Readings:
“Free Speech on the Campus,” by Nat Hentoff
“The Price of Free Speech: Campus Hate Speech Codes,” by Gerald Uelmen
Essay Prompt:
In this 4-5 page paper you will identify a specific area of controversy regarding
free speech and write a paper that asserts and supports your position on the issue. Successful papers will 1) clearly explain the controversy and any necessary background information, 2) state the author’s position on the issue, 3) successfully counter argue relevant opposing views, and 4) smoothly incorporate reference to two or more of the readings assigned.
Considering the positions presented by Hentoff and Uelmen, do you think restrictions on free speech have a place on modern college campuses? Why or why not?
You may come to the conclusion that some form of censorship (you should specify the kinds of punishment and what the punishments would be given for) should be instituted to prevent the abuses of hate speech, or, conversely you may wish to argue that we will have to accept abuses of free speech in order to protect free speech.
Since both readings present both sides of the argument, with each showing a slight bias for one side, you are to bring in 1 outside source to support whichever position you take. You may NOT remain neutral, you must take either the side that free speech must be censored or must not.
*Note: Although you may use the word “I” when stating your stance, you must use 3rd person when discussing the readings.
Successful papers will:
o Use 1 outside source to support the author’s argument,
o Introduce the issue and establish its relevance for discussion,
o Establish a clear thesis that defines the writer’s particular focus and declares the
writer’s position,
o Provide background information on the readings by establishing their main claims and primary support,
o Develop the writer’s argument with specific and accurate reference to the source
material (including direct quotes), as well as outside sources,
o Conclude effectively using the writer’s own words,
o Demonstrate comprehensive editing for clarity and standard written English.
o Have correct intext citation and a Works Cited page in MLA format.
