Art and Rhetoric
Chapters 5 and 6 deal with imagery, empowerment, and violence. After reading the chapters, please complete the discussion assignment below. I’m setting this up as a discussion so you can see, after you post, what your classmates are thinking about the connection between art and rhetoric.
This assignment addresses a couple of key critical thinking objectives:
Upon completion of this assignment:
- You will recognize the similarities and differences between the intentions, biases, assumptions, and arguments of an authors and his/her character(s)–in this case it’s a painter and her subjects.
- And in doing so, you will demonstrate, in the class discussion, sensitivity and understanding of cultural perspective, its manifestation with argumentative imagery, and its impact on the author/painter, reader/viewer, and their larger American experience.
Directions:
Follow the link at the bottom of this page to Ana Teresa Fernandez’s website and click on her “Paintings” tab. Then click on either “Ablutions” or “Pressing Matters.” Look at the paintings and read her artist’s statement at the bottom of the page, and write a discussion post that addresses your experience looking at the paintings in relation to what she says she was trying to accomplish in her work.
1. Did you see what she wanted you to see (and, if so, which images best delivered her message and why; if not, why not)?
2. How does other content on her website (her bio or other projects) affect how you understand the rhetoric of her work? Please spend 15-20 minutes looking at her work.
Please answer both of these questions in 150-250 words total (as in: combined).
*read chapter 5and6, then follow the instruction.
