1. Brown, H. D. 2010. Assessment concepts and Issues, Language assessment: Principles & classroom practices. NY: Longman, pp. 1-24.
Question:Chapter I in Brown discusses the definitions and unique features of assessment. It is not an easily definable term. How would you define assessment? Evaluation? What did you find most relevant on the chapter on the ‘testing, assessing and teaching’? Why? What did you find most interesting or enlightening in the assigned reading? Why is the distinction between ‘informal/ formal’ assessments an important one? What is the difference between ‘formative/ summative’ assessments? Any examples? Why are the ‘new views’ on intelligence relevant to an examination of this topic?
2. Lapp. D. et al. 2001. An integrated approach to the teaching and assessment of language arts, in Literacy assessment of second language learners, ed. by S. R. Hurley & J. Villamil Tinajero. Boston: Allyn & Bacon, pp. 1-26.
Share with the class two (2) things you thought were particularly pertinent to your understanding of ESL assessments mentioned in the chapter by Lapp. Consider Table 1.2 on page 9. Select one standard and briefly discuss its importance. Lastly, why should assessment be linked to instruction? How can this be accomplished?

Identify what you think are some major points made by the author in this chapter (1-3?). Briefly discuss any apparent connection to what you have been reading in the main texts. How is the chapter content relevant to you own practice when teaching/assessing ELLs? How would you address/ apply what you have read in your own present/ future praxis? At the end of each chapter you will find a section titled “Questions for reflection and response.” Choose any two (2) questions from this section to address as part of your entry for this module.

Could you identify any connections to what the authors in the other texts are saying? Any inferences or conclusions that you can draw based on your reading of this chapter?
