Ethical theories are relevant for ethical leadership because they help inform an individual’s moral compass. Good leaders can fit any number of leadership theories and blend moral concepts and ethics into their leadership and work practices. A good understanding of what constitutes a morally sound individual will aid in making ethical decisions. This week’s lesson pointed out that in the criminal justice system there are many individuals who are often working without direct supervision. They have to make decisions on their own so it is important that they are ethically sounds. Those who work in the various aspects of the criminal justice system are responsible for other people. They make decisions and decide the fates of those who pass through the system. Police officers and other law enforcement agencies are tasked with safeguarding the public. This is particularly important, as police need to be held to a higher standard. Their job is to maintain law and order so they absolutely need to adhere to the highest standard of morality and ethical decision-making. The safety of citizens depends on this.
If a police officer witnesses the unethical behavior of another officer they should report it. It can be damaging to the image of the department not to mention law enforcement as a whole. If people cannot trust the police, than it causes a lot of problems. In today’s current climate, there are many who do not trust officers because of incidents involving police brutality and the shooting of unarmed civilians. Not all police officers are unethical or break procedure but some do and this sets a negative perception for the agency as a whole. However, reporting unethical behavior of a fellow officer can be a hard decision to make because there is a sense of loyalty and brotherhood among law enforcement officers and it can make things difficult for an individual who is labeled as a rat. It would definitely be beneficial to have proof as unfounded accusations would not go over well. But it is still necessary to say something because any officer who makes ethically questionable decisions is a danger to his or her fellow officers as well as the public. It also sends the message that unethical behavior will not be tolerated.
