Culture competence Guidelines and Rubric:
Institute of Medicine (2002) released a report, Unequal Treatment: Confronting Racial and Ethnic Disparities in Healthcare, which described the healthcare setting, patients, and the healthcare provider all contributing to healthcare disparities and affecting patient care. Healthcare disparities are defined as racial or ethnic differences between the patient and the health care provider which may affect the quality of healthcare delivery.
Culture competence allows the healthcare provider to consider the cultural needs of the patient. It is important that all healthcare providers are knowledgeable about culture competence and use it while assessing and treating patients. The decrease in healthcare diversity will improve the quality of medical care and improve patient outcomes (Chesnay & Anderson, 2016).
