Evolution of Quality – Historical Perspective
There is no proper definition of the phenomenon about total quality management within any organisation and it is dependent on the way by which people define. However, Total Quality Management or TQM can still be defined as based on a product’s confirmation to its specification, the fitness of its use evaluated by the performance of the product for which it was intended to be manufactured, the value of the price paid on account of its usefulness evaluation the quality of support provided for the product after the seal of the product and the psychological aspect after sale of the product (Ross 2017).
It can also be said that the total quality management is a description of the management approach of an organisation that is defined through the long-term success of the product or services provided by a company through proper customer satisfaction.
For evaluating the total quality management for an organisation based in UK, The Coca Cola Company has been selected for this report (Goetsch and Davis 2014). in this report the total quality management process for the organisation would be followed through a brief introduction of the organisation, identification of the total quality management tool that the organisation currently uses, the successful implementation of the tool and the web are the implementation methods that the organisation implements for the TQM tool, the ability of the organisation to deal with the change, the recommendation provided based on the chosen TQM tool and the reasons why the recommended to load benefit the organisation in going further in future.
A brief introduction of the organisation
The Coca Cola Company was founded in 1886 by pharmacist Dr John S. Pemberton in Atlanta, Georgia. Since then Coca Cola has been providing its customers with various products, specialising in the zone of aerated beverages amongst other products that the company provides to their customers (Jiménez-Jiménez et al. 2015). The most popular among all of the products that the company provides to their customers is the authentic Coca Cola aerated carbonated beverages. It also produces sugar free version of the authentic aerated beverage call diet coke. Coca Cola head since then been developing the products while maintaining the quality and has been innovating its product in every way possible.
It is also introduced a new product called The Coca Cola Zero, which is an innovative twist on the authentic coca cola beverage by producing the most healthy beverage making the company solved as a socially responsible organisation. Other aerated drink that the organisation produces and distributed amongst the entire world is Sprite, Fanta, Powerade and Abbey Well Water (Oakland 2014). Each organisational unit has established, documented and implemented the maintenance of a quality management system and has continually improve the effectiveness in accordance with the requirement of the standard the customer expects from the organisation of Coca Cola.
The organisation uses the frame of Total Quality Management within the organisation production phase and accept it to be the management technique for the organisation that is used to communicate to employees about what the exact requirements for the production of the desired quality of products and services and how the employees should be influenced in order to take perfect action for the completion of the task according to the quality specifications (Benavides-Velasco, Quintana-García and Marchante-Lara 2014).
Basic Concepts of Quality, Vision, Mission and Objectives of an Organization
The product that The Coca Cola Company provides the customers should maintain the quality and this is why the organisation adopts the Total Quality Management system within the organisation since the product is consumed by humans and it is extremely necessary that the health of people should come at the top priority list while manufacturing the aerated beverages.
Identify the TQM tool used by the organisation
In the organisation of The Coca Cola Company it has been identified that the organisation uses two of the total quality management tools which are 5S and Kaizen theories respectively. Both of these quality management systems are Japanese and they would be described as follows:
5S Tool
5S system was developed by Sakichi Toyoda, and there are 5 system phases of the 5S tool. The five of the phases utilised in this tool can be listed as below:
- Seiri:In Japanese Seiri means the process of sorting. This phase of the 5S system selects an area to starts with and then it is assigned to a team. The possible requirements of the product is listed and then the team is designated to stick ‘needed’ and ‘not needed’ stickers on the different materials utilised for the production of the final product including the machines, tools, parts, boxes, chairs and others (Akgün et al. 2014). Then the not needed materials are gathered in a quarantined area to decide if not needed is indeed unnecessary or they are bought too much out of the expectation level. The unwanted material is segregated from the workplace and their disposal is done properly.
- Seiton:This is the phase where straightening of the needed material is done through how often that used and the levels by which they can be used continually, hourly, daily, weekly, monthly, yearly or less than within a year (Khanam, Siddiqui and Talib 2016).
