Reflective Paper: Individual Assignment
(40 Points)
Purpose
The purpose of this assignment is to investigate how change affects healthcare, patient care and nursing practice. The changes brought about healthcare legislation and predictions from the Future of Nursing report, at a national and global level, will be will be described and supported by a variety of sources. The student will provide insight into the impact of change on his/her practice, present recommendations for practice, and reflect on personal nurse leadership. This scholarly paper consists of three distinct sections:
Driving Forces of Change and Nurse Leadership
Change has been constant in healthcare for decades, but has accelerated in the past 10 to 15 years. Change in the healthcare system is driven by a number of strong forces that promise to continue into the foreseeable future. Some of driving forces of change include a) increasing cost, b) constantly changing technology, c) an aging population, d) increasing diversity of population and the workforce, and e) changing disease patterns and treatment.
· There have been many changes and proposed changes to healthcare legislation over the past 10 years. Identify how each of the above five categories (cost, technology, aging, diversity and disease) are impacted by healthcare legislation, and describe the impact of these five forces on nursing and nurse leaders. Use the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA) of 2010 as an example. Perform an online search to find information related to this law, or you may choose to utilize sources from other courses in the nursing program. If using the internet, choose an unbiased site that provides a summary of the law, or proposed challenges to the law (e.g., Federal or State government, professional healthcare sites, healthcare foundations). The following sources are not acceptable: social media [e.g., Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, blogs], proprietary or commercial sites (e.g. insurance companies), and politically-oriented/sponsored sites. Sites that address PPACA legislation solely as “Obamacare” may not be acceptable sources. You must have knowledge and an understanding of this law in order to fully develop this section of your paper.
· You must utilize additional resources to support your discussion (see Scholarly Paper Composition and APA Requirements below.) Examples of acceptable sources include scholarly professional journals, business journals, professional nursing organizations, healthcare foundations and governmental agencies. Be certain to cite sources appropriately. If using direct quotes, do not forget to include page numbers or paragraph numbers (if applicable), or indent text, per APA.
· Identify the one (1) category (only one from the five driving forces listed above) that has the greatest challenge to your workplace in ensuring optimal patient outcomes, and develop in your paper the reason or rationale why. You can personalize this section, based on what you see as a challenge in the area/unit where you work. It is appropriate to use “I” or “my” for this section of the paper. You must discuss/give examples of why the chosen category is a challenge where you work—it is not appropriate to only say, for example, “The aging population is a challenge where I work.” Your discussion should show evidence of this challenge occurring in your workplace. Students who have not had clinical work experience should consult with the instructor.
Future of Nursing and Nurse Leadership
· Review the Institute of Medicine’s (IOM) Future of Nursing report. The original report is quite lengthy. You want to find a site that provides a summary of the report (e.g., professional healthcare sites, healthcare foundations, government sites), or utilize resources from other courses in the nursing program. The following sources are not acceptable: social media [e.g., Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, blogs], proprietary or commercial sites. You must have knowledge and an understanding of this report in order to fully develop this section of your paper.
· Given the predictions about the future of nursing, the future of healthcare, and the general future, what types of nurse leaders will the profession need to shape a preferred future? Are these same qualities needed today? Why or why not? How will globalization affect these predictions (international perspective)? Propose at least two (2) possible recommendations. Include the Institute of Medicine’s [Future of Nursing report] position regarding baccalaureate nurses’ contribution to the future of nursing, and the role and responsibilities of advanced practice nurses in meeting patient needs.
Transformation of Self and Practice
The Benedictine Hallmark of Conversatio speaks to being formed and transformed. Since this is a reflective paper, you will want to reflect in summary:
· How has this NRHL 370 course shaped your current and future perceptions of you as a leader within nursing?
· How has the RN to BSN program transformed your nursing practice? Provide one to two specific examples of how your practice has changed, based on the new knowledge you have gained this past year.
· How have you grown as an individual? Recall your first class sessions in NRHL 315 Perspectives of Professional Nursing Practice. Are you the same person today? How are you different?
It is appropriate to use “I” for this section of the paper.
Scholarly Paper Composition and APA Requirements
· No abstract is required
· A minimum of five (5) references is required, which includes at least three (3) scholarly nursing journals/textbooks. The Grossman and Valiga (2017) textbook may serve as one of the nursing references. The textbook used in NRHL 350 may serve as one of the non-nursing references. The paper must be in APA format. Headings (per APA levels of headings) are required.
· Paper should be seven (7) to 10 pages in length (not including title and reference pages), double-spaced, Times New Roman, 12 point font. It must be written and saved in Word format. Use care in copying/pasting from other sources and inserting into your paper. This often interferes with formatting, and alters the consistent look of your paper.
· References must be in APA format only. All sources listed in your literature review must be cited within the text of body of the paper. It should be very clear to the reader where your information was found (immediately after your extracted point). The use of page/paragraph numbers or indented text (>40 words) should only be used for content that is a direct quote from the author(s). Please refer to www.apastyle.com for more information. Also, journal references may appear in formats other than APA. Use care in copying/pasting from other sources and inserting into your reference list. Clarity of thought (including page length) and expression of ideas for this scholarly paper are included in the grading rubric. It is strongly recommended that you submit a draft of your paper to Smarthinking for additional feedback.
