I believe that my faith influenced my choice in pursuing a human service profession because God encourages us to have a servant heart. I truly have a passion to helping people by building relationships in order to connect them to resources. I want to be able to fulfill my purpose and be in the mission field by helping others reach their full potential. The new deal and social security act of 1935 proved to assist the nation in times of hardship. The initial president’s hesitant response to the country’s crisis demonstrated the need for human services providers to come together and help. I believe that this historical event where Roosevelt created 15 new programs that took the country out of depression made great changes that till this day we are benefitting from and are still in place.
According to the reading, this historical event showed Americans that poverty could impact on anybody. The formation of these policies helped so many Americans get back on their feet. This is why I believe that this is one of the most important historical events. Not only did you see the president take action to help his nation but also it brought forth human service providers to fight for human rights. (Martin)
In 2008 when the economy hit a recession, policy makers studied Roosevelt’s New Deal from the 1930’s in order to learn from it. This comes to show that the impact of these reforms and policies are still obvious and active till this day. They are using these policies as a platform of how to address present and future economic struggles. “Recent events demonstrate that understanding the New Deal and Great Depression is as important as ever. The intellectual stakes are high, and the interpretation of history may influence, directly or indirectly, the course of policy in a moment of crisis. It is hardly surprising that the diverse set of policies driven by Roosevelt’s mandate to “above all, try something” sometimes led to counterproductive and unintended results.“ (Collins, 2013)

The bombing of World Trade Center took place on September 11, 2001, which caused the tremendous destruction of both life properties. It was a clear summer day when Al Qaeda extremists hijacked three passenger planes and conducted suicidal attacks against the Pentagon in Washington and the World Trade Center in New York where all passengers on board died as well as about 3.000 other individuals on ground (
Sather-Wagstaff, 2011). The fourth airplane crashed into the Pennsylvania pitch and killed the who were on board because of the attempt made by the passengers to seize control from the terrorist. The first three planes that crushed in New York and Washington were Flight 11, which was a Boeing model 767 that had 92 passengers aboard, Flight 165 with 65 passengers, and Flight 77 with 64 passengers. Flight 11 left Logan International Airport in Boston for Los Angeles at around 7:59 am.
Captor Mohammed Atta made the initial accidental broadcast from flight 11 to the FAA control room on the ground, which alerted the NORAD’s air defense sector but it was too late to secure Flight 11 and the passengers aboard. At about quarter to 9 in the morning, Flight 11 crashes to WTC completely destroying floors 93-to 99 ( Sather-Wagstaff,2011). All the passengers on board and hundreds of he people who were inside the WTC died. Andrew Card who was the Chief of Staff in the White House alerted President G.W Bush who was in Florida about the incident four minutes later.
Several efforts were made by FAA in conjunction with FDNY, NYPD, and NEADS to salvage the situation but the terrorist accomplished their mission. Eventually, at least 3,300 people died with millions of dollars of properties destroyed ( Sather-Wagstaff,2011). The President made a national address at about 8: 30 in the evening condemning the act and requesting Americans to unite in the fight against terrorism.

One of the most important historical events in the history of the human services profession was the election of Franklin D. Roosevelt as President in 1932 and the implementation of the New Deal. With the backing of the Federal government, he transformed the practice of social work and human services from a private urban collective to public agencies nationwide. He coordinated and organized the efforts of social workers across the country, providing financial backing of the government to fund thousands of workers in positions of social work (Marx, 2011). Within days of his inauguration, Roosevelt quickly implemented many programs to help with the economic crisis of 1929. He created the Civil Works Administration (CWA), providing millions of unemployed with jobs, and the Federal Emergency Relief Act (FERA), which not only provided assistance to the unemployed in the form of nourishment and other aid (Martin, 2014). , but, as Marx stated, “required every local relief administrator to hire at least one experience social worker on their staff.” (as cited in Trattner, 1999, p. 285;296-297). Because of this requirement, the moral principles and procedures of social work stretched all over America, doubling the number of employed social workers positions, from 30,000 to 60,000 during the 1930’s (Marx, 2011). With the creation of the Social Security Act, Roosevelt created offices all over the country to help aid dependent mothers and children, the disabled and the blind, as well as assistance for the elderly and compensation for the unemployed (Martin, 2014). He regulated the financial market with the Security and Exchange Committee (SEC) and provided insurance for checking accounts with the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) (Martin, 2014). The SEC, FDIC, Social Security unemployment compensation are some of the programs that still exist today. As a result of this government expansion, Roosevelt supported and encouraged not only the general public, but gave social workers the respect they deserved with the funding to make real changes in society as they were endowed with actual power to do so.
