Meaning and Characteristics of Psychopathy
The term psychopathy is considered a neuropsychiatric disorder that is derived from a lack of empathy, deficient emotional responses and poor control of behavior that sometimes results in the criminal behavior of a person (Abramovitch, et al., 2021). People with this type of personality disorder carry a danger of violence and also, they do not respond properly to the given treatment. There is such majority of crimes that are treated as violent crimes which are committed by a group of offenders. The paper will include the meaning of psychopathy along with interlinking between serious offending in society with psychopathy. The behavior that has influenced the function of the brain will be described through several causes which includes genetic factors, brain injury issues and other environment-related factors. Some factors are there that leads to such disorder to an individual will be discussed that including unemotional, irresponsibility and narcissistic things. The link will be analyzed in the paper between the criminal behavior and psychopathy of a person. The comparison will be evaluated between psychopathy as well as criminal recidivism which will be explored in such a limited area.
Personality disorders are considered as mental health circumstances regarding thinking, feeling and perceiving of an individual that is related to others. It is referred to as the challenging category of personality disorder which consisted of impulsive as well as irresponsible behavior of a person that might often lead to criminal behavior (NHS, 2018). Psychopaths are referred to as a plain method of antisocial personality disorder. It is called a more serious disorder that is related to genetic traits and is considered dangerous to individuals. Some primary psychopaths are caused due to genetic factors and secondary psychopaths are caused due to the environment. There are some checklists known as the Psychopathy Checklist (PCL) established by Robert Hare that is commonly in use for assessing the degree of psychopathy related to clinical observations (Brazil & Forth, 2016).
Psychopaths show a deficiency of emotion that includes social emotions like shame, embarrassment and guilt. Psychopaths are considered notorious due to the absence of fear. When a situation requires an experiment then normal people think that something painful thing will occur to them that includes mild electronic shock or any such activity through which a brain activates. In psychopaths’ people, the brain shows no activities. When a person has antisocial personality disorder then there are some signs like exploiting, violating and manipulation of rights of other persons. They behave irresponsibly during such social behavior due to which other persons lack concern (Antoniadou, et al., 2019). There would be difficulty in maintaining long-distance relationships with other people as they are not able to maintain their anger. They mostly behave with other people regarding any issue in their life and also, they continuously violate the law. The disorder affects men as compared to women due to their genetics as well as childhood experiences which includes child abuse. There are chances that this person has seen many difficulties in their life that is related to their family issue. For example, one of the parents of the individual may misuse alcohol due to which there is the involvement of family conflicts. Due to this, the social care services get involved in supporting the children of the family (Wolde, et al., 2021).
Psychopathy and Interlinking with Criminal Behavior
There are some signs through which the person can be treated as a psychopath that includes negative emotions of a person. It means when they get feeling like sadness, desperation, fear and regret. The person is referred to as more rational compared with other individuals. When there is a life-threatening situation, then these persons have more chances of surviving such circumstances (Ribeiro da Silva, et al., 2021). These persons make use of any stimulant drugs for achieving the adrenaline fix that they are craving. Such people get bored easily by other individuals and such things that they do. When any person is asking them anything them majorly, they lied to their question. They often choose to lie to other individuals than by speaking the truth. Such person behaves differently in several circumstances due to which they are called as an actor and other person compliments them for gaining their trust. They act in a manner impulsive way due to which they are characterized under risky behavior. They may act in such a way like other people will not act in that manner. These people never accept responsibility regarding their behavior as well as action as when any problem exist then they think that it is not their fault due to which they do not feel regret regarding any situation. There are chances that they may self-harm due to their hyperactive behavior as they get angry in any kind of situation (Shafti, et al., 2021). These person does not have knowledge that they are psychopaths and they have a good feeling about themselves as they did not notice any such behavior.
People that are considered psychopaths might have an increased risk of violence and they have a lack empathy. They are also acknowledged as manipulative and exploitative and sometimes behave impulsively. Researchers have identified that some areas of the brain are complex and involved in activities like emotion processing, decision making and empathizing. For example, amygdala, ventromedial prefrontal cortex and insula activities are considered at a minimum level within the people who are called psychopaths when they see other people that are in distress situations (Yoder, et al., 2021). The weakened functioning regarding such parts of the brain disturbs the capability of psychopaths’ individuals as they form an association among stimuli that have various limitations which includes hurting different persons. There is a consequence of fear due to which these persons many times make a poor choice. These minimized activities of the brain resulted in emotional stimuli as well as a decision-making process. Some children that have a lack of guilt, lack of empathy and shallow emotions are considered in a risky situation for the development of behavior of psychopaths. These children might have chances to adapt an anti-social behavior that includes bullying and the formation of angry behavior. There are fewer chances that they respond to happy emotions. They cannot form any long-distance relationships. The study of Twins and adoption be used for investigation of such behavior which makes an influence over genes of someone along with their environment (The Royal Society, 2017). It shows that influence of genetic is considered as important for explaining differences of several persons upon their features.
