“The world of the twenty-first century may well witness responses to globalization that celebrate ethnocentric nationalist beliefs promoting intolerance and hatred rather than acceptance of diversity” (Giddens et.al., 2018:84).
Chapter 4 emphasizes that when examining culture, sociologists must be careful not to engage in ethnocentric thinking and rather apply cultural relativism. However, it is conceded that employing cultural relativism can be both difficult and challenging to one’s own deeply seated values. For this discussion board, I want you to examine ethnocentric thinking (either on a national or global scale). I want you to find an example of ethnocentric thinking (the media is fraught with them) and discuss how the ethnocentric thinking is contributing to a current conflict. I encourage you to challenge yourself a bit and examine ethnocentrism coming from a culture that you identify with. Then discuss how applying cultural relativism might help to address or resolve the conflict.
