This class has investigated a number of different ways that aspects of our identity (and those around us) are impacted directly and indirectly by our various group memberships. One of the first assignments you completed for this class asked you to think about the various groups to which you belong and discuss them in a presentation. Now that we are at the end of the course, you are being asked, in a way, to return to the ideas discussed in that assignment: how has what you learned in this class reaffirmed or altered your understanding of the groups to which you belong? You will respond to this prompt in a 6-7 page personal essay (as in, non-academic).
This assignment asks you to demonstrate your understanding and processing of all that we have covered this class. In your essay, you will again discuss the groups to which you belong as well as ideas from the various sources/texts we have covered in class in order to demonstrate several things. First, how has your understanding of the groups to which you belong changed? Have you developed a deeper appreciation for these groups? More observant about the role these groups play in your life? How so? What specific texts have impacted your perceptions of these groups? What about how you interact with other groups to which you do not belong?
Dig deeper in order to think about what role the various groups have played in your life. In addition, you will examine these group memberships—think of this as taking stock in them—and determine, going forward, which of these group memberships you will maintain (and why) and which you will reconsider (and why). By reconsider, I mean perhaps change how you interact with it/them. For example, if there is something being communicated about the group with which you disagree or would like to see change, how would you address this? How will you change the way you interact with groups to which you don’t belong?
In general, you are demonstrating your ability to think critically about our course’s content and apply it to your own life in a constructive way. I am grading the level of detail provided, how well you demonstrate critical thinking, and how well you apply course concepts. You don’t need to walk through all of the sources/texts, but you should work with at least five in a way that demonstrates your understanding of what each source discusses. You don’t need to quote from the sources, but you would at least need to mention them by author and title as well as paraphrase their ideas (or at least main idea).
