Educating Rita, which premiered in 1980, was a critical and commercial success, and was made into a film in 1983 starring Julie Walters and Michael Caine. Shirley Valentine, which premiered in 1986, was also a success, and was made into a film in 1989 starring Pauline Collins and Tom Conti.
