Sadly the tale of Romeo and Juliet did not end well. From their families constantly trying to find ways to fight or argue to Romeo getting banned to Mantua for the death of Tybalt. There was just so much drama. .. We also know that the couple ended up dead by the end of the story. So, Who is to blame for their deaths?
Benvolio convinces Romeo to go to the ball. If Romeo didn’t attend the ball, he might not have met Juliet.
The Capulet and Montague families continue their bitter feud, forcing the young lovers to keep their relationship a secret. Friar Laurence is at fault because he married Juliet and he gave her a sleeping potion. If he wouldn’t have done that she wouldn’t be able to fake their deaths which means they would still be alive. Romeo and Juliet are at fault for their own deaths as they ultimately make their own decisions. The nurse makes the relationship harder than it should be and acts two-faced.
Multiple points of evidence are leading me to believe that everyone had at least a little bit to do with their deaths but I think Romeo And Juliet are the most at fault because Romeo didn’t have to kill himself because Juliet was supposedly dead and same goes for Juliet.
On act 3 scene 5 Her father states (this is in the modern text) “ Forget about you, you worthless girl! I’ll tell you what. Go to church on Thursday or never look me in the face again” Yes that was a little harsh but he does state either marry Paris or never look her father in the face.
So she had the option to do that the whole time which I believe is better than faking your death. There is some realization that her father is not as nice to Juliet as he should be. Being as rude to her as he was could in return drive her to be disobedient and get herself into trouble. Maybe that’s why she went and did what she did (fake death).
Friar Laurence ends up marrying the 2 because he believes that their marriage will help stop the ancient feud between the families but he is easily mistaken. If Romeo had not gotten married to Juliet then he could have fought Tybalt when he was challenged but since he couldn’t, Mercutio stood up for him saying that Romeo doesn’t wanna fight. Tybalt then tries to fight Mercutio and Romeo steps in between them trying to stop it and Tybalt stabs Mercutio from under Romeo’s arm. It all could have been somewhat avoided if Romeo and Juliet had not gotten married
The nurse also surprisingly took a role in their deaths. In act three scene five the nurse states “ I think it’s best if you married with the county. Oh, he is a lovely gentleman. Romeo’s a dishclout compared to him.” The nurse is pressuring Juliet by the nurse pushing her to marry Paris. She also states “ Tybalt is gone, and Romeo is banished, Romeo that killed him is banished. The nurse is at fault for putting Juliet in a depressed mood over Romeo and Tybalt.
