On a beautiful day of sunshine in spring, we were sailing on our boat in the fresh waters of the Black Sea. Captain Peg Leg was asleep. We were sailing smoothly until I noticed there was a weird current of water. I had to let the captain know before someone panicked. I walked and then ran to the door as the anxiety grew inside of me.
But, stopped to hear someone yell “watch out!”. I peeked to my left and was in shock to see something move in the water.
It was big, looked about 15 feet long and it had sharp shiny ends. As I approached the doorknob to alert the captain, I felt someone ferociously grab my hand. I looked behind me and saw Tom.
He was yelling out words at the top of his lungs that I couldn’t understand. I tried to calm him down, but to no avail. I didn’t know what got into him. He had the piercing fear in his eyes that I had never seen before.
As if he had seen the devil. Suddenly I heard about every man on the deck screaming and yelling as if they were going to die, but why?
I felt the boat shaking as if we were being hit by a big wave, but that couldn’t have been possible. I ran to the deck and looked farther out and the water was unbelievably still, as if we were being hit by an imaginary wave, but my senses were telling me otherwise “Could that be a Wave? What was that?” I thought to myself.
I felt the boat jolt to the side and I lost my balance and fell. As I was trying to get up, I felt another one, as if something was trying to break into our boat. I got up, but I saw something emerge from the water, it was black and shiny, had fins like a shark, and big white jaws that would haunt you in your dreams. It flew above the deck in blazing speed.
Tom was in the shark’s way, I tried to warn him, but within a second the shark with its enormous teeth grabbed Tom like a dog would a bone, pulled him into its mouth. It just ripped him apart right in front of my eyes. I got up and yanked the door leading me off the deck as if my life depended on it, which it did.
I ran down to the Captain’s quarters. I tried his door and it was unlocked. I saw him sleeping on the floor with the blanket halfway on the bed. The fall must have left him unconscious. I tried to wake him up. “Captain! Captain! Please wake up, it’s an emergency!”.
He still wouldn’t budge. I grabbed his jug and dumped all the water it had on him, hoping he’d wake up. He opened his eyes and attacked me, as if I was a monster in a bad dream. I slapped him across his face, wishing he would snap out of his drowsiness.
He awoke, sat up and saw me. I said “Captain! There’s a big black shark out there destroying our ship! It ate Tom! Ripped him into shreds right in front of me! We need to do something”. I prayed we weren’t the only ones left on the boat.
Many many dangers in the ocean and we are punished with this one, why? Have I sinned a sin so bad that I have been given the punishment of facing this demon? The Captain and I headed out on deck to face the beast, not knowing what dangers were lurking ahead.