Causes of Psychopathy
Some factors are there that contributes as an important cause for psychopathic traits. The first factor is genes and biology which is considered as the basic reason for psychopathy. The brain cannot be blamed for such activities of psychopaths but there is a reason for generations of members of the family due to which such behavior arises. The second factor is learning that is received by children that are related to the social environment of a family (Viding & McCrory, 2018). The child observes the behavior of people in school and their home and learn such things and act in that manner. There is a case when such kids get raised in an abusive environment of family then the child accepts such environment and learn such abusive language. In these cases, a child think that abusive environment is considered normal. The third factor is childhood trauma in which a child does not have any kind of skills or ability to survive within the environment (Engelstad,, et al., 2019). Such cases arises when a child is sent from one home to different home and attends different adoption programs that results in a child “shutting down”. It is not easy to give counselling to such children. The fourth factor is loss of neocortical functioning due to which an individual person observes impulsive, uncontrolled thinking and immature processes. The teens have such kind of oppositional behavior as well as conduct disorder due to which their behavior change leading to consequences to part of brain. The brain also did not develop in proper manner till the age of 24 years of such individuals.
Serious offending is an act that is committed by serious offenders during the last 12 months that includes the act of theft, robbery, assault with injury, burglary and selling of drugs. Serious offending is not considered a synonym to psychopathy due to which many criminals are not considered psychopaths and some of the criminals use their abilities to oppress the general public. There is a similarity of personality structure as well as unethical behavior among criminals and psychopaths. Some features of psychopathy include impulsivity, callousness, criminal versatility and absence of empathy that makes a theoretical link between psychopathy and criminal behavior of violence (Johnson, 2019). A person who has the background of criminal is considered as consistently purposive while a psychopaths’ person is not regarded as purposive at all. Some experiments were conducted for analyzing the persons that commit crimes and act violently are merely suffering from any mental disorder activities. There are some items related to criminal behavior that is included in the list of PCL test but such a list is not termed as an appropriate tool that identifies the behavior of psychopaths. The prediction of violence is most effective in psychopaths when compared with general criminality (Tetreault, et al., 2021).
There is an interlink between psychiatric disorders with a personality disorder which is considered as a feature that is mutual among serious offending which creates a common link between offences committed by criminals and antisocial personality. There is a requirement of two paths between the Impulsive Behavioral Style as well as Behavior of Criminals for an explanation of their relationship through the use of PCL-R test data (Cunha, et al., 2020). The first path is considered a direct path while the second path is mediated by items included in PCL-R related to behavior problems. The direct path among them is understandable through the way of lack of concern and lack of risk-taking for the purpose of future. In the experiment, the fundings were such that there has been deficiency of structural as well as functional deficits in a violent offender in their anterior part of the brain, precisely in the temporal lobe along with frontal lobe (Saladino, et al., 2021). There is no unitary construction of aggression along with violence as they take several forms and include different levels of interpersonal as well as social complexity. Some psychopaths are there that comes in contact with the justice system due to their objectives is at high risk in terms of crime and violence.
Signs and Symptoms of Psychopathy
However, typical criminal career is considered as short for criminals when compared with psychopaths. When a criminal’s career gets started in their early stage then their whole life will be spent as a criminal, such pattern is not detected in psychopaths. Serious offending might convert into criminal recidivism and there is no link between psychopathy and criminal recidivism. The findings shows that there is probability of higher than 2.5 times that psychopathic convicts will be released from jail when compared with other criminals though they are expected to be recidivate (Gingerich, 2019). When there is a reoccurring violence then psychopathy is regarded as an important part of an assessment of violence. Psychopathy is measured with a clinical test of PCL-R that is considered an important predictor of recidivism as well as violence among criminals. There are some traits that make contribution towards an understanding of behavior of the criminals and it will evaluate the possibilities of reoffending.
The paper has analyzed the information on the concept of psychopathy. It stated that it is a neuropsychiatric disorder or mental disorder that is noticeable through egocentric as well as antisocial activity. It means when a person who wanted to achieve something then it makes use of manipulation and force. it defined the signs and symptoms with regards to psychopath’s person that includes deficiency of emotions and doing such acts that might results in violation of statutes. The reasons of psychopathy were also included in the paper which involves their impulsive behavior and low response of the parts of functioning of the brain. It also includes their aggressive behavior in any kind of situation due to which these persons not able to maintain any relationship with other people. The paper has described the interlink between psychopath’s person with the criminals that includes some impulsive nature factors which is considered as directly in relation with criminals. The criminals are indirectly related to aggressive behavior that has linked with the behavior of psychopaths along with the violent behavior is also counted as same among them.
