Overview
One of the most difficult aspects of academic writing is selecting and narrowing down a topic. For your project, you will need to choose a social institution to analyze. These can include things like: Education (please write education for my
topic)
For this part of the project, you will simply need to start thinking about narrowing down your topic and starting your research. This is so I can have an idea of your general topic, your sub-topic, and the resources you intend to use for your PowerPoint.
Directions
This assignment will help you to get started on your project. For this assignment you will simply need to submit 2-3 paragraphs using the following questions as a guide. This is done on your own, not in groups yet.
- Which general social institution are you interested and why?
- Can you think of specific aspects of this institution that are interesting for you? What makes these interesting for you? For example, if you choose ‘Family’ perhaps you are interested in single family households. You can even narrow this down further and think about researching single family households in LA.
- Find 3 resources about your institution, summarize in a sentence or two the main ideas of each resource. Add a formal citation at the end of your assignment for each of your resources. *Use this forum as well to find partners for the project, based on common interests. Aim for a group of 3-5 people, but remember that you must submit this assignment with at least 1 partner in order to get credit. You will ultimately, as a group, decide on one specific institution for the project, and combine your sources in the bibliography slide.