- Seiso:Translating in from Japanese the word means to shine. This enables the organisation of Coca Cola Company to promote a clean work environment for motivating for an efficient increase of cleaning in maintaining of the workplaces. This is a much more induced cleaning process then just dusting or hovering (Fu et al. 2015). And it is just not on the machine or the outside of the machine but the cleaning of every aspect related with the manufacturing of the product is regulated in the routine and has been a set standard for the daily work of the employee.
- Seiketsu:This word can be translated to standardise, and in the organisation it is to make sure that best practices are utilised in the work area and all the works need to be conducted in the same fashion. the standards of The Coca Cola company is visible and they have been producing the most controllable and easy to maintain practices within the organisation maintaining higher standards for housekeeping and workplace organisation at all times through their product (Kiran 2016).
- Shitsuke:This phase in Japanese means to sustain and secure the future. It is the fees within the total quality management system that helps in the stimulation to maintain the high standards in the production (Gutierrez-Gutierrez, Barrales-Molina and Kaynak 2018). It is very important to prepare a role model like the managers, team leads or supervisors to initiate the difference in the space. This is a phase that is developed over time and answers all the standards of 5S stitched together.
Kaizen Theory
Kaizen is basically a Japanese hold where Kai means change and Zen means for the betterment. Therefore Kaizen theory is mostly based on the continuous improvement which by the philosophy means the ways to continuously finding out ways for improving the operations. The Kaizen theory involved in the identifying of the benchmarks of excellent practices during the entire process of manufacturing the end product and instilling the employees’ sense of ownership to the process (Herzallah, Gutiérrez-Gutiérrez and Munoz Rosas 2014).
The focus remains on the reduction of the time required for the process to request for loans in bank as well as the listening of the amount of scrap that has been generated due to the milling machines or the number of casualties that has happened due to the manufacturing process. It also focus is on the continuous improvement for solving the problems regarding customers or suppliers like the frequent changes of request from the part of the customers for shipping quantities and supplies that needs to maintain a really high quantity and quality (Talib and Rahman 2015).
This theory believes that there is a chance of continuous improvement with the virtual aspect for handling in operation associated with the clothes people dealing with the operation who are in the best position for identifying the changes that should be implemented within the production process. Therefore, the employee involvement is a big factor in the continuous improvement programs according to the Kaizen theory.
The implementation methods of the TQM tool
The Coca Cola Company uses Kaizen theory since it believes that the small improvements are at the top priority rather than implementing the bigger ones. On the other hand it also believes that using the knowledge that every employee in the organisation has is better than depending on the verdicts of an expert (Al-Dhaafri, Al-Swidi and Yusoff 2016). From the viewpoint of Coca Cola Company the 5S system describes how the company can walk to improve the gap that the company is recently facing with efficiency and effectiveness in the production of the final product by identifying and storing the items that has been used for the production process.
Corporate Structure in an Organization and Role of Quality
The organisation believes that installing the philosophy of continuous movement with the 5S system within the organisation would eventually lead to ultimate success.
The Coca Cola company the streams the employees in the methods of the statistic process control or SPC, which in turn implements the other tools utilised for the quality improvement of the process. It then utilizes these methods as a normal aspect of the employee’s day to day activities and operations (Mosadeghrad 2015). The employee involvement is then introduced by building work teams and they help in utilisation of problem solving techniques by working within these teams. These helps in the development of the sense of operator ownership through this processes and the US these crucial steps are followed as a part of philosophy for the everyday operations within the organisation.
How successful was the implementation?
So far it has been understood that the components of the total quality management and the tools used behind the establishment of the total quality management in the day to day operations of the organisation has being successful and this can be understood with the following process of production.
