By looking at the United States in comparison with other developed countries, as well as less developed countries, it seems clear that in the United States we enjoy many benefits in terms of healthcare but we also face some challenges.
1. One health challenge in the United States is, that as individuals, we tend to consume too many calories and also have a protein and fat-rich diet. I would like you to keep a four-day food log that spans a Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and Monday. You should keep a record of every thing you eat and drink during these four days. Keep a record of not only what you eat, but also how much of the item you eat. You should then estimate how many calories are eating, as well as the calories from protein and fat. Please provide the food log as part of the activity.
After the four-day log is complete, discuss how your food consumption compares with an ‘ideal’ diet in terms of calories, protein, and fat. Do you think you have a diet that is typical of a person in the MDCs?
One calculator to estimate the calories you need is at http://www.exrx.net/Calculators/CalRequire.html
2. Use the following website to briefly discuss nutrition and related health consequences in two poor countries http://www.unicef.org/statistics/index_countrystats.html .
3. Briefly discuss the comparison between your diet and that in your selected two countries. Use other sources from the internet to find out more about diet in your selected countries. (Remember to avoid plagiarism, or appearance of plagiarism. Cite the sources you use and make sure it is clear if you do use quotes).
