Project #1 Cover Letter (Letter of Application) and Resume
For the first project , each class member is to read chapter five in the Kolin textbook. Then, find a currently advertised job, internship, or entrepreneurship on the Internet that is related to your major (Monster.com, Indeed, etc.) for which you could apply. You will need to include a copy of the job/internship/entrepreneurship (the actual job posting and its qualifications and responsibilities) AND the URL as part of the assignment.
Create a resume and a cover letter geared toward the job/internship/entrepreneurship you find on the Internet whose organization (your audience) would hire people with a degree in your major.
Cover Letter – Chapter 5
The purpose of a cover letter is to entice the reader to WANT to continue on and read the actual resume. Most resumes are never even read in the work world…your letter should modestly make the reader want to read your credentials. SO, needless to say, you would necessarily have to have a great resume put together BEFORE you could direct the reader’s attention to certain aspects of that resume. Please be sure to refer to Kolin (2015) pp.197-205 regarding cover letters (letters of application).
1) Use one of the basic formats of a business letter, including proper punctuation, capitalization, and placement of parts of a letter.
2) Remember to emphasize the four guidelines of the “you” attitude (pages 108-112) using appropriate professional language and tone in your cover letter.
3 Ensure that your purpose is clear and that your ideas are conveyed in an organized fashion. Be sure to inform the potential employer/internship of what you would bring to their endeavor, NOT what they can do for you.
Resume – Chapter 5
Please be sure to refer to Kolin (2015) pp.174-197 regarding resume guidelines and what to include/what to exclude.
1) Use a traditional format and be consistent. Include an objective statement and make the objective statement “focused” (pages 180-181 in the Kolin textbook).
2) Put your work experience and education in order by most recent.
3) Current/present positions should be written in present tense and past positions in past tense. Overall, strive to create a professional looking resume in which information is easy for employers to find.
You can choose which version of your resume/cover letter to use for the project as long as it is your real qualifications, work history, and education. Don’t worry about sharing your personal information because I am the only person who will see it.
The goal is for you to have a resume and cover letter that you can use or draw from if you apply for a job or internship before or after graduation.
