Literature Review: To assess the experiences of international nursing students during their education in abroad
Discuss about the Literature Review for Demographical and Cultural Challenges.
There is a tremendous change in the culture these days. A new culture has emerged that is going abroad for future studies. It is a benchmark in the society these days. This report covers the experience of students that are gained while international studies. The main focus in this report is on the experiences gained by international nursing students during their education in abroad. There are various benefits and drawbacks that are faced by students when they go for studies in some foreign country. The experience of nursing requires a complete team work as they are assigned duties that need to be completed in a team. Thus to maintain the discipline while working they face various issues and. Though there are programmes to maintain cultural diversity so that all the conflicts could be removed. The goal of nursing students is to experience international learning’s by getting chance to work in a team and to explore different cultures. It is beneficial for them as it helps students to stand out of the crowd after completing the education.
According to (Woodall, Hiller and Resnick, 2014), when students shift to different country that is various challenges that are faced by them. Ireland is one such country which has an entirely different culture and diversity. Thus if students shift here for gaining international experience they will face demographical and cultural challenges. It is difficult for students to get mixed up with different culture and communities from throughout the world. The experience of nursing requires team work as they are assigned duties to be completed in a team. Thus to maintain the discipline while working is difficult due to the conflicts that exists between student’s. Though there are classes on cultural diversity so that all the conflicts could be removed (Woodall, Hiller and Resnick, 2014). The goal of nursing students is to experience international learning’s by getting chance to work in a team and to explore different cultures. The second benefit of international nursing student is to provide better health care facilities as there are limited options. Thus it can be clearly stated that there are number of advantage for nursing student to take part in international learning experience. It provides an entirely different atmosphere to work that helps them to enhance their thinking and living style. It is also beneficial as it allow student to explore their awareness in the global market that helps in broaden the nursing practise by learning new culture. Nursing is all about dealing with the health care department thus working in different country helps in knowing about different health issue and the reasons of disease. It helps the student to experience such conditions and broaden their point of view. The impact of internationally experience will last for longer in student’s personal as well as professional life. From the research it can be stated that experience of nursing students in the international environment has positive influence in the development (Jamaludin, et. al, 2018). The culture of Ireland lead to biased experience for the students from different country as the culture of Ireland is quit dominating. The priority is always given to students of their own country. The first chance to take part in any event is given to local students (Jamaludin, et. al, 2018). Thus the international students are prone to face such issue.
Benefits of International Learning Experience for Nursing Students
According to(Curtin, Martins and Schwartz, 2015), The society of Ireland has the values which are entirely different from other countries. Studying and gaining experience from aboard is beneficial as they have experience educators to give lessons and provide training. The disputes between students have negative impact on learning. If students gets proper training then this issue could be resolved. Some of the students felt like they were are in minorities as they are not given equal importance as others. The native students were given more privilege as compared to the overseas students. They also faced issue while making groups (Curtin, Martins and Schwartz, 2015). To experience the duties they are asked to make groups thus the entire native student’s team up to one and the internal students face discrimination at this time. The student’s also facing the issue due to caste, colour and creed. The main issue is connecting with the people so that they could easily adapt the culture of that place and know about people (Long, 2018). Apart from all this the students who try to experience international studies have the opportunities to develop personal as well as professional growth. International experience somewhere forced the student’s to examine all the things on their own and face the disparities individually. If considering the case of nursing student’s it is important as they get the chance of learning the health concerns of different country, they make use of different resources thus it will allow students to get advanced knowledge.
In the views of…, students who have travelled to abroad for experiencing the international nursing assignment faces cross- cultural issues. Thus before travelling to different country students should have a brief research about the culture of different country along with their goals and objectives. International experiences offers various nursing benefits like it is beneficial for developing various type of different experience like working in hospitals, clinics and community health outreaches. It also offers pre-licensure and advanced practice nursing students that offers various physical therapies, nutrition, medical and other health science students could improve interdisciplinary fellowship and provide more wide-ranging care to the population being that is served (Mikkonen, et. al, 2016). It is important for nursing students to learn about diverse patients so that they can influence from social behaviour. It is beneficial for the students as it helps in bringing sensitivity and cultural awareness. The journey of students start from getting pre experience of all the cultural competences and that could be done by attending seminars, discussions about all the culture and socio-economic conditions of the health care. Thus it helps them to experience all the site sessions by demonstrating experience about all the health issues. It also helps the student to participate in all the debriefing experience that is related to cultural competences.
