A healthy community means that people living in that community have common grounds or values. Some move into a community because the top ranked schools, other choose a community because they like the age population (55 and up communities). For some selecting a community depends on the distance to work or what kind of public transportation is available for them. There are people who select a community base on the culture or language. In a healthy community the people residing there will work together to keep it safe. Generally, in a healthy community the populations will have health insurance and easy access to health care.
The Community nurse needs to start out with assessing the Community she will provide care for. The assessment should include what kind of ethnic groups live there and is there easy availability for health care. In an unhealthy community some of the population do not display good health behaviors. Education and income play an immense role in a community.
The community nurse might start out with implementing an improved school health program. Educational and community-based programs and strategies are designed to reach people outside of traditional health care settings (Healthy People 2020). Education on diabetes could be effective during a free health fair in the community.
Community/public health nurses seek to empower individuals, families, groups, community organizations, and other health and human service professionals to participate in creating healthful communities (Maurer & Smith, 2013). The Community nurse will assist the community with the tools necessary to improve, but it is up to the population of that community to implement it.

My idea of a healthy community is one where there is peace, shelter, education, food, income, stable ecosystem, sustainable resources, social justice, equity, and health promotion. A community where it’s people share a common goal, to ensure low crime rates, promote good emotional and physical health, but also are actively participants in society. Safety is a big key to a healthy community, as well as is affordable preventative health access. It’s important for the community to have clean water, pollution-free air, affordable quality health care, and schools.
People should have resources available to them in their community, which offer information about health promotion. Shelter that is suitable for certain climate, and that is sustainable for extreme weathers is important to a healthy community. Having enough food with suitable nutritional value to guarantee health of adults and proper development for children, is also key.
Education for children and adults that is free, and adequate to prepare them for a productive and comfortable life style in their society and is available and accessible to everybody makes it possible to have a great community. A community that looks at health promotion positively, where you can find help to improve on and sustain your well-being also contributes to this.
