Here’s my essay.
Being on the stage of the child development is really important, which their brain is developing how to read and speak. But living in a country that mostly young generation hardly afford to go to school for their education nor their parents cannot provide books for them to read because of the financial issues. I was one of those kids who did not have any story books until I entered my kindergarten.
As I vividly remember, kindergarten struggled for me when I was 4 because I started early than usual kids who go at the age of 5. I was antisocial and writes whatever I want on my paper instead of my name so the teacher would scold me. However, due to family problems I had to stop my school and went back again when I was 6. Through kindergarten to 2nd grade, my grandmother would help me with alphabet reading and some basic lessons for my age. My grandparents and my father did not finish their education because they had to work at their early ages; therefore, I was not motivated to read and write at a young age. It came to a point that they had to hire someone to tutor me, who happened to be my teacher in kindergarten. It was fine at first; however, it became a struggle to my tutor because I was not willing to study. After few months my tutor gave up on me being stubborn, and through primary school, to high school, I had to do everything myself.
I started to read different stories in my high school years. They are some genres that peek my interest and they are some that do not. The romance was one of them, probably because of our cultural view. We were exposed to a lot of drama shows that trigger us to like them and to believe that it can happen to real life. It all started when a friend mine who sits beside me in math class was reading a book published by Precious Hearts Romances, which are Tagalog novels. She was attached, to the point that even in our break she still reads until she finishes the book. I even caught her couple of times smiling or giggling by herself while reading the book. I thought it was weird to put all your time just to finish what you were reading. So I asked her if the book was good and she gave me unending answers, reasons for me to read it. Therefore, I ended up borrowing the book to see if she was proven right. At first, I find it slow, but it was picking up as I read more chapters. The story was tragic but has a life lesson. I started liking their books and had some collections for a while; however, I gave them away because I had no place to put them. I try to make stories before but it seems that I was lacking in imagination and cannot put into words; therefore, I gave up with writing. But it did not stop me to read books then I started to read English novels to improve my learning.
The year of 2014, my first time stepping on the land of United States. Few months after I started my school to get into college. Due to my lack of English, I went through different classes, which involve writing and reading. I had read all kinds of books every week to improve my communication skills, as well as my writing. After a year of my transition, I was finally got accepted to be in college. I took Sociology and Speech class for my first semester, which mostly requires writings and speaking to a crowd. I had trouble voicing out my words with big crowds before because I was not confident of myself; however, after writing an essay every week for each class, I started to feel comfortable.
To these days even I don’t read very often because of work schedules and other responsibilities, my skills of writing and reading still developing. I have set my goals to be better than I am today.