Cross-cultural issues and their impact on nursing students
In the views of (Mikkonen, et. al, 2016), accessing the experiences of international nursing students during their education in abroad is beneficial in many ways. It helps in seeing the world from different perceptive, knowing different people and learning about their perception to see things. This will help them to improve their personality (Mikkonen, et. al, 2016). While studying somewhere in the abroad it gives different kind of experience as they follow different style of education. That will help them to experience different culture and traditions. Nursing is all about knowing important factor of that country what is rending in new culture. While practising nursing in broad it is helpful as it will allow student to adapt to new methods of treatment and know better ways to learn. It can be a life changing environment as it allows student to explore and discover new things. In today’s global economy the nurses studied from some abroad are given much importance when they return back to home country. Thus there are many students to get a global health experience while taking part in abroad studies. The field of nursing gains more advantage as it provide various opportunities in the nursing curricula and also provides global competences. Studying abroad also offers nursing students to gain opportunities and met all the academic requirements. It helps to gain knowledge and also awareness regarding the diversity issue (Kohlbry, 2016). It is difficult to immerse into a new culture and gain a different experience. It also helps them in improving social equality in the country and also helps in accessing the barriers of health care. Apart from that it helps nursing students to gain more completion, by interacting with people of different culture and how follow entirely different ethnicity. Students also gain appreciation from the people of their home country that reflects cultural stereotyping (Kohlbry, 2016). Apart from all these the main motive is they get personal growth that contributes in boosting their self-confidence and sense of autonomy.
According to (Pasila and Kääriäinen, 2017), the nursing students who are studying internationally that is if they are perusing studies in abroad is beneficial. As it open up doors of many job opportunities. When they return back to their native country they will get better job options as it will help them to stay out of the crowd and become unique from other students (Dobrowolska, et. al, 2015). Definitely while studying abroad gives a wider perception to deal with things and know more about advanced technology after studying from abroad students comes to know about many experiences and things which the students studying locally are not aware about. From the experiences of many students it can be stated that they choose to study abroad in the hope of getting better understanding of different cultures. It also helps in building a strong network by interacting with different humans. It case of nursing it is always beneficial to know the ideas and perception of other student, thus studying abroad opens a person to know about thinking of different people and connect with the patients of different diversity. From personal point of view it helps in boosting up the confidence and get better jobs (Lee, 2018). While studying abroad students get the chance to take part in international exchange programs that helps in knowing about the different critical cases. Studying abroad offers a wider platform for nurses to get benefits of internationalized teaching.
Positive influence of international experience on personal and professional growth
According to (Bohman and Borglin, 2014), there are various personal issues that are faced by people while studying aboard. They face the issue of time zone from their home country which could be an issue to connect to their mates. Thus it somewhere demotivates them. In case of Ireland the international nursing students get the feeling of outsider. As people over there has no intention to mingle with people of different culture. That adds up a problematic situation from the students from abroad (Long, 2014). They are left all alone which working on an assignment or while performing nursing duties. The priority is always given to students of their home country. Thus discrimination can be an issue in some country. Apart from that students also issue due to language and cross cultural barriers. The barrier to communicate somewhere makes the life different as they are not able to share their ideas with others nor they are able to understand other opinions (Walton-Roberts, 2015). In case of nursing they need to analyses the complete situation of patients and respond to them in their language. Thus this can be issue to overcome such barriers student should learn second language so that an effective and smooth communication goes on. The nursing students may also face social as well as academic challenge. The academic score is affected due to poor practical knowledge as they are not given many options to take part in practical sessions nor they are able to communicate with the patients fluently. The research states that nursing student face problem in terms of cultural of the country (Gardiner and Kwek, 2017). As every country has different laws and regulation of the health care sector that need to be followed. Nursing students might practise strategies in their home country which is entirely different in the international market. They do the treatment in other way thus they need to adjust accordingly. This can be taken in a positive way as they get chance to know about different strategies which could help them to be unique. Once they return back to their native country it becomes easy for them as they are appreciated by all the people because of the unique strategies and practises adopted by them.
In the opinion of (Salamonson,et. al, 2015), international studies are promoted and has become an effective manner of mandatory studies. For the nursing students studying aboard is a plus point as they get to learn about the differences and similarities in cultures (Button, Harrington and Belan, 2014). The educational practises that are undertaken by nursing students abroad are beneficial as they take decisions by taking care of vulture, beliefs, traditions and practices of patients. Thus there are various nursing programs that are launched to gain cultural competency. It offers better health care experience by increasing intercultural sensitivity. The abroad studies of nursing is majorly focused on practical knowledge, thus practical placements help nursing students to develop themselves in their professional.
Advantages of studying abroad for nursing students
According to (Al?Zayyat and Al?Gamal, 2014), globalization has increases recently due to different culture. The nursing students are one of the important parts of this globalization. As they try to opt for abroad studies due to better practical placements and options to learn new things. It also helps them to learn how to communicate with each other using nonverbal methods (Nilsson, et. al, 2014). The process of adoption of new treatment methods helps them to grow professionally. The practical placement method is beneficial for nursing students as they help the nurses to relate their personal observation with treatment methods. It also helps them to combine their theoretical knowledge into practical implication (Bezrukova, et. al, 2016). They are given options to directly interact with clients, work in team of people who belong to entirely different background and also work in an environment where priority is given to people of the home country. But it helps them to develop creative skills to handle the situation. They are forced to develop critical thinking practices learning new methodologies in nursing profession (Button, Harrington and Belan, 2014). Nursing is a profession in which discrimination regarding caste, creed and colour is ignored. Thus completing the education from abroad in the nursing department helps them to provide meaningful care to people who are different from their culture. It is an effective way as once the education is completed add up extra star because the student have completed their education from abroad.
