There two forms of integration; horizontal and vertical. Horizontal integration is when for example tour operator buys another one on the same level of the distribution chain. Vertical integration involves two companies which are on different levels in the distribution chain bought or merge. There can be forward integration, for example, a travel agency is bought by the tour operator, and backward integration, for instance, happens when a hotel is bought by a tour operator.
Any travel and tourism organization is dependent on the others in order to be effective and efficient in its operations. For instance, attraction to visitors is dependent on the means of transport to bring the customers to the reach of the attractions which also needs the local and regional tourist boards services for its promotion.
