home you ever have. The evidence can be shown through the scene where there are these babies on the floating chairs and getting taught the alphabets where the robot says ” A is for Axiom, your home sweet home“. The fact that this ship is packed with adverts everywhere makes this location such a powerful tool that makes the technology and medias job to be easier in terms of keeping humans trapped inside this virtual world.
Colours:
As i said before that the ship is brightly lit with blue tones, and blue symbolizes intelligence and produces a calming effect. This helps makes the environement of the ship peaceful and secure that helps influence the location to make it a more powerful medium to make this paradise where humans are forced to not worry and enjoy. This shows how technology can control what we feel and how we should feel, by using the huge screen of the fake blue sky in the pool area of the ship.
And the colour red, focusing on the red light on Auto, that symbolise power and strength shows that this character Auto is the power source and taking control of everything. Technology have become so powerful that it has fully taken control of the human lives. We can also see that theory in the Buy N Large logo. Lets take red to symbolizes the technology and the power it has while the blue as the humans from where they use blue tracksuits (when they change from red to blue because of the advert). The logo shows that humans have a small significance, while the technology are the larger and surrounds the blue means technology is the one who is controling the the humans. We can also see that in the scene where wall-e have to put the plant to the holo-detector and where the scene shows the blue circle of the logo B&L rise, which means eventhough the blue/humans have small significance, it is the sign of hope because the holo-detector is the only way back home. Another scene that relates to the colour red theory is when they make the caution warning, the warning is also another way technology can makes us vulnerable. Like the topic we discussed on class regarding how the media can create this fear or misconceptions of unnecessary things like the vaccines, qnd with the huge amount of news and warnings technology and the media has control over us other than using advertisements, but also using fear as a method.
