Tomas Rivera was born in 1935 in Crystal City, Texas. He was the first in his family to graduate from high school and go on to college. After earning his B.A. from Southwest Texas State Teachers College, he taught high school for a year before enlisting in the U.S. Army.nRivera served in the Army for two years, during which time he was stationed in Germany. After his discharge, he returned to Texas and earned his M.A. from Texas Western College.