Coca cola has standardised the manufacturing of PET bottles by implementing two components for the utilisation of the PET bottle for producing PET resin and bottle forming into a non recyclable bottle. For the due to the improvement of the quality the bottle making has been evolved into a recycle plant-bottle that replaces the use of the material that consisted 30 per cent of the component and introduces plant-based material and ethanol for the formation of the PET resin (Chvala and Johnson 2017).
It is done introduced in the formation of the bottles and thus the plant bottles are introduced within the organisation. The rejecting of the defective materials is also done through an environmental friendly process with water treatment and carbonation process. The overall manufacturing of The Coca Cola Enterprises is highly appreciated by the government and does it can be said that the total quality management for the production behind the end products are justified (Ware 2014).
The success of Coca Cola Company can also be understood by the way the customers are satisfied with the end products and also by the way the Coca Cola Company has control over its customer satisfaction with a quote imprinted on the bottle that the organisation produces.
this is a generated feedback process where is a customer find any fault with the manufacturing on the product and is not satisfied with the end product, then the customer can enter that code into The Coca Cola database provided by the company and the customer can be able to find out in which plant the manufactured product was developed and at where it was distributed to (Talib, Rahman and Qureshi 2016). This would help the customer in obtaining satisfaction because if there is a faulty group of Coke bottles then they can be recalled before any other customer finds another problem with the manufacturing of the particular batch of Coke products.

How the organisation dealt with change?
The acceptance of Coca Cola with change management in the process can be understood with the variation of products that coca cola has been utilising in the production of its new and innovative products. The company checks for all the bottles produced in the organisation for meeting the correct fill level and make sure that every bottle has the correct label. Coca Cola also routines origins the competitiveness for achieving the increase customer satisfaction and the continuous improvement of the quality of their products since the market is ever changing according to the need or requirements of the customer (Calabrese and Corbò 2015).
It is the teamwork in The Coca Cola Company that is heightened, as the organisation understands death teamwork is essential when random changes are occurring with the requirements of the customer and thus every staff is involved in the production process for managing the changes in the system. Customer involvement is also thus are implemented within the organisation to manage the change within the products. The increasingly health conscious customers and their requirements have made The Coca Cola company to introduce products like Coca Cola Zero and Diet Coke. The Coca Cola Company enables the customers to provide feedback and this opportunity of receiving feedback and other information from the customer reduces the waste and cost in the manufacturing process and provides coca cola with a much height and competitive advantage then its contemporary competitive organisations in the market.
Recommendations based on a chosen TQM tool for the Coca Cola Company
As a personal discretion it can be suggested that The Coca Cola Company can utilise control charts as a method for statistical process control or SPC (To, Yu and Lee 2018). This would be a standardized control system for the production processes and they can provide a lot of benefit to the organisation as a whole including the manufacturing process, the overall quality of the product and the heightened reputation of the organisation is well.
Reasons how it might benefit the organisation going forward
The control charts would enable the organisation in having a total control over the distribution of variation instead of the attempted control over every individual variation in the manufacturing process. The upper and the lower control as well as the tolerance limit would be calculated for the process and all the sample measures would be regulated in a central line obtained between the two sets of limits (Aquilani et al. 2017).
These plotted lines would represent the stability of the trend of the process and according to that actions can be taken based on this trend rather than having and action taken over the individual variation. this would prevent the over connection or the compensation for a variation of cunning and random that can have a possible leading of the entire organisation of The Coca Cola Company too many errors regarding the total quality management of the end product.

In conclusion, it can be said that the total quality management within the organisation of The Coca Cola Company is handled extremely well with the utilisation of both the total quality management tools of 5S system and Kaizen theory. The organisation neutralizes its full potential to make sure that the total quality management tools helps in maintaining the overall quality of the products not just as an end product but also as a manufacturing process within the organisation as a whole.

Instead of that with the thorough analysis of the total quality management within the organisation another tool has been suggested for the total quality management of the products in the organisation that would enable the organisation to have a statistical process control.
