Remember to provide an original response to the discussion group to which you were assigned (just click “Reply” on the discussion prompt I provided for your topic), and then provide peer responses on at least 2 different classmates’ posts (click on “Reply” directly on their post). You can add one peer response to someone’s post in your group, but at least one of your peer responses must be made on a post from one of the other groups.
See the “Discussion Directions and Groups” document elsewhere in Module 1 for a reminder of directions and group membership.
Discussion Group W: The importance of water – We hear all the time how important it is to stay hydrated. But why is that? What are the properties of water that make it the most important inorganic molecule we put in our bodies?
Discussion Group X: Homeostasis – Define and provide an example of homeostasis in your body.
Discussion Group Y: Homeostatic imbalance and aging – Explain why, on average, a 75-year-old woman requires a much longer time to recover from the flu than does a woman who is 30 years old. You need to do some research on this, not just say “it’s an age thing.”
Discussion Group Z: Water and homeostasis – A 22-year-old male was riding his road bike in 100-degree(F) heat, when he became nauseated and weak, forcing him to stop and rest on the side of the road. He called 911 from his cell phone. When the ambulance came, the paramedics started intravenous therapy. What likely happened here? Explain the critical role of water to maintain homeostasis during exercise, especially in extreme conditions.