According to (Caldwell and Purtzer, 2015), International studies are a broad term that has broad range of topic to come up. There are various issues that are faced by nursing students in the current time like problem in dealing forms of presentations, seminars conducted on a practice basis in entirely different culture. They experience international relation by having a deep understanding of culture, belief and customs of different country. It also helps them to know about how country survive and also it becomes difficult for the students to know about a platform to understand the policies, beliefs, nature of different countries. It is beneficial for students to learn about different things in the real world. International studies help them to gain advantage of global knowledge (Hamamura and Laird, 2014). It help nurses to gain skills generalist and many more international knowledge as gives you a great platform to understand social policy and practise. It increase huge range of employment and is beneficial for the home country also.
In the views of (Koch, et. al, 2015), international experience is essential for nurses as it help to learn about different people, cultures and belief. Thus the profession of nursing is a delicate balance between science and art. The nurse who has knowledge about different cultures and understands the problem of patients is considered as more effective. International studies help in getting better nursing skills and also enhances knowledge, way of communication and confidence to deal with all kind of people (Koch, et. al, 2015). The learning experience of nurses from abroad help them in improving cultural awareness by providing better health care facilities. As it said that without the awareness and understanding of cultural influences, nurses may miss important indications into human health and behaviour. Thus abroad studies help them in building information and becoming aware about cultural preferences. Considering few examples, when a nurse goes for abroad studies they are not familiar about the language and customers of the foreign country v(Browne, Fetherston and Medigovich, 2015). Thus it may disinterest the patient for some time and might treat it in a wrong way. As a red mark on chines person can be considered as a sign of ill treatment by some nurses but it is a temporary mark that are there on Chinese’s people. Once the nurse get to learn about all the new remedies and methods used for the treatment. When they return back to their native country it is beneficial as they get knowledge about new technologies which would be new. Thus it will be beneficial to capture patient’s attention. It is also true that international volunteer involvements promote cultural self-awareness, sensitivity, flexibility, and also help nurses to develop the ability to avoid stereotyping among nursing students. It is true that they face a different experience while studying in abroad. They face many issues due to cultural differences.
In the views of (Jones and Neubrander, 2018), experiencing international nursing studies help nurses to see and understand all the physical conditions and the diseases that are not seen in their home county. Being a part of nursing practise in abroad helps them to learn new ideas and methodology for the treatment. They also help them to learn about new illness that are not seen in their home country and now about the illness that is seen in other countries. It also help nurses to know about the risk associated with people of different lifestyle (Gallagher and Polanin, 2015). It can be stated that students often value opportunities and practises that are gathered due to abroad studies. It helps them to extend their knowledge and know more about clinical knowledge. It helps them to adapt to new environment. Like when students go out for abroad studies they face an issue due to different environment. Initially it becomes difficult of them to get settles. As in some countries people do not get mingled easily with the students from different country. There exists some sort of discrimination and partiality between student from the home country and student from the other country. Thus mostly the outcome resulted due to higher studies is positive.
According to (Kent, et. al, 2015), assessing the experiences of international nursing students during their education in abroad is quite different. It depends upon country to country. Some of the countries environment is so flexible and the laws are also not that strong thus nursing practices could be adapted easily. Some of countries are so rigid that they discriminate the students on the basis of caste, creed and colour. Thus it becomes difficult for students to actively participate in those activities. It is beneficial for nursing students as after completing their studies the outcome will be effective. It would become very comfortable in providing care to the individual who belong to entirely different cultural and ethnic background. Apart from that nursing is gaining popularity in the USA and gives them advancement to practice nursing but many programmes have recently started in Ireland. Thus, now a days students travel to Ireland for future studies but they also face issues issue due to diversity. It is an effective way as it offers nursing student with increased opportunity to participate in all the cultural experiences (Bücker and Korzilius, 2015). It also offers a flexible opportunities by offering students advantage to be part of all the programs at international level. It somewhere offers exposure to student to learn about new things and technology. Educating nurses by offering them to practice experience at international level is an important way of developing their capacity globally (Lapkin, Levett-Jones and Gilligan, 2015). Nursing is the only professional that is always on demand and to stand out from all the other nurses international education is the key medium to success. International nursing programmes for nurses provide them education at wider level.
Conclusion
It can be concluded from this report that when student shift from one country to different for future studies they face various challenges. They face issue due to diversity in culture, communication issues and various other perceptions that leads to conflicts. It is not only the negative part that needs to be considered. This report covers the positive outcome of studying abroad and the benefits that are gained by nurses are listed. It can be concluded that abroad nursing practices provides an entirely different atmosphere to work in. It also helps them to improve their thinking power and living style. It is beneficial because it allows student to explore their mindfulness in the global market that helps in broaden the nursing practise by learning new culture.
